No Lutheran would ever speak of success, but for a few brief centuries, Lutherans have made a wonderful life for many.

I fear that it won't last.

What you do when you arrive in the marketplace is a different question than what you studied. There are lots of careers that train you, and ask for a non-specific degree to apply.

ya I know, I ask because one of my daughters is finishing her 2nd degree which is in history, she's anticipating doing research work in medicine...I was just curious as to what cyber was looking at...

I think the point is likely an attack on socialism, welfare, and taxes.

In many of these European countries it's mandatory to pay a "church tax", especially the Lutheran. These churches are doing alright because they get PAID, regular.

yes, without the tax subsides many many churches would be closing their doors permanently...I think you'll see these tax subsidies disappear as countries become predominately atheist...in Sweden the "church" tax has become optional and swedes are opting out...

so, what kind of job prospects do have with a history degree?...

Before I graduated even, I had been paid to do some online archiving for a museum and a company in the private sector also paid me to compile a short text and presentation on the company's history.

As far as what one's job prospects are with just a BA that depends on how a person sells their skills. Any job that involves research and writing certainly, most jobs with museums and historical sites around the country, and jobs at archives. Aside from the obvious provincial and federal archives, a lot of private sector companies have their own archives and various government offices have their own archives.

I'm not the best person to ask though because I'm not pursuing a career in history.

good info thanks...she wasn't pursuing a career in history she leaning toward her other degree in archeology, history was just a personal interest...but now it appears history will likely result in a career in medicine...and here I was worried her only job prospect was high school history teacher(which is okay too)... good for you teaching is a cool job if the kids don't drive you crazy...decent pay, summers off, nice...

history is much shit upon subject it's seriously undervalued and often an optional which explains a lot of the idiocy you see in national and international politics...and much of the idiocy you see in this forum...

you might be overstating lutheranism it may go much further back than that, pre-lutheran or even pre-christian?...

work ethic of northern europe is ethnically biased IMO, work ethic is strong everywhere in the world... third world citizens work long hours just survive day to day...my asian dad-in-law worked 12-14hr days 6-7 days a week starting when he left his home alone at 14 and he did that until he retired at 50, I don't know any europeans that did that...

IMO, Working long hours is a necessity in third world countries, since as you said - it's about survival. They don't have the same kind of governments of Europe.

It is?? How so?
A Lutheran church is remarkable because of its simplicity.
The Scandinavians are among the least religious people on earth. They're Lutheran in the same sense that Quebecois are Catholics. (ie, theoretically, on paper.)

While modern Swedes/Finns/Estonians may be as non-religious, atheist as modern Quebecers, there's a difference: jewellry, earrings, tattoos, perfume, style.

Lutherans are practical, simple.

Do you really think in terms of such gross generalizations?

Must be a Quebecois trait

In general, no.

But Lutheran churches are remarkably simple, and Protestant women have in general simple jewelry. I reckon that the Lutheran instinct is to be simple and direct, not ostentatious: Ikea chair vs. Diamond ring.

I started this thread because at the time, I was in so-called East Prussia, after travelling in northern Europe, and I wondered about Protestantism, Lutherans and Catholics - Christians.

When I was growing up one of the neighbors were Lutherans, good German folks. They were simple in a good way and seemed to have it together as a family. On the other side, also German, but they were Anglicans. I found them strange, but became best friends with the one son. As Pentecostals, we were probably strange to them all. The truck driver's kid, the pub owner, the janitor's family, the pastor and the retired folks, we all accepted each other. Our culture doesn't seem to be able to accept like that anymore. As the preceding posts demonstrate.

Have you been to a third world country? The men don't work. At all. They just lounge about. Unless there's a war on, then they go about raping and pillaging. Women do work all the time of course, carrying around heavy loads from place to place.

Sure, that's not some kind of hatefully promiscuous overgeneralization, not at all!

So then cybercoma, why have a BA in history? Life is short.
