That's because she signed a U.S. based petition http://www.torontosun.com/news/canada/2010/09/01/15216861.html so did a lot of people including Tory Teneycke LOL he tweeted about it.

Whoever is behind it obviously doesn't believe in freedom of speech, at least, unless it's left wing. :)-

Sure looks like that, and why would a U.S. funded and based organization interfere in our world ?

The NP has a good piece on it, worth a read

Tyler Anderson/ National Post

Margaret Atwood will sign anything, apparently.

The well-known Canadian author and campaigner for liberal causes has reportedly appended her signature to a campaign by a New York-based organization to block Sun Media from obtaining a licence for its proposed TV channel.

Why? Well because, according to the U.S. group, Sun Media will bring “American-style hate media onto our airwaves.” As Sun reporter Brian Lilley notes, Canada isn’t actually in the United States. And, in fact, they already have Fox TV in the U.S., so how Sun Media can bring Fox-style TV to a country that already has Fox TV is a mystery.

But nevermind. This is a U.S. group trying to save Canada by convincing the CRTC to block the new channel. The group, Avaaz.org, doesn’t quite get the name of the CRTC correctly, but never mind that too. Hard to sort these things out from Manhattan. Here’s what they have to say about the nefarious Tory campaign:

Prime Minister Harper is trying to push American-style hate media onto our airwaves, and make us all pay for it. His plan is to create a “Fox News North” to mimic the kind of hate-filled propaganda with which Fox News has poisoned U.S. politics. The channel will be run by Harper’s former top aide and will be funded with money from our cable TV fees!

One man stands in the way of this nightmare — the Chairman of Canada’s Radio and Telecommunications Commission Konrad von Finckenstein. And now, Harper is trying to get him out of his job. Sign the petition below to send a wave of support to von Finckenstein and forward this campaign to everyone — we’ll publish full page ads in Canadian papers when we reach 100,000:

Ooooh, scary eh kids? Note the bold type, like they do in the tabloids for readers who aren’t bright enough to get the message all on their own. Note that it’s Stephen Harper who is behind Sun TV, not the Sun Media people as the rest of us thought. He’s trying to force it down our throats. And only one man stands in his way — Konrad von Finckenstein! Of the Radio and Telecommunications Commission, which is not really what CRTC stands for, but what the hey.

I wouldn't mind seeing some media competition given that there isn't any now. All you have to do is flip around the dial from one news channel to the next to see that their is very little difference between them. I really would like to see someone challange murdock and fox fiction.

Scriblett, thanks for the link. I listened to a rep from Avaaz and Tory Teneycke on Power and Politics discussing the online petition. The Avaaz rep seemed to be saying the bogus signatures on his online petition constitute criminal offence and spoke about a possible police investigation. I never thought using the name Bugs Bunny on an online petition was a criminal act. Anyway, Avaaz will be pursuing the matter with the authorities.

I think talking about Sun TV in that controversial manner is great. The more controversy about Sun TV, the more people will get curious and will be interested in signing up for it. I have heard it said that even bad advertising can have a desirable impact because it gets consumers talking about the product.

You are welcome, there`s another one from Kory at the Sun.

It's interesting to see that the NP and the Sun are picking up on this, so far I haven't seen anything in the Red Star :)-

I have to wonder why this 'petition' is coming from the U.S., and why anyone would want to expose themselves as being anti freedom of press/media and speech. Surely, this really does expose the left wing to accusations (and rightly so) that they do not want diverse opinions or any opinions other than their own. Surely this cannot be :)-

http://www.torontosun.com/comment/columnists/2010/09/02/15230201.html

Earlier this week, Avaaz, an American special interest group funded by U.S. billionaire George Soros, circulated a petition opposing the television licence for Sun TV News Quebecor's proposed all-news channel for English Canada.

I, like many Canadians, learned of this petition when author and "A-list" cultural nationalist Margaret Atwood announced she had signed it.

