Liberals losing steam

Recommended Posts

You know when the Liberals move to bringing out the old PMs risking bringing up Adscam they are in trouble but when they go back to the "Secret Tory Agenda" argument they are done. Now they are hoping to hold their voters and hold their soft support by scaring those who might think of voting NDP into the old "but think Harper might win". They have stopped running the 1993 campaign and are now running their losing 2006 and 2008 campaigns. They need fresh blood.

Stuck in the polls with no sign of a post-debate bounce, the Liberals are turning to former prime ministers Paul Martin and Jean Chrétien to rally the troops down the final stretch.

Mr. Martin will be joining Michael Ignatieff’s national tour Saturday, and Mr. Chrétien is scheduled to address a rally in the Greater Toronto Area in the last week before the May 2 vote.

Liberals drop gloves with attack ad on Harper’s ‘secret’ health agenda

Fear trumps hope, the Liberals have decided, with a hard-hitting new attack ad accusing Stephen Harper’s Conservatives of a secret agenda to cut health care.

I'm just waiting for the news report that says when a staffer goes to the back of the bus and has to bear the news to ignatieff that the game is over.

They've been handed all kinds of excellent ammo to work with by the Conservatives themselves.

That they'd instead decide to go with something that's completely off the radar, and reach into their own closet to dig up their own skeletons, is just baffling.

They were doing fine. The NDP burned them in the debates but they weren't losing support however they got stuck in the sand and started to panic. They should have went back to their 93 playbook they spent the first 2 weeks going after the NDP vote they got as much of that as they could they should have moved to the Conservative vote. Instead they started playing defense. Now they might lose votes as they are running in the wrong direction. It is craziness.

Does anyone else think it Ironic the same day the Liberals go live with an Ad accusing the Cons of wanting to cut Healthcare to nothing the Liberal leader is going around with the two men who cut Health care in Canada to the lowest level ever?

I'll pull an Iggy here and steal a quote from a great American President

"The Liberals are the only people in the world who can lie out of both sides of their mouth at the same time."

That ad comes perilously close to the "soldiers in the streets" ad. The ad, complete with a flatlining heart monitor, is meant to scare the bejesus out of Canadians.

Next, Chretien and Martin are brought centre stage, a move sure to torpedo Iggy's campaign against Harper for his lack of ethics. Adscam, the gift that keeps on giving.

I'm not the only one that smells fear coming from the Big Red Tent.

The air of desperation hanging over the Liberal campaign like a dark cloud likely isn't funny to Liberals, but it reached bizarre and can't-help-laughing proportions when Michael Ignatieff urged a roomful of surprised looking party supporters to "rise up, rise up" on Friday night.

You might have felt like jumping from your couch, hands reaching skyward.

"He looked like a Bolshevik televangelist," Pat Martin remarked to Yahoo!Canada News in a trademark bite, ironically and perhaps accidentally playing on Ignatieff's Russian aristocratic ancestry and his actual physical appearance, black eyebrows, grey hair, gravelly voice calling on voters to throw off their chains and stop 2011 Stephen Harper, instead of a 1917 czar or drawling plantation owners in Georgia.

With Paul Martin and Jean Chretien recruited from their retirement sideline seats, it's looking more and more like the 2006 campaign when, as Harper stirred up odours from the sponsorship scandal like a drawer full of smelly socks, Martin and the Liberals practically begged voters to switch from the NDP to keep Harper and his not-so-hidden agenda out of office.

Why is Mulrooney mum??? Or is he not as loved as you'd like to think? All that Oliphant and illegal payoffs... (and nafta)

--- yeah.. and is Joe Clark all Cozy with the party still after it was hi-jacked by the reform/alliance folk?

Perhaps the Tories have no one to campaign for their graces for a reason?

The viciouness betrayal and corruption of the CPC speaks for itself.. the liberals may be corrupt but they are corrupt to spread the love, not the hate.

They're spreading something all right, but it's the first time I've heard it called "love"

Why is Mulrooney mum???

Because the Conservatives don't have to call on fossils to save their campaign.

Ignatieff's Liberals, on the other hand, are going back in history by trotting out (un)ethical Jean Chretien and ditherer Paul Martin looking for a hail mary pass. So much for a fresh Liberal face and a re-built party.

Clearly, the Liberal campaign has turned from one of hope, to one of fear and desperation. BTW even the media is tuning in to that reality. I don't expect you to see the light anytime soon.

I expect the NDP to really go after the Liberals now. The Liberals tried to poach NDP votes by moving to the Left. That hasn't worked and now that Ignatieff and the Libs are imploding, Jack is not going to let them come up for air. He's already won back the voters he temporarily lost but now he can peck away at the carcass. Meanwhile, on the right flank of the Libs, voters will be jumping ship to the Conservatives because they won't be able to stomach the desperation of hauling out Chretien, Martin and the hidden agenda. Ignatieff has proven to be nothing but a puppet for the back room boys. Many people could see it - but it's clearly out in the open now. The party has no political or moral compass. They'll be lucky to hang onto 55 or 60 seats. Maybe Ignatieff will be the second coming of Kim Campbell.

A lot of Libs will stay home, just like last time.

Ignatieff has proven to be nothing but a puppet for the back room boys.

I was thinking just that when I saw Ignatieff repeat his "rise up" schtick in Alberta tonight. They saw merit in Ignatieff's impromptu move in Sudbury and advised him to do it again. It's not easy to maintain the spontaneity of a given moment in time. If he carries it too far in the next couple of weeks he will come out looking too preacher-esque and people will start laughing at him. You know what they say, once they start laughing at you...

Bob Fife from CTV said not to make too much of the coming of the Big Guns (Chretien and Martin)...that it's normal for them to want to support their party. He gave the campaign of Dion as an example.

Hello? They were desperate then too.

A while back he was groovin to Caribeanna. He's up there yesterday dancing the Pow-Wow move with his wife. (Hmmm....come to think of it, Harper has not brought out his wife yet (she's just there quietly in the background)...maybe a duet is in order?)

Last night Iggy playfully threw snowballs at the press. Really buttering up the press?Maybe the snowball move will do the trick for Iggy?

Just recieved two phone calls back-to-back from Saskatchewan friends wanting to know what's happening to public opinion here in Ontario... one just a very interested citizen; the other has been actively political in the past but keeping a low profile now/ regularly refuses nomination. Both fairly rural, 200 miles apart.

Both report an abrupt and substantial softening in Tory support, and wanted to know if I was seeing the same thing here. (No, I'm not.)

Interesting. Very, very interesting.
