ya, ya, scriblett... a secret meeting (unearthed by an intrepid Canadian Press reporter), secret topics & secret discussions. Apparently, Harper Conservatives would sooner allow speculation to run rampant... would sooner allow accusations of directly influencing Canadian broadcasting content/licensing... than to simply state what discussions have occurred in (all) those meetings between Harper/Teneycke & Fox's Murdoch/Alies & Quebecor's Pierre Karl Peladeau. No biggee, right scriblett... just a simple, straightforward comment from Soudas/PMO stating what actually was discussed at all those meetings - is there a problem?

OOOOOhhhh a secret meeting, should I get a tinfoil hat LOL maybe they just like to listen the conspiracy theorists ranting on

I'm more concerned about the left wing attempts to deny SunTV a licence using a foreign organization, couldn't they just write to the CRTC - heck I am, in favour of it. What are they all afraid of, and why such inflammatory, inaccurate language in the petition, at least they have proven what they (leftwingers) really want - you know - freedom of speech only for their point of view.

Ha ha, sure. Your own comments make it clear that you're all in favor of the exchange of information and ideas... except for ones you don't approve of.

That's what I take from it as well.

And frankly, while I wish them well I have no desire to pay for anything the Sun generates.

Indeed. There's already enough stuff on peoples' cable bill that they have no wish to pay for. Even "basic cable" includes a bunch of channels I've never watched and have no interest in.

I think that this supposed controversy over Sun TV is actually rooted in the way cable TV is licensed and (more to the point) sold.

To me it appears as though the way cable is structured in Canada has created the potential for a network to exist even without reaching a significant audience. It appears to me that attempting to obtain the special license Sun TV was after was an attempt to cash in on that potential: a revenue stream that's guaranteed whether they find any audience or not.

Nothing I said leads to what you're claiming. The one tenuous point you even agreed to. So, really, there isn't other ground for rebuttal when someone is clearly lying to paint someone in a poor light.

You oppose showing the documentary because you felt that it could have social effects you think are undesirable:

I can't comment on it because I haven't seen it. However, from reading the synopsis I don' think it should be. The goal it seems to me was to uncover radicalism yet, reading the response to the movie in the UK, it only created a backlash which would only serve to further the cause of the radicalism in the movie.

What more need be said?

Exactly. It is an area where the consumer has little choice but to accept the line up offered on tier one.

Perhaps in the case of secret meetings with extremely rich people who seem to share your ideology Mr. Harper should look to Mr. Mulroney and put the agenda of that meeting on the public record.

good point....regardless of ideology...meetings with media barons should be at least known to have happened.

oh my! Teneycke's source, the 'petition fraudster', associated with Ottawa area IP address... (rumours suggesting that the address belongs to one of the Blogging Suppositories remain unsubstantiated  )

Avaaz Requests Criminal Investigation into 'Stop Fox News North' Petition Fraud - Turns over fraudulent IP address to RCMP; Raises 100k online to fight Quebecor's smears and legal threats; Prominent lawyer Clayton Ruby takes case

OTTAWA, Sept. 14 /CNW/ - Today, Avaaz requested that the Ottawa Police and the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) begin a criminal investigation to determine the identity of the individual responsible for adding fraudulent signatures from an Ottawa IP address to the organization's "Stop 'Fox News North'" petition. In his letter to law enforcement on behalf of Avaaz, noted civil rights lawyer, Clayton Ruby, called for a full criminal investigation.

On September 2, 2010, Avaaz became aware that an individual operating from an Ottawa IP address was adding both fictional and actual names and email addresses to a petition to stop Prime Minister Harper from pushing biased crony media onto Canadian airwaves. The next morning, Quebecor executive and Sun TV front man Kory Teneycke published several pieces in Quebecor owned newspapers attacking Avaaz and accusing them of running a fraudulent petition - even quoting actual names added by the fraudster. Teneycke later admitted to insider knowledge of both the perpetrator and crimes committed.

Days later, Quebecor threatened to sue Avaaz for the content of its petition site.

