Shwa Posted January 12, 2011 Report Posted January 12, 2011 First a little Buffaloney from a disillusioned Buffalonian Donn Esmonde: Disillusioned by northern neighbors Even as it was, I think we saw a different side of the normally placid, polite, patient good neighbors we thought we knew. Buffalo was invaded by a sea of red. The tide has receded, leaving behind some hard feelings, shattered stereotypes and an aftertaste as bad as the backwash from a warm Molson.Whatever happened to the polite, humble, rule-respecting folks we thought we knew? Where were the civic-minded citizens who dutifully wait at the street corner when the traffic light is red, even when no cars are coming? Wherever you are, we want you back. Then a rebuttal from Toronto Staronian, Cathal Kelly: Kelly: Canadian world junior fans criticized in Buffalo Oh, Buffalo. We rescued your tournament from local apathy and crushing irrelevance and this is the thanks we get?A visiting Swedish writer likened the city to something out of “28 Days Later (minus all the zombies).” One of your own players – Ducks prospect and Team U.S.A. forward Emerson Etem – called Buffalo a “ghost town” and “the worst city ever.” And you’re angry at us? Seriously? What’d we do to get you so hysterical? It is true that we showed up, injected hundreds of thousands of muscular Canadian dollars into your threadbare economy and rooted for our team. We’ll admit that. We’re sorry. That was pretty awful. There might have been a drunken incident or six. That’s possible. Since the end zone seats at a Bills home game generally resemble a Hieronymous Bosch painting, we thought you embraced that sort of high-spirited fun. That was foolish of us. Are you hurt? Show us where it hurts. Because we’d like to kick it all better. Seriously, the World Jr. Tournament was rescued by the Sea of Red, even in the USA games. Although any Canadian that cheers for the opposition against the Yanks (except when Canada is the opponent) is, in my books, a creep and should be stripped of their maple leaf emblazoned whatever. But thanks Buffalo. Maybe all those Canucks who hold Bills season's tickets should turn them in. Eh? Quote
guyser Posted January 12, 2011 Report Posted January 12, 2011 Judgin by some of the people who where, I can see their dissillusionment with us. Reported to me by Yanks , they said there were a bunch of smarmy idiots in attendance. They werent your normal ticket buying fans I can vouch for that. But all said, it is a tempest in a teapot, the restaurateurs sure were happy, the servers not so much. Quote

Why do you say that? The Americans beat Canada for the gold in last years tourney in overtime, it's also become one of sports great rivalries. I suppose should be stripped of my emblazoned whatever. Good news though, the Russians will get my vote for a loss as well next year. Quote "They muddy the water, to make it seem deep." - Friedrich Nietzsche

They are our great hockey rival and we want to play them as often as we can and we can't be doing that if other countries are beating them. Plus, they are more like us than any other country, family even. Support your extended family and cheer for the Yanks! (except when they play us, then boo and his until your heart's content.) Quote

dre Posted January 12, 2011 Report Posted January 12, 2011 I wouldnt read much into what either of those writers say. They just want to sell copy and stirring up shit and swapping insults across the border is good business. The reality is this is major sports event. Lots of young people, lots of drinking. Im sure there was some people that did not behave but its really no big deal at all. If you actually look at the stupid shit these two writers are whining about it all becomes pretty obvious. One writer is whining because Canadian fans cheered against the US team... so fuckin what? The US team chased us from the tournament last year. They are our RIVALS. This is sports dip-shit! And then the Canadian writer responds by going on about what a shitty city Buffalo is... what the fuck does that have to do with anything. People should just ignore these clowns. dre Posted January 12, 2011 Report Posted January 12, 2011 Plus, they are more like us than any other country, family even. Support your extended family and cheer for the Yanks! No thats all just silly. People on both sides of the border should cheer for whoever they feel like cheering for. Youre reading WAY to much into this. Its just not important. The_Squid Posted January 12, 2011 Report Posted January 12, 2011 Without Canadian fans pourring into Buffalo that tournament would have been a financial disaster. Canadians spent a lot of money down there supporting Buffalo businesses and the tournament! Poor tippers? OK... maybe.... I guess.... If that's the big complaint, then I don't know what to say... maybe Buffalo has shitty service.... As for cheering for any team playing the USA.... take it as a compliment. You are now our biggest hockey rival. As such, you will be subject to boos, jeers and insults about your dirty play. And if you are playing Latvia.... GO LATVIA!!! As for some hooligans and loudmouths showing up.... this was a hockey game, not the opera!! Much ado about nothing... Aside from everything else, it is tough to stay mad at the nation that gave us Molson’s and Labatt’s, eh? Anyone who drinks this swill is a cultural neanderthal... on either side of the border. I'm ashamed to admit this crap comes from Canada.... but at least it's better than Foster's or Bud. Quote

I enjoy the brands "La Fin Du Mond", "Maudite" and "Trois Pistoles". Mind you these beautiful brews are not for the faint-of-heart hypocrites who demean American beer, because they can be brave and drink a beer with 5% alcohol content. Call the above three brands "swill" if you dare. They are the reason why I hope Quebec will never separate from the rest of Canada. And just to be fair, American brand "Rolling Rock" is every bit as good as any Canadian beer. Quote
