"A major American food company is promising to avoid using fuel from Alberta's oilsands."

"We are committed to directing our transportation providers to avoid, where possible, fuels from tarsands refineries," says a letter from Chiquita vice-president Manuel Rodriguez to Aaron Sanger of the environmental group ForestEthics.

"We will identify all fuel providers for these (Chiquita-)owned or dedicated trucking fleets and work with ForestEthics to identify any connection between Chiquita's fuel providers and tarsands refineries toward the goal of eliminating fuel from these providers that is connected with tarsands refineries."

Of course, they will have no problem at all continuing to buy "blood oil" from Saudi Arabia, a country which recently executed some poor woman for witchcraft.

http://articles.chicagotribune.com/2011-12-13/news/chi-saudi-woman-beheaded_1_beheads-saudi-arabia-executions

"A woman was beheaded in Saudi Arabia for practicing witchcraft and sorcery, the kingdom's Interior Ministry said, prompting Amnesty International to call for a halt in executions there."

The executives running Chiquita are boneheads! I've added their name to my list of food source countries which I won't buy. No more Chiquita bananas for me!

I urge all my fellow Canadians to do the same.

Bill, you shouldn't be so sensitive. There is a lot of opposition to that project so you may as well get used to bad press.

Of course I am aware that there's a lot of opposition, Michael. That's freedom!

Still, it's also freedom to do unto others as they have done unto you. I don't respect what Chiquita is doing. It appears to be a cheap shot to get some marketing brownie points. Then again, that was also a free choice.

I am under no illusions that when I refuse to buy Chiquita bananas or raisins from Iran it will make any difference to the world. I also don't expect to have millions of fellow Canadians follow my example. Unlike some posters on this board, I don't assume my values are everyone's values!

However,it makes a lot of difference to me! It bolsters my self respect!

I just want to go to sleep at night without feeling like a hypocrite.

interesting that you take a corporate initiative as a personal affront? Oh wait... that's right... many on the right are now predisposed to accepting corporations as people!

What's really comical is listening to these people getting all weepy and ethical over blood oil. I guess it's never too late in the day for abject hypocrisy.

Lets look at China. We know of the Human Rights issue there and you would think countries would be avoid trading with this country but no, ALL countries have corporations setting up shop there and we in Canada are trading with them and their products have toxins in them. So what's that say our Canada. The all mighty dollars speaks first unless you care about the environment and the generations to come, hopeful having clean air to breath! It's one thing for the Tories to throw their weight around the House of Commons but you better be careful with the rest of the world and what Kent did at the environment conference may come back and bite the Tories were the sun don't shine on all fronts when dealing with other countries except the US. So for those don't like what Chiquits doing, go buy Dole.

I couldn't care less if they are people or a collective entity, Waldo. Someone somewhere in that corporation made a marketing decision with which I disagree. They have that right. That's freedom!

I also have the right to refuse to give any of my money to them, by purchasing their products. I'm not expecting to be omniscient and practice a perfect boycott. i don't expect their stock to crash because I bought someone else's bananas to put on my Cheerios. I don't expect to start a movement across the country that will bring them to their knees!

I simply don't feel right about giving them my money, so I won't!

It's a simple as that. Others can make their own decisions.

I applaud your joining the ranks of Time's 2011 Person of the Year... the Protestor. Just so you have your targets properly aligned... you'll need to include the following companies in your personal boycott in support of the tarsands/BigOil:

Chiquata Brands, FedEx, Whole Foods, LUSH Cosmetics, The Gap, Timberland, Levi Strauss, Quiksilver, Walgreens, Trader Joe's, Avon, American Eagle Outfitters, Liz Claiborne

:P Waldo, most of those were already on my list! Especially Levi Strauss! For an old hippy to lose his blue jeans supplier is a terrible thing!

So you aren't shocking me with anything new! I don't buy much anyway anymore. I put my money into guitar maps for rock and roll! :P

I also don't think I'll worry about Lush Cosmetics...

Anyhow, as I've said, I'm not all anal about it! I can't know everything and if I find I've inadvertently bought something from a country on my chit list it's not the end of the world. It's all but impossible to totally avoid Chinese stuff in this day and age. I do love to try to find used stuff first, especially tools. I just bought a house and I found lots of old yard tools made of real metal. Likely at least 50 years old and still going strong! Much better value than that Chinese plastic WalMart crap that breaks after 2 seasons...

Got any used nails?

I've been driving Chinese steel into Canadian wood these last few weeks and the nails lose the battle at least 15% of the time it seems.

You're quite right, eyeball! I have friends who are roofers and they do have had frustrating problems with cheaper Chinese shingling nails - misshapen heads or no heads at all!

1. Yes, money keeps the economy going .. if you don't like it you can move to a country with no resources so you don't feel like a hypocrite for reaping the benefits while "ruining the environment" see that is what you green people are, hypocrites, you will benefit from these companies propping up the country so we don't live in squalor and terrible third world conditions while being opposed to it

Leave Canada, all of you Green hypocrites, we don't want you here, we don't need you here

It's one thing for the Tories to throw their weight around the House of Commons but you better be careful with the rest of the world and what Kent did at the environment conference may come back and bite the Tories were the sun don't shine on all fronts when dealing with other countries except the US.

2.What did Kent do other than the right thing? All Kyoto was is welfare to poor nations.. so boohoo African nations hate us for not giving their dictatorships and crooked elitist governments money... if you honestly think Kyoto was about combating global warming and lowering emissions I have an Idiots guide to the real world for you to borrow

Its sad that so many view Kyoto as some kind of world savior. But its true intentions are well crafted and designed. It's therefore obvious that there are those who want the West brought very low.

Hang on. If Chiquita can decide to boycott a given organization because it dissapproves of it, then certainly other organizations and individuals have every right to do the same to Chiquita.

I approve of this boycott! :)

On both sides. Seems to me the banana industry has rarely stinted from exploiting the environment of third world countries -- or the people living there -- to maximize profits, regardless of the damage caused.

Thanks for the list. I will avoid giving business to any of them.

Not that I'm likely to use Fedex again anyway after seeing how they deliver computer equipment...

Stay away from Chinese drywall. It's been making people sick.

I try to stay away from anything Chinese -- to the extent that's possible.

No problem. I avoid all those as it is. It's really not that hard.
