The US is opening a horse slaughter house and the meat is being exported and since the Canadian government is allowing more foods from the US to come into Canada, I be weary buying meat from a grocery store. Many groups, within the US say the horses aren't safe to eat because they are given substance that isn't allow in food products. On the Dr. Oz Show, they found even the label on the meat package said beef, when they tested it, its was horse. Has anyone had horse meat? http://ca.news.yahoo.com/u-approves-horse-slaughterhouse-sees-two-more-plants-002957259.html

"Horse meat cannot be sold as food in the United States, but it can be exported."

Evidently it can be sold as food in Canada - and is.

Smoked horse meat is normally a popular item at Ben’s Meat and Deli in west Edmonton, but more customers at the Dutch specialty shop are interested in trying it lately.

The widespread, false labelling of horse meat sold as beef across Europe — in products that included frozen meatballs, burgers, lasagna, pizza topping and meat pies — temporarily hurt overseas exports from Alberta’s horse meat industry. The scandal temporarily killed demand for Alberta horse meat, shipped mainly to Japan, France and Switzerland. Now that European authorities have determined the source of mislabelled horse meat was likely a Polish supplier, the horse meat industry here could see a peculiar perk.

Canada already has slaughter houses for horses.

I believe horse meat is considered a delicacy amongst the French, is it not?

(hopefully this is not construed as racist.)

I think horses have done too much work for humans for us to eat them. Like dogs, our relationship is too close.

Moose is good.... Horse is probably similar. As long as the animal is treated humanely and it is safe as food, then I don't really see a problem.

Why can't horse meat be sold in the USA? Sounds like big gov't socialism to me....

Because they are not intended as food animals, horses are given medications banned from other livestock, [...] questioning if the meat would be safe.

We don't sell cat or dog meat, either, or guinea pig meat for that matter. Same in Canada. It's because they are raised as pets, not livestock.

Even if a farm raises them as livestock they would be banned from selling horses for meat. Big gov't telling Americans what they can eat.

As I already pointed out, your government does the same; however, there are no laws against eating horse meat, just against selling it.

But in Canada, horse meat can be sold. So Canada doesn't do the same.

Can cat or dog meat be sold? What about guinea pig?

Canada most definitely does do the same. :)

We are talking about horse... The OP is about horse... Horse is whats on the menu in Canada. So, no... We are not the same.

You said: "Big gov't telling Americans what they can eat."

Your government is no different, as your government restricts what can be sold for food in your country, too.

Seems like a silly argument to me. Most countries have restrictions on what can be sold as food, why pick on just one of them.

In a way I agree with BubberMily, the great majority of horses raised in North America are not for the purpose of livestock but for pleasure, competition, working animals or pets. Sending them to an abattoir seems a cruel reward for the service they have provided.

As it was already said most horses have medication in them, NOT suitable for humans, so the US exports. Now, if its exported to Canada , does that mean Canadians are eating meat that can, down the road make them very sick?? Also, its very hard to tell the difference between beef and horse meat.

Id eat horse meat. I've heard that its quite good.

So would I.

I've also heard that European soccer players use it because of the protein content,or something along those lines.

I have eaten Bison,but I didn't like it.

Dog meat can be consumed and sold in canada legally.

In many cases in the USA one can buy dog meat and one can also consume dog meat for personal consumption.

Guinea pig can be sold and eaten in the US and Canada.

So there is a difference.

So dog meat can be sold legally if it's been inspected, but evidently cat meat can't, so your government is telling you what what can and can't be sold as food - especially since it has to "be inspected." There is no difference, as your country tells you what can and can't be sold as meat same as in the U.S. Just as I said.

Wrong

Just as I said

Wrongly ...except for cat.

I can buy dog meat legally , you cant. So there is a difference

But yes, we have laws and the US has laws.....if that is your whole point.

I replied, no thats not correct. Its not the same i Canada

For some reason, you seem hung up on the minor point that Canadians have restrictions on food products too. Kind of silly to suggest anything like that....ergo...it appears to be your whole point.

I guess we dcan agree on this....we both have laws.

Yes. Which was the point I was making. In response to this comment: "Big gov't telling Americans what they can eat." Big gov't tells Canadians what they can eat, too.

Woot.
