In a odd move Premier Kathy Dunderdale laid into Peter MacKay today for broken promises he's made to Newfoundland and Labrador and how difficult he is to deal with. She says the province has had success with Ministers Joe Oliver and John Duncan and basically said that McKay seems to be the problem rather than the Harper government. It's not that common for a premier to criticize a federal minister, and it's particularly an odd move by Dunderdale who has tried to build a better relationship with the federal government.

While a Newfoundland and Labrador premier may not have a lot of influence on the national scene, the problems with MacKay continue to build. With all the screw ups from MacKay is it finally time for him to call it a day and leave politics?

Dunderdale 'extremely frustrated' dealing with MacKay

Newfoundland and Labrador Premier Kathy Dunderdale is singling out Defence Minister Peter MacKay for failing to deliver on past federal election promises to the province.

“I’m extremely frustrated with Minister Mackay,” Dunderdale told reporters at Confederation Building in St. John’s Thursday.

The premier was responding to a CBC News story about past Conservative election promises to station a battalion of troops and an unmanned aerial vehicle squadron at 5 Wing Goose Bay in Labrador.

MacKay's recent written response to questions tabled in Parliament reveal that those 2006 pledges are no longer part of the military’s plans. Neither is a territorial defence unit planned for St. John’s.

Dunderdale said the province has had some measure of success dealing with other federal ministers.

“But we seem to be having a significant challenge around having Minister MacKay respond to the commitments made to the people of the province,” the premier told reporters.

As for past Conservative promises on 5 Wing, Dunderdale acknowledged that “if they’re not dead, they’re on a sick bed.”

Not only won’t they get a battalion, from RUMINT, they’ll be lucky to keep CFB Goose Bay……

I'll be surprised if they get rid of it altogether, since it's an important CF-18 forward deployment.

Does anyone think that maybe McKay covered himself as a minister when he joined the Alliance with the PCs? He's a lawyer so could it be he has some power over Harper when he made the deal?

The only reason he's in cabinet is because Harper owes his whole government to him. Harper supposedly cannot stand MacKay but he wouldn't be Prime Minister without him so he's paying him back.

I think MacKay is skating on thin ice. Leaving politics is way too harsh, but I think he's getting near the point of needing to switch ministerial positions with a fellow cabinet member.

God love our federal system. It is the best protection against dictatorship, and the best protection of individual rights.

I doubt much of that.

I simply admire our federal system.

We can complain about much, but I prefer a federal State.

I lost faith in his judgement a while ago, MG, when he hooked up with Belinda Stronach.

Look how well that worked out!

You can't really connect the way a man deals with women to the way he deals with other things.

Do you left leaning wing-nuts not understand what happened at the end of 2008? It was a little tiny thing, it may have gone un-noticed but an FYI, we had a global recession.. What McKay planned prior (as in 2006) for the maritimes is null and void.. We can just spend spend spend.. Plans change. This is not Greece where we simply print money. Why do we need a base out there in the firt place? Now, If i was a left-leaning wing-nut i would pounce on his idea/agreement to install the base in the first place? Who's gonna invade the maritimes?!?!?!

Who's gonna invade the maritimes?!?!?!

Have you not been following the thread on why we desperately need 40 or 50 or who cares how many billions of dollars worth of Starfighters?

A government without public oversight is like a nuclear plant without lead shielding.

Did it go up again? From the 17billion plus maintenance?

I guess you're right, Smallc! If I had thought about it, I would have realized that I myself am proof of that statement! :P

The commitment has been made several times since 2006 for your information. As well Goose Bay is considered a very strategic location for the military, specifically with regards to artic sovereignty.

Why would they be stationed anywhere?

He's right. A rapid response force, out of the way, at a base with no airlift assets nearby? Why?
