What about it? There is an internal H of C process to capture infractions and hold MPs to account.

According to his wife, he charged the maximum (without receipts) of $83 a day for food and then ate free food at meetings. I don't think there's anything you can do after the fact to prove an infraction in a case like that. The food has already been eaten. In any case, the CPC-bots have been well trained to turn a blind eye to such things, haven't they?

Nonetheless, it's good that they're doing all they can to make sure this information is more widely known.

I don't know of too many people who would approve of public servants ditching their wives and impregnating the babysitter. Just CPC-bots when it involves a "family values" CPC minister.

Newt Gingrich is a similar sick f***.

I know I am guilty of sarcasm but this is not one of those occasions. One of the reasons I am not a Republican is the sickening level of hypocrisy. If someone such as Toews or Gingrich advocates "family values" I'd better see them loyally and devotedly around the family fireplace with their wife and kids, not screwing some babysitter.

That just proves we need more internet privacy, not less.
On the contrary, I think that we require less privacy.

Otherwise, with complete privacy, the anonymous mob would rule us. And that's not democracy. That's mob rule.

If I were Vic Toews, I would argue that this is the Anti-Somali Act because it prevents Canada descending into Libertarian Hell. Then again, maybe Toews/Harper understand their potential voter pool better.

Internet technology has made changes in how we deal with one another, and it has shown that many social science theories are ad hoc. Gravity exists; theories of human interaction are subject to endless change.

---

All things considered, I think that the federal government should not register every gun in Canada, but it should have a registry of every ISP address.

We once had telephone books and even unregistered telephone numbers but the police had access to all the numbers. This change in ISP information is no different.

IMHO, if you connect to the Internet, the State should know.

If you live somewhere and own a particular type of gun, the State need not know.

Simply put.

If you connect to the Internet, the State should know.

But they never had the right to listen in on our phone calls without warrant.

That would be fine if they could be trusted not to abuse that privilege, but they cannot be trusted. This gives the police and state far too much power.

For example, if people seek to organize their efforts to expose government corruption through the internet , or reveal police abuses of power, or the activities of some opposition political groups to organize rallies, organize legal action against the government for some illegal act of corruption, if such things are organized on the internet, they would be monitored. Since reform threatens the established order, this would be seen as a threat. And even if not acted upon through direct intervention, it gives them an unfair advantage by listening in on what opposition groups are doing.

Sounds like the way Nixon ran the U.S.

Listen to your conversation, or use what you said as evidence - that required a warrant.

But the State once had the right to know your phone number - because it was in a phonebook. Should the State know your ISP address? Why not?

----

Underneath all, the Internet technology is revolutionary and raises fundamental questions: What should the State know? What is mob rule?

uhhh... Operation White North!
Mob rule? Do you want to live in a free-web libertarian society like Somalia?

IMHO, a civilized State requires at least laws of ownership, and laws of trade. IOW, or OWS, we o/w have mob rule.

Sadly, such acronyms likely determine the future of Western civilisation.

for all those MLW thread detectives playing off today's show of "Baird Bravado": Stop This Amateur IP Tracing BS Now

Unless someone is willing to share a detailed Government of Canada network diagram, we have absolutely no clue where a computer behind any IP address physically resides. It literally can be anywhere in the world where telecommunication networks extend to. Just because the IP "Who is" record says "House Of Commons", it does not restrict or require that those IP addresses only be used within the "House of Commons". It is entirely possible that the computer that connected to that twitter account was also in another city in this vast country of ours. How can someone do work for the Parliament of Canada and be in say, Canmore Alberta? It is called "tele-commuting."

Next is the even worse tripe also constantly being repeated: "The Citizen found the IP address was also used to update Wikipedia articles often giving them what appears to be a pro-NDP bias, actions that have attracted the attention of numerous Internet observers in recent months."

Any private entity that manages a large private network will share public IP addresses with hundreds, or even thousands of computers. This is called Network Address Translation, or NAT for short. If private entities didn't use NAT (specifically "Hide Mode Nat"), the world would have run out of IPv4 addresses about a decade ago. I can guarantee you that at any given moment that IP address the Ottawa Citizen recorded is being used right now by several hundred devices. Simultaneously.

The only thing we know about this IP address is the following:

1) It is owned by the Government of Canada

2) It can be used by anyone in the employ of, contracted to do services for, or is a guest of the Government of Canada

That's it. We don't know anything else. Anything more than that is rampant speculation.

Rae called him an employee of the Liberal research department. An employee is a staffer.

“I learned yesterday that an investigation into the online activities of Parliamentary staff conducted by the Office of the Speaker of the House of Commons has found a link between the @Vikileaks30 social media account and an employee of the Liberal Research Bureau,” Mr. Rae said.

“On behalf of the Liberal Caucus, I wish to apologize to Minister Toews and Speaker Scheer for the improper use of a parliamentary account and for sharing personal information intended to embarrass Minister Toews.”

Once again, you show you have no clue!

The reason for Vic's claim is that the tweets give him no opportunity to defend himself. That is the basis for all libel and slander laws. If I publish something bad about you in the newspaper I could be wrong but the damage to you is done and you'd have to live with it. With tweets it's exactly the same!

Now I happen to agree with the tweet claims myself! I don't have a very high opinion of the man. However, that is irrelevant. The fact remains that his reputation has been tarnished with no chance for him to tell his side of the story.

I realize that you will not agree with this. I'm sure that since you hate Tories and Vic in particular then you wouldn't waste a second thinking about what was fair or legal.
