So it appears that on Tuesday the Republicans will have Sher Valenzuela a small business person talk about how she built her company all on her own with no help from No one. She owns first state manufacturing so I typed that into google and found firststatemanufacturing.com as the first hit and it took to me the website. It seemed odd but it highlighted how the government helped first state to the tune of over 17 MILLION DOLLARS. Sounds to me like she had some help from the tax payer to build that. Weird the republicans would use her to high light how the government can't help grow small business but I guess that was their choice.

Her. Who do you give credit for the roads and bridges to get to that business?

All of us. But that was never the issue. However, giving proper credit to individuals that start up and run successful businesses was.

Yah she did a great job with the help of the government at least according to the website. Good for her, and good for the government for having the right idea that making low interest loans and investments can grow a small business. I am glad she had help building her business from the government just like Obama said. Gald we all agree.

People can get low interest loans , but it doesn't mean their business will succeed. It takes smart people working hard to ultimately make a business successful. That's what you, Obama, and the other fanboys of the forum don't understand.

The website you provided is a fraud by critics that may be making claims that are complete lies. If there is truth there is also likely context that is required. The actual website is here:

AHHHH HAAA, punked's busted!

It appears that TimG is busted not punked.

Sher Valenzuela basically embodies everything the Republican party wants from its "We Built This" narrative: She's a small business-owning Latina running for office in Delaware, according to The New Yorker's John Cassidy. The only problem is, her company has taken some $17 million in federal loans and contracts and Reddit is all over it. First off, Valenzuela's company is called First State Manufacturing, but, as Reddit user FirstStateMan figured out, Valenzuela did not register firststatemanufacturing.com --so he "built" it for her. And this may be where those loans and contracts come to haunt Valenzuela and the Republican National Convention, where she's scheduled to speak Tuesday. As the left-leaning Media Matters reported on August 23, Valenzuela and her manufacturing company received more than $2 million in federal loans and more than $15 million in federal contracts over the years--which severely undercuts the "We Built This" theme that Republican are running with for the convention.

I just went to the top Google hit. I never claimed otherwise. So are the details on the cite wrong?
No idea. Not sure I care. But the website was an obvious fake so the details should be presumed to be wrong unless confirmed by a more reliable source.

Seems like the Atlantic confirmed all the details.

Well - there is a huge difference in federal loans vs. federal contracts. There is nothing inconsistent about claiming credit for building a company that successfully competed for federal government work - after all they are just another customer. The loans do raise some eyebrows but the real question is: would the company have succeeded without them or did they simply take them because they were available on no smart business person turns down free money. If she can make the case that the loans were not required and were only taken to maximize profits then there is nothing inconsistent with her position. Edited by TimG

and this shady BS thread continues???

nice distinction you're trying to flog over someone taking U.S. government loans vs. contracts... or that, somehow, taking monies to "maximize profits" removes that money from being considered as federal government money! Yeesh!

in any case, this (continuing) Republican falsehood fails the big one: this so-called "did it completely on her own" Republican poster-woman, took a total of $17 million in government loans/contracts: $2 million in direct loans and $15 million in federal contracts... of which 66% of that $15 million was non-competitive money.

No, no. It's just that because of your lack of reading comprehension and your hatred of teachers, you fail to comprehend the sentence "people succeed by their own individual effort."

Congratulations to Mrs Valenzuela for having a successful business. She should pay her taxes so that the next person can receive the same sort of support that she received.

Meanwhile, at WeBuiltThisPalooza: A Salute To Entrepreneurs Building America!

“Earlier this year, President Obama suggested that entrepreneurs ‘didn’t built that’ referring to their business. However, we at AFP recognize that the hard work, sacrifice, and dedication that goes into creating American jobs and prosperity comes from individuals, and not government. That is why we will be honoring these two remarkable businessmen who are dedicated to the principles of economic freedom, and have done so much to advance its cause. AFP is pleased to be hosting this reception to honor their vision and work towards creating a more prosperous future for all Americans.”

David Koch and Art Pope are pleased to host a tribute to entrepreneurs David Koch and Art Pope, featuring guests of honor David Koch and Art Pope, and special guest speakers David Koch and Art Pope!

Two dudes receiving a tribute from an organization that they founded, operate, and fund. Wow. What a circlejerk.

Aside from sharing an enthusiasm for self-congratulation, these two Giants of American Entrepreneurship have something else in common: they inherited their companies from their dads.

Wondering how Shar Valenzuela's company was so successful in winning government contracts? Shar explains:

First State Manufacturing also receives preference as a minority-owned contractor, a certification that its owners proudly advertise. Eli Valenzuela’s husband grew up in Corpus Christi and is of Mexican descent. Valenzuela is Slavic in heritage. “We almost mention the certification before we say ‘hello,’” Sher Valenzuela told The News Journal in 2006.

Obama's ridiculous statement trying to distinguish between somebody's hard work when building a business is just as bad as Todd Akin's statement trying to distinguish between types of rape. At least Akin apologized.

Yes, he does contradict himself several times. I can't argue with that.

More good work from kimmy. Cherrypick a business and pretend that business applies to all businesses. Then yell Koch brothers several times. Rinse and repeat. Just like one of those unhinged far-left liberal bloggers.

You can't distinguish between one thing. That doesn't even make any sense.

Just goes to show how poor the old reading comprehension really is.
