The_Squid Posted July 28, 2011 Report Posted July 28, 2011 Liquor is certainly taxed at an exorbitant rate in BC as well. That $16 bottle of delicious Spanish wine Garnacha de Fuego is $8 in WA state. I would reccomend: http://www.bcliquorstores.com/product/255745 It's also $16 in Alberta... which confuses me cuz Albertans are always bitching about the price of booze in B.C. Try the wine. It's big, bold and beautiful!! Quote

It's big, bold and beautiful!! I guess Liquor is one thing. I bet all provinces have stores that sell only liquor. But Beer is something different altogether. $28 minimum for a case is pretty horrendous. Especially when they raised the price from $24(sans deposit) just cuz. I'd love to hear a breakdown of the mark up on an average case of Molson Canadian. Another problem is the fact that the LCBO often charges less for imported wines than local wines. WTF is up with that? Quote
M.Dancer Posted July 28, 2011 Report Posted July 28, 2011 Because of their huge markups. And because it's the only place in Ontario you can actually buy Liquor. If there was only one place in Ontario that you could purchase say. . . ANYTHING! I'm sure it'd be profitable too. Monopoly FTW! That must explain why the price differences coast to coast are very small. Even in provinces that have private retail operations... I looked it up There is at $4 difference between certain liquors you can get in Alberta and here. Not huge I suppose. Beer on the other hand. Which is more to the issue of this thread is a bit more marked up. Quote

Then there is more tax..then their is the lowest price allowable... ..then of course, Brewers retail is a private company Quote RIGHT of SOME, LEFT of OTHERS If it is a choice between them and us, I choose us
Moonlight Graham Posted July 28, 2011 Report Posted July 28, 2011 I was recently on a trip driving through Quebec, stopped at a gas station, went into the little store at the gas station and saw a fridge stocking beer next to the fridges stocking soft-drinks. I had to do a double-take, it was so weird to see! I don't even drink so i don't pay attention to where booze is sold, but i was like "say whaa???...that doesn't look right!" lol. I like the fact that gov't liquor stores pay their workers a decent wage and 99% of my booze is bought from the gov't stores. I am OK with the way liquor is sold in BC (there are private stores, gov't stores and, in small towns, "liquor agents" that have gov't liquor store prices). I just wish the gov't wouldn't look at it as such a cash-cow... I don't mind paying more.... but I don't like being screwed.... Edited July 28, 2011 by The_Squid Quote

The_Squid Posted July 28, 2011 Report Posted July 28, 2011 (edited) Molson Canadian is $21.49 for a case (12 bottles). How much in Ontario? edit: I wouldn't drink that horse-piss if they paid me.... Edited July 28, 2011 by The_Squid Quote

OK it sucks in BC too. Not a big surprise you guys have a Carbon Tax. Right now they have a Summer promotion at the Beer Store. $40 for 30 bottles. Quote

Is that why no one in North America has even considered doing it? Just saying BC seems like a tax happy place. 2 for 1 cases of beer would be a fun weekend. Quote

Remiel Posted July 28, 2011 Report Posted July 28, 2011 The city slickers should stop complaining about not being able to buy alcohol at the corner store. I mean, in the country, the corner store is often a liquor agent these days it seems, but the corner store is just as far away at the LCBO is for those in town. Quote
Shwa Posted July 28, 2011 Report Posted July 28, 2011 Yeah 60% in any election will probably get you a huge majority. So we have gone from "vast" to "huge." Based on an election. In a thread discussing a straw poll about selling beer and wine in the corners stores in Ontario. So you justify any tax by saying it funds hospitals? Pretty much. How do you justify taxes? I doubt Quebec is in the shits because you can buy beer anywhere. I'm pretty sure it has something to do with their stagnant growth and bloated public service. Don't they have $7 daycare there? But imagine all that revenue they could jump on. Quebeckers are not suddenly going to stop drinking beer or wine. Their bloated public service is likely due to all the beer they consume. In the Sun today a columnist said that Licbo pays $5 to buy a bottle of liqour they sell for $25. I bet the mob doesn't even have a Vig that high. So don't drink and you won't be ripped off. Or find a bootlegger somewhere, they way the real men used to do it back in the day. Quote

dre Posted July 29, 2011 Report Posted July 29, 2011 So if they allowed competition, by letting other outlets sell alcohol. You think they'd mark-up the price similarly? I doubt it. Based on my experience with cold beer and whine stores out here they will mark it up as much or more. At the very least it will be real close. Quote I question things because I am human.
