He said that to the party, if he won then he could have been assured the party would back him at convention. That could be true it could not be true but Topp would have no power as leader to make this a policy decision. However in the NDP the leader does not make policy only the party members do. Which is why I gave you an example. This again is an instance where you know nothing about the NDP but speak like you know something. No wonder you hate them so much you know absolutely nothing about them.

I asked you a question, no need to be mean.

Newfoundlanders and Labradorians have the second highest income of any province, behind only Alberta.

And the highest debt per capita of any province right? Highest unemployment?

However I like Newfoundland and firmly believe with good management they will get out of those two holes.

The Quebec government is also making $1 billion a year off the Churchill Falls hydro development in Labrador. If that money had been coming in to Newfoundland and Labrador we would have no debt whatsoever and would have been off equalization much sooner then 3 years ago. If Quebec would leave Canada the contract signed with them would have to be re-written and it's quite possible northern Quebec, and other parts, would remain in Canada which could make it easier for us to develop hydro power and send it to Ontario.

If it wasn't for the Hibernia oil situation, you'd still be a bunch poverty stricken seasonal fisherman...

Which your province has been for most of its history...

Newfoundland and Labrador has been a net charity case...

The beatings will continue until morale improves!!!

But without oil Alberta would be booming, right?

Ah yes... those pesky federalist separatists. It's like being a little bit pregnant.

Why would seperatists in Quebec need the Bloq when they can have federalist party do the Assymetrical Federalism/Distinct Society Constitutional Veto power for them?

You've been a net charity case...You know this...

I'm glad you stuck it to Quebec with the Churchill Hydro thing and you can actually get off of being this country's provincial welfare state because of oil...

But history is history...You can't deny it!

Such vitriol for peeble in the Rock.

BTW regarding the ad. I can see the CPC attack ads already.

Thomas Mulclair. He hates the rest of Canada so much, his first ad was in French. Most of us don't even speak French. He only cares about Quebec and you know it.

Paid for the Federal Conservative Party of Canada.

If history is history you also can't deny that it's thanks to our province's resources that Quebec is not collecting more money from equalization. Or that Canada has formed stronger relationships with countries at the expense of our cod stocks, which helped lead to them being destroyed.

I don't hate Quebec, I just want them to separate.
And now that Newfoundland has oil (discovered with the help/money of the rest of Canada), I suppose that you want Newfoundland (& Labrador) to become independent too.

I'm no fan of the NDP but I like the ad. It's a condom against the potential Tory virus/attack ads.

IMHO, Thomas Mulcair understands that politics is not just substance but also theatre. Stephen Harper doesn't understand this well.

Which is why you hate the NDP because they put Separatism to bed.

I'm wondering if you actually believe that.

How insanely dillusional.

I don't see how Canada would be better off without Quebec. For one thing, there would be a huge hole in the middle, and for another, we'd lose a large percentage of our economy. The costs of the change would be beyond belief for both parties in terms of government costs, economic costs, cultural costs, and the cost of our standing in the world.

What costs exactly.

At best I understand there is a price to pay regarding maintaining Canada's "standing in the world", if at least in organization like the G8, with a membership perhaps a bit more difficult to maintain being a smaller country... but government costs? Long term economical costs? Cultural costs?

And there wouldn't be a "huge hole in the middle", there would still be Québec.

Rex Murphy's scathing commentary this weekend.

With this new opposition under a new leader, the Liberals will have to fight for their political lives, and the Conservatives will have to give up their useless games and conduct politics as adults for a change.

Rex Murphy's scathing commentary this weekend.

Rex sure as heck isn't always "on"; but when he is, as here, his polemics are simply unmatched. An awesome little article.

“There is a limit to how much we can constantly say no to the political masters in Washington. All we had was Afghanistan to wave. On every other file we were offside. Eventually we came onside on Haiti, so we got another arrow in our quiver."

--Bill Graham, Former Canadian Foreign Minister, 2007

Its tough living on the Rock.. Ironic seeing where this thread has taken itself.

No one should be dissing our last Province... and if it took 60 years to get on the good side of the economic fence thats fantastic. And quite frankly, standing up for your natural resources and protecting them and using them for local gains is smart.

Kudos again to Williams... he single handedly took on Harper and won... and punished the CpC FOR An election cycle.

Wow these are bad...

He's gonna take on stephen harper! And win!

And when are they gonna stop using jack as some kind of martyr?

This is probably the script for the next ad:

"Our lord and saviour Jack Layton, has chosen me, Thomas Mulcair, to be his disciple and to pass on the undeniable words of god to all Canadians".

They're milking that man's death for all it's worth.

Mulcair:

he does not blink even once. he's trying to steal your soul!

At least it's positive and not slanderous, which is already a step up for the attack ads we'd been getting. But I'd like to see ads rise one step higher to actually include substance. Honestly, he said nothing in that ad of any real substance. Heck, harper could have said more or less teh same and made it a Conservative ad.

I am not quite clear on this.

I thought that NFLD privated their Hydro Development to BRINco who then set up the contract with Quebec because it was cheaper and easier to sell power to Quebec then to the states....Perhaps Joey Smallwood should have nationalized the hydro industry development and you would have control today.

Regardless any contracts involving hydro would have successor rights, and penalties..

IE if Quebec cancelled any deals there would be penalties .. if NFLD cancelled any deals there would be penalties...

It seems like a complicated mess... Perhaps you can explain it all to me.
