The_Squid Posted June 1, 2013 Report Posted June 1, 2013 Yay! This was a real load off my mind. The pope says atheists can go to heaven. http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2330135/Pope-Francis-says-atheists-good-redeemed-Jesus.html Oh wait.... The pope's people say I am still going to hell.... Dammit! http://www.belfasttelegraph.co.uk/news/world-news/popes-proclamation-that-atheists-will-go-to-heaven-has-led-to-a-rebuke-from-officials-who-declared-they-will-go-to-hell-29303740.html But the mood of goodwill was short-lived. Just a day later, in a thinly veiled rebuke of the new Pope, who took over from Pope Benedict XVI in March, Vatican spokesman Father Thomas Rosica made it abundantly clear what was really meant. In an explanatory note on the meaning of salvation, he stated that merely being good is not enough to avoid going to hell. Who do I believe? Doesn't the pope speak for God? Thanks pope Frank! Quote
Guest Posted June 1, 2013 Report Posted June 1, 2013 You can imagine all these Cardinals wandering around the Vatican, going, "What is the point?!?! I mean, what is the bloody point of getting half the planet on our side by telling them one thing when he's just going to screw it all up in his first month on the job by telling them all it's not true? I'm going down the pub!" Quote
kimmy Posted June 1, 2013 Report Posted June 1, 2013 Picture the Catholic Church as the Republican Party. Think of the Pope as Mitt Romney. He's the pitch-man. He's out there spreading his message and trying to win people over. But you can't take everything Mitt says as literal. You have to wait for Eric Fehrnstrom to go on TV the next day and give you the fine print. In this case, Rev. Rosica is giving you the fine print. Atheists can go to heaven, provided that they accept that Jesus Christ is the son of God and he died for their sins. In other words, nothing new here. I can't imagine why atheists would remotely care whether the Pope thinks they're going to heaven anyway. I'm personally wondering if Peter Pan thinks I'll be allowed in to Never Never Land. -k Quote (╯°□°)╯︵ ┻━┻ Friendly forum facilitator! ┬──┬◡ノ(° -°ノ)

Doesn't the pope speak for God? Thanks pope Frank! ya, Bill Maher played that up quite well last night... he said he was booking his ticket to heaven... until it got walk-backed! I think with your 'Pope Frank' reference you also might have watched it... Maher kept thanking 'Pope Frank'! Quote
The_Squid Posted June 1, 2013 Author Report Posted June 1, 2013 Yeah, I saw the Bill Maher bit and that's where I got the idea for the topic. Was funny. My question though.... Does the pope speak for God, or not? The Vatican is confusing. Quote

kimmy Posted June 2, 2013 Report Posted June 2, 2013 There's a special process by which the Pope's communications become infallible. His comments on salvation redemption for atheists don't count as infallible because he didn't go through the proper paperwork to make them infallible. -k Quote (╯°□°)╯︵ ┻━┻ Friendly forum facilitator! ┬──┬◡ノ(° -°ノ)

I would imagine, though, for example, that some devout Catholics who worry about their kids' eternal souls because they are atheists might care. Quote
Guest Peeves Posted June 9, 2013 Report Posted June 9, 2013 Who is the pope to speak for atheists or secular citizens when one can go to paradise by simply becoming a martyr? As an atheist I don't put any stock in any religious dictate, but I sure worry about those that do. Quote

As an atheist I don't put any stock in any religious dictate, but I sure worry about those that do. The Pope is speaking for Catholics. That should be quite obvious. Everyone has their beliefs - he speaks for Catholic beliefs. That you worry about those who have religious beliefs is your right - just as I'm sure some with religious beliefs worry about those who don't. In other words, just the opposite side of the same coin, as I've so often said. Quote
cybercoma Posted June 10, 2013 Report Posted June 10, 2013 I haven't commented on this anywhere because frankly I don't really care what the Pope thinks about after-life myths. Quote

kimmy Posted December 25, 2013 Report Posted December 25, 2013 WWWTT, that is not what heaven is about! Jesus won't be kicking banker ass in heaven, because there certainly won't be any bankers in heaven. Rather, this cartoon is a reminder of Matthew 21:12 where Jesus arrives at the temples and finds money-changers doing business there. He flipped their tables and chased them away and told them "This is a house of prayer, not a den of robbers!" If I had to guess what the message of this drawing is, I think it would be to point argue that Christianity is supposed to be about social justice and charity, not commerce or servicing the wants of the wealthy. Here the signs on the table indicate these are American banks and investment houses, and so perhaps the message is that American Christians should not support those who would favor big banks at the expense of the poor. WWWTT Posted December 25, 2013 Report Posted December 25, 2013 I just thought that it was a funny picture that sort of reflects the new popes anti capitalistic direction. WWWTT Posted December 25, 2013 Report Posted December 25, 2013 Are you sure Shady? i I believe this picture speaks to the left. kimmy Posted December 25, 2013 Report Posted December 25, 2013 I don't know if Pope Francis is anti-capitalist, but he has certainly delivered some blistering blasts to outrageous executive bonuses and profit without conscience. I don't see anything to indicate that WWWTT's Jesus cartoon is referring specifically to the Pope, though. It references a story about Jesus, not about the Pope. It should be important to all Christians, not just Catholics. -k Quote (╯°□°)╯︵ ┻━┻ Friendly forum facilitator! ┬──┬◡ノ(° -°ノ)
