August1991 Posted July 24, 2012 Report Posted July 24, 2012 No Lutheran would ever speak of success, but for a few brief centuries, Lutherans have made a wonderful life for many. I fear that it won't last. Quote

August1991 Posted July 24, 2012 Author Report Posted July 24, 2012 Care to expand on this so that those that don't live in your head can understand what the heck you are talking about?Well for starters, the North American Left is once again talking about how Sweden and the rest of Scandinavia seem to be successful, sustainable, Big Government societies. And what strikes me about places like Finland, Estonia, Denmark is that the people are Lutheran.Secondly, a Lutheran church is a remarkable place, compared to a mosque or a Catholic Church. Quote

Michael Hardner Posted July 24, 2012 Report Posted July 24, 2012 It is?? How so? You're more likely to hear Abba at a Lutheran mass, apparently. In other news, random observations are being followed with much interest with no understanding as to why. As long as we collectively regard these as poetic, and not worth the pixels they're printed on, then we'll all be okay. Quote Looks like someone has a new patronizing catch phrase ! Michael Hardner

kimmy Posted July 25, 2012 Report Posted July 25, 2012 Well for starters, the North American Left is once again talking about how Sweden and the rest of Scandinavia seem to be successful, sustainable, Big Government societies. And what strikes me about places like Finland, Estonia, Denmark is that the people are Lutheran. The Scandinavians are among the least religious people on earth. They're Lutheran in the same sense that Quebecois are Catholics. (ie, theoretically, on paper.) Secondly, a Lutheran church is a remarkable place, compared to a mosque or a Catholic Church. Are you sure? I don't know anything about mosques, but I have seen some pretty remarkable Catholic churches. It's no secret that I don't like much about religion, but I have to give them a big thumbs-up for awesome architecture. And the Catholics do it up better than most. Although, my Scandinavian ancestors built some pretty rocking churches as well. I think these predate Lutheranism, however. They're also more blonde... and everybody knows blondes are dumb... so therefore perhaps being stupid leads to wisdom and intelligent governments... oooooh you're on extremely thin ice, you hapless mook. -k Quote (╯°□°)╯︵ ┻━┻ Friendly forum facilitator! ┬──┬◡ノ(° -°ノ)

kimmy Posted July 25, 2012 Report Posted July 25, 2012 I'm parodying the thread itself. August is, if I recall correctly, a professional mathematician of some description. Perhaps a mathematician is drawn to search for generalizations to help make sense of chaos. Scandinavians ---> blonde Scandinavians ---> Lutheran but Blonde ---> cheerful Blonde ---> dumb and Lutheran ---> honest, earnest .:. Scandinavians ---> Honest, earnest, cheerful, but dumb Scandinavians ---> Socialists .:. Socialists ---> Honest, earnest, cheerful, but dumb. It probably makes even more sense if you draw Venn diagrams. -k Quote (╯°□°)╯︵ ┻━┻ Friendly forum facilitator! ┬──┬◡ノ(° -°ノ)

wyly Posted July 25, 2012 Report Posted July 25, 2012 I need this information for school. where can i find a cite of these stats? thanks in advance. they're just what I can remember, there are a number of sites that have similar poll results they're not hard to find...but go with the source that you find reasonable...some religious sites will have vastly different results because they base their numbers on church records, but they don't take into account continuing cultural tradition where people are still going to church for traditional wedding and festive celebrations even though they're atheists... and others are counted into church numbers because their parents were member's even though they no longer follow parental beliefs... Canuckistani Posted July 25, 2012 Report Posted July 25, 2012 Protestantism in general certainly contributed a lot to the modern states we enjoy. Question authority, worth and empowerment of the individual, etc. Work ethic. The Scandinavian states may be atheist now, but I think Lutheranism laid a lot of the groundwork for their success. OTOH, Germany is predominanlty Lutheran, and that didn't always work out so well. Quote

Michael Hardner Posted July 26, 2012 Report Posted July 26, 2012 so, what kind of job prospects do have with a history degree?... What you do when you arrive in the marketplace is a different question than what you studied. There are lots of careers that train you, and ask for a non-specific degree to apply. Guest Manny Posted July 26, 2012 Report Posted July 26, 2012 I think the point is likely an attack on socialism, welfare, and taxes. In many of these European countries it's mandatory to pay a "church tax", especially the Lutheran. These churches are doing alright because they get PAID, regular. Quote
