Bonam Posted November 7, 2012 Report Posted November 7, 2012 -I would guess that there is more freedom to smoke marijuana in Canada than in the US Except in Washington and Colorado. Quote

That's simply reality, and continues to be to a somewhat lesser degree. Yes...it is "freer and better" for those and millions more like them than in Canada. 320,000,000 > 35,000,000, and it's not just the weather! Quote Economics trumps Virtue.
Guest American Woman Posted November 7, 2012 Report Posted November 7, 2012 Except in Washington and Colorado. And a lot of other places where it's been decriminalized.. Not to mention one can get "medicinal" marijuana for just about any reason. Quote
bush_cheney2004 Posted November 7, 2012 Report Posted November 7, 2012 Except in Washington and Colorado. Agreed....and some provinces have to send patients to the USA for their "freer and better" abortions. Quote Economics trumps Virtue.
cybercoma Posted November 7, 2012 Report Posted November 7, 2012 Also, historically, Americans fled to Canada due to slavery and the Draft. Unfortunately, in the case of slaves fleeing to Canada, freedom is slavery. In most cases, they weren't a lot better off at all. It's a complicated past that we seem to wash over with a nationalist mythos that isn't entirely accurate. Quote
carepov Posted November 7, 2012 Report Posted November 7, 2012 Still, it remains a puzzle as to why more Canadians emigrate to the United States than do Americans to Canada, and the U.S. has TEN TIMES the population. Freer....better....but not able to keep the best and the brightest at home. Explain this please..... Canadians have a greater freedom of mobility than Americans? Quote
bush_cheney2004 Posted November 7, 2012 Report Posted November 7, 2012 Canadians have a greater freedom of mobility than Americans? No, there are Americans all over the world, far more than Canadians. Quote Economics trumps Virtue.

Attempt #2: a) Canadians immigrate to the US then, as dual citizens, move back to Canada and their return is not included in the numbers of US emigrants to Canada. Smallc Posted November 7, 2012 Report Posted November 7, 2012 Just for clarification, marijuana is still illegal in the entirety of the USA. Quote

Smallc Posted November 7, 2012 Report Posted November 7, 2012 (edited) No, it is completely illegal, same as in Canada. Edit: It should be legal in both places. Edited November 7, 2012 by Smallc Quote

Smallc Posted November 7, 2012 Report Posted November 7, 2012 No, that in fact is not true in either case. Quote

Discuss below for extra credit..... Perhaps for the same reasons that people move from Montana to California or from Washington to Texas. No, on average, the climate in the USA is much better than in Canada. How about you try to address the points I made earlier about how Canada is freer than the USA? (note: a I attribute a great deal of Canadian freedom to the protection of the USA.) Quote
Michael Hardner Posted November 7, 2012 Report Posted November 7, 2012 No, it is completely illegal, same as in Canada. Edit: It should be legal in both places. I think you and AW are saying the same things, with different words. It's legal in some states, but illegal according to federal law. In Canada, it's in some similar in-between state. Smallc Posted November 7, 2012 Report Posted November 7, 2012 It's legal in some states, but illegal according to federal law. In Canada, it's in some similar in-between state. Again, marijuana (not medical marijuana, which is legal in Canada) for recreational use is 100% illegal. It doesn't matter how many US states legalize it. Until the federal law changes in either country, it is illegal. Quote
Guest American Woman Posted November 7, 2012 Report Posted November 7, 2012 No, on average, the climate in the USA is much better than in Canada. Do you have statistics as to where Canadians move in the U.S. that would back up your 'better weather' claim? Because these Canadians have made NYC their home, and I doubt it was for the weather: Since 2000, the number of Canadians living in New York City has more than doubled to over 21,000, myself included. In Manhattan alone, we make up the eighth-largest population of foreign-born residents. And there are between 70,000 and 99,000 unauthorized Canadians nationwide, according to the Urban Institute, a research firm that estimates figures based on population surveys. Although no one tracks the number living illegally in New York, the city continues to be a draw for my northern brethren. http://observer.com/...dians-among-us/ Quote

It doesn't matter how many US states legalize it. Until the federal law changes in either country, it is illegal. And this is why you have the Governor of Colorado coming out this morning and saying, don't use marijuana, it's illegal. Quote
bush_cheney2004 Posted November 7, 2012 Report Posted November 7, 2012 (edited) Perhaps for the same reasons that people move from Montana to California or from Washington to Texas. But why not PEI to Alberta? No, on average, the climate in the USA is much better than in Canada. How can this be if Canada is better? How about you try to address the points I made earlier about how Canada is freer than the USA? If you insist....Canada is not "freer than the USA" because of individual liberties first enumerated in the US Constitution long before Canada even existed as a sovereign state. Examples: Property rights, expression (speech), and firearms ownership are "freer" in the USA. (note: a I attribute a great deal of Canadian freedom to the protection of the USA.) And of course, it would be silly for me to say the same for the USA and Canada. Edited November 7, 2012 by bush_cheney2004 Quote Economics trumps Virtue.

wyly Posted November 7, 2012 Report Posted November 7, 2012 Perhaps for the same reasons that people move from Montana to California or from Washington to Texas. No, on average, the climate in the USA is much better than in Canada. "better" weather is entirely subjective, mrs wyly doesn't like heat, my daughters prefer wintesr because they suffer less from allergies, and I've met a number of australians who moved here for our winters(skiing)...(note: a I attribute a great deal of Canadian freedom to the protection of the USA.) I attribute it to the same thing that kept Britain safe for centuries, being surrounded by water, and oceans being an even better barrier than the channel...you may recall our only foreign threat came by land from the very country that you credit with protecting us....it was water and Britain that protected us more than any other reason...through our entire existence as a colony and country no overseas country has ever been seriously capable of threatening us because of our bordering oceans, we're just too damn big and isolated... cybercoma Posted November 7, 2012 Report Posted November 7, 2012 Just for clarification, marijuana is still illegal in the entirety of the USA. How does this work exactly? Colorado and Washington State are just not going to enforce federal law, but the DEA still has to? Quote
