The thing is though if it was true Jack would be charged he wasn't. Maybe the cop was just that bad of a cop or maybe Layton was getting a Massage.

The truth is he was there during a police raid on a suspected bawdy house after Layton himself railed against such places. It doesn't look very good on Jack is all I have maintained. I don't see how even the most partisan supporter can say that it does indeed look very good for Jack that this happened.

"Found lying naked"? "A suspected bawdy house"? Come on, this is a freaking joke. If the public buys this 'scandal' at all, they don't deserve good government.

LOL. When I read that it sounds absolutely ridiculous and sensationalized as hell but it will sell newspapers that's for sure...lol again.

Meh, the moment has passed for me. My wife didn't think it was a big deal either. I was running through the house proclaiming this big news about Layton. She said I was carrying on like he had died or something...lol. Maybe it's overblown a bit.

I mentioned it to my wife too, who's not a staunch supporter of any party (I tend to bounce ideas off her to see if I'm being an unreasonable socialist), and her reaction was, "Yeah? So?" I ask, "doesn't it look bad though?" And she says, "Not if he didn't do anything wrong and it was a registered clinic."

What she did say, however, was that she felt this was the worst kind of gutter politics and that she's surprised the Conservatives would stoop to that level. You and I both know the Conservatives didn't publish the story, but it's going to look very, very bad for them if my anecdotal sample of 1 is any indication of reasonable minds.

The truth is he was in a Ontario LICENSED Massage Parlor when the police Busted in and found he did nothing wrong. Wait tell me more about this Massage parlor did it ever lose its License?

Again seems like A LOT of people on Twitter that I know aren't NDPers are seeing this hatchet job for what it is.

Because we live in Canada and not the US. Libel law is very strict here and to report allegations with out making it perfectly clear there was not wrong doing is just as bad as lying

True statements ARE NOT EXCULDED from Canadian defamation laws. This cop might get lucky because Jack is a nice guy but I would sue the pants off him and the sun.

Bullshit. Learn what the hell you're talking about. I WAS sued for slander and libel by my builder and guess what....it was unsuccessful BECAUSE my statements were true and provable. Now this may change from province to province, but in Alberta the absolute defence is the truth.

It does not matter if statements are true. If the statement implies something that is false or unprovable such as "A sexual act for money" when that is unprovable it is Libel. Sorry.

Will some more people please tell me more about the law.

Where a communication is expressing a fact, it can still be found defamatory through innuendo suggested by the juxtaposition of the text or picture next to other pictures and words.

Brown, The Law of Defamation in Canada, 2nd ed. (Scarborough, Ont.: Carswell, 1994) vol. 1 at 201

Here we have the case of innuendo. You have to be very careful how you write a story like this. I think this one was written with innuendo. The question is if the innuendo came from the paper or the cop.

No, little one, you are incorrect. If they print or state something that is unprovable, it is libel/slander. If they imply it, no go. If people infer it, no go.

NO if they imply it, it is Libel in Canada. Again we live under a British system of Libel not an American one.

I cited a law text. You cited nothing.

If the dips end up in power, the rest of his pension will be going to the NDP anyway so who cares?

This is serious news. Jack Layton was found lying naked in a bed in a suspected bawdy house with a suspected Asian hooker who left the room with a wet tissue in her hand which was later discarded in a garbage can the policeman said.

Jack Layton was the same man who railed vigorously against such places because they objectified women. Then we was found lying naked in one in Chinatown during a police raid.

If that doesn't sound news worthy..I mean come on, that is gold right there.

Again watch what you imply. Libel case in NS showed that you ISP will not protect your identity in a case of online Libel.