"This is how big corporate power tries to silence people's voices, with smear campaigns and expensive lawyers," said Ricken Patel, Executive Director of Avaaz. "Canadians are deeply worried about the poisonous politics of the Sun media empire and will keep fighting their plan to force cable companies to give them access to our cable fees."

Over 80,000 Canadians have signed the petition to stop "Fox News North" and thousands more have donated over $100,000 in just four days to help Avaaz defend itself against Sun TV's attack campaign and its parent company's legal threats.

No one in their right mind would donate to such a ill informed on line petition, heck, any on line petition for that matter. Notice none of the parties have anything to do with it, they all know enough to stay away from internet junk.

So what? Clayton Ruby is free (but costs) to defend anyone, even american political action groups.

But what he won't be doing is prosecuting the claim. It is fallicious, no laws were broken. Ruby of course knows this, but the letter is merely an exercize in PR.

oh my!

Teneycke resigns from Quebecor

Kory Teneycke, a former spokesman for Prime Minister Stephen Harper who sparked controversy with his attempt to create a new television news channel, has announced he's resigning immediately from Quebecor Media.

In a statement to reporters in Ottawa on Wednesday, Teneycke said his past political involvement has made him a "central figure" in accusations of political interference and "nefarious plots with foreign media organizations."

"As the saying goes, perception can be reality," Teneycke said. He cited a petition signed by more than 80,000 people calling on the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC) to stop what they labelled "Fox News North."

"While most of these criticisms are not based in fact, it becomes increasingly clear my involvement only serves to inflame," he said.

... apparently Teneycke offered no comment on who is 'petition fraudster' source was...

Scratch Luc Lavoie as potential head of the CRTC.

Continuing development efforts related to the Sun TV News file will now be the responsibility of Mr. Luc Lavoie.

It’s the end of an era. Kory Teneycke is hanging up his battered fedora. The clatter of his trusty Remington manual falls silent. It feels like it was only a few months ago that he was putting his feet up on his desk for the first time as vice-president of business development at Quebecor Media, with the aim of launching its Sun TV News network. Back when a newsman was a newsman.

Then came the glory days. Memories. When you tell these kids nowadays about Teneycke’s epic Twitter war with Margaret Atwood, they don’t understand. That was what we called “hard news and straight talk.” We went to sleep not knowing if Russian jets might swoop down in the night, or at least come somewhere close to Canadian airspace. A kid named Baird was just a transport minister dreaming House leader dreams.

And so we in this crazy business reach for the brown paper bags secreted in the bottom drawers of our desks to raise a toast to one of our own. They don’t make ‘em like him anymore.

Beautiful article from Macleans.

whaaa! I am seriously taken aback... to have you reject my sole MLW focus in impressing you! Apparently, you prefer less information, than more. Imagine the nerve of chronically a prestigious lawyers specialty, his education/qualifications, his Order of Canada membership, his heading the Law Society of Canada, his diversity of clients, etc.

Avaaz responds to Teneycke's resignation

A victory for people-powered democracy and the fight against crony-media

Ricken Patel, Co-Founder and Executive Director of Avaaz, made this statement today in response to Kory Teneycke's resignation:

"The resignation of Prime Minister Harper's former spin doctor from the leadership of one of Canada's most powerful news organizations is a battle won in a longer fight against crony-media in Canada.

We've seen a massive people-powered movement growing to protect our democracy, with 80,000 petition signatures and $110,000 raised online in just days. We saw the big corporate response - with smear pieces in Quebecor newspapers, legal threats, and insider knowledge of criminal sabotage of our petition. But Canadians did not back down.

Teneycke's resignation was sudden and unexpected, and followed Avaaz's request to the RCMP yesterday for a criminal investigation into the sabotage of our petition. This event only reinforces the need for a full police inquiry.

This isn't over. Canadians are not just concerned about a Prime Minister's former spin doctor, they're concerned about a channel that backs the Prime Minister's political agenda, asking for special government favours to fund its launch.

American democracy has been poisoned by this kind of crony-media and its biased propaganda. What we're seeing is that Canadians aren't buying it."
