Topaz Posted December 30, 2010 Report Posted December 30, 2010 Here we go again and the Feds are making the pack of smoke have the pictures larger and cover more off the pack. Will this help smokers to quit? Some will, but the heavy-duty smoker won't or the young 11-24 years that do or want to and so what is the answer? First of all, make it easier to quit. Instead of spending money on advrtising, put the money into tools that WILL help them quit like free excess to medication, either from a doctor or over the counter. One has to get into the minds of smokers and what better way than to expose them to someone who is dying of cancer, and right up until the end. The new picture that going on the pack is shocking, but not as schocking to what she looked like when she died. What about offering to pay student education if they don't smoke. This would make Canada with more educated people and reduced health care. Thoughts? http://www.ctv.ca/CTVNews/TopStories/20101230/new-cigarette-warning-labels-101230/ Quote
DogOnPorch Posted December 30, 2010 Report Posted December 30, 2010 Oddly, we don't put pictures of cirrhosised livers on whiskey bottles, etc....or mangled car crash victims on new cars. Quote Nothing cracks a turtle like Leon Uris.
Shady Posted December 30, 2010 Report Posted December 30, 2010 What about offering to pay student education if they don't smoke That's retarded. Why should somebody get their education paid for because they smoke? What about non-smokers? I guess we should take up smoking just to get our school paid for. Idiotic. Quote

GostHacked Posted December 30, 2010 Report Posted December 30, 2010 Won't stop people from smoking. Because obviously the last round of images on the packs were not enough. Quote

dre Posted December 30, 2010 Report Posted December 30, 2010 The images are fine, but that alone wont make a huge difference. Our approach IS working though slowly over time. Quote I question things because I am human. And call no one my father who's no closer than a stranger
The_Squid Posted December 30, 2010 Report Posted December 30, 2010 The gov't doesn't pay to put the images on the packs, the industry pays for the printing. Health Canada just tells them what to put on there. So it doesn't cost much to develop these things, although the Cons seemed to have wasted a few bucks designing the new labels. I do believe that the warnings help. Maybe not someone who already smokes, but I think it does have an effect on younger people whose parents smoke. They see these ads and what it is doing to their parent, and it is bound to have some effect. I would go even further and have the Tobacco companies only allowed to have plain brown packs with their brand name only. No nice graphics. There does need to be more done in terms of helping people quit as well. I don't agree with the tuition idea. Then someone needs to enforce it... how? A toll-free number for people trying to quit should be written on the pack. Treatments for smoking addiction should be paid for by a levy on tobacco companies. They should crack-down on the illegal smokes coming in on reserves. All they are doing is slowly killing their own people to make a quick buck. The gov't needs to stop being scared to enforce laws on reserves. Quote
capricorn Posted December 30, 2010 Report Posted December 30, 2010 Won't stop people from smoking. Because obviously the last round of images on the packs were not enough. I agree. I'm a smoker but I'm now used to the pictures of rotting gums on the package and I basically no longer see them. Contraband cigarettes don't have disgusting images on the packaging so these more disgusting images misses the target for a large segment of smokers. Capricorn, what would it take for you to quit smoking? How long have you been smoking and why did you start? If you don't mind answering. Quote

True but the reason people know today that smoking is a severe health risk is because they were educated about it, and those kinds of warnings played a part in that. It doesnt mean they will work on everyone, they simply put some of the risks front and center. Now that almost everyone knows smoking is suicidal behavior a lot less people smoke. But still some do, and some always will no matter what you do. Quote I question things because I am human. And call no one my father who's no closer than a stranger

eyeball Posted December 31, 2010 Report Posted December 31, 2010 Capricorn, what would it take for you to quit smoking? How long have you been smoking and why did you start? If you don't mind answering. Would you quit if tobacco was outlawed? Given the apparent initial success of BC's drinking and driving laws it seems that there is merit to the idea that tougher laws actually do work to change people's behaviour - moral engineering works, maybe even better than social engineering. Is that a scary thought or a comforting one? Quote I said now watch what you say they'll be calling you a radical, a liberal, oh fanatical criminal

First of all bag cigarettes and Native brands are not contraband if purchased off any native anywhere in Southern Ontario or Quebec. Second, if you really want to quit start buying full flavour bags of rollies. If you can stand the harshness then you save hundreds a month. If you can't stand them then you will decide to quit within a week. Topaz Posted December 31, 2010 Author Report Posted December 31, 2010 Just out of curiosity, what about marijuana? I would think is any doctor were asked they would say smoking anything does harm your lungs over time and does cancer in other parts of the body. You can get zyban from a doctor to help quit. The problem is don't stay on them longer than necessary. My spouse did for four months and he lost 20 lbs and kicked the habit for good. Quote