Despite the fact Sun News has not broadcast a minute of content, the petition states this is an attempt to bring "American-style hate media" to Canada, and it will broadcast "hate-filled propaganda."

Really? Last time I checked, hate speech was illegal in our country.

It also picked up on the slur from Sun TV News' competitors, calling the channel "Fox News North." Fox, and its parent company Newscorp, are not owners of this channel, nor are they involved in its development.

It is as Canadian as the maple leaf a joint venture between two Quebecor companies: TVA and Sun Media.

Based in Manhattan, Avaaz ("voice" in Persian), is so ignorant of Canada they said energy company "Suncor," not Quebecor, was behind the application. An embarrassing error, but even worse were the lies contained in the petition.

The petition, and the ignorant U.S. fringe group behind it, would make a great "Talking to Americans" segment with Rick Mercer, if they weren't so serious. These professional Yankee agitators are clearly trying to influence the television news options available to Canadians.

 ... anti freedom of press/media and speech! Perhaps you should actually read the petition - here:

while you're at it, how about commenting on Kady O's event/timeline that shows Teneycke in bed with the fraudster petitioner(s)... stay tuned - perhaps we'll eventually find a name/location behind that IP address avaaz.org is hot after. I certainly won't be surprised when it shows up as one of the "blogging Tories"... maybe even the PMO! (/snarc)

Avaaz.org vs. Sun TV vs. Unwitting Hill Journalists:

Right about the same time that the above showed up on my screen, my phone rang, and it was none other than my twitter correspondent himself (Teneycke). He confirmed that his source was, in fact, the person who had added those names to the petition, apparently to prove "what a joke" it was, what with the complete absence of any sort of verification process that would prevent someone with mischief in mind from doing -- well, pretty much exactly what his correspondent did.

As Teneycke explained it, adding Snuffy, Dwight Schroot (sic) and Boba Fett was all meant in fun - a bit of "shenanigans" to show exactly how meaningless the petition was. But as I told him, while I can appreciate that angle, I still wanted to know who had added my name to the list, since I'm not -- despite what rumours may be circulating out there -- fictional at all; I'm a real person, and a public one at that, and when my name shows up on a petition without my putting it there, I'm going to move heaven and earth to find out who is responsible.

Meanwhile, as all this was going on -- and as those who followed the original post, and subsequent updates, throughout the day, already know -- Avaaz was taking the matter very seriously indeed, posting a statement condemning the "desperate and illegal attack" on the petition, sending out personalized apologies promising to remove the maliciously added names, and vowing to track down the perpetrator, and press criminal charges, if necessary.

This afternoon, I spoke with Avaaz executive director Ricken Patel -- who had just wrapped up a pretape of a debate with Teneycke that will run on tonight's edition of Power and Politics. He told me that, although they still hadn't identified the source, they have "tracked all of the suspect names to a single IP address," and that it appears that "a good number of the journalists who were fraudulently added were from the same source that added the Snuffluphagus" -- which would, of course, be the very same correspondent who tipped off Tenecyke to the fake names in time for him to include them in his column today.

"What's really concerning for us is that this fraud occurred last night, right as he must have been writing his op-ed, so he appears to have almost instantaneous knowledge of the fraud being committed -- before we did or anyone else. How is that possible? And, given that this is potentially criminal investigation, will he disclose that relationship to his source? Was it someone who works for him?"

hey scriblett... just why did/would Harper & Tenecyke meet secretly (March 30, in New York) with the founder of Fox News, Rupert Murdoch, and the head of Fox News, Roger Ailes... a meeting that only came to light when it was unearthed recently by Canadian Press reporter Bruce Cheadle. Was that an appropriate action for a sitting Prime Minister of Canada to take... just what do you think was being discussed? Just another part of the Harper hidden agenda uncovered - ya think?

:) Another good read. I came across this item by the Globe's Linda McQuaig and found this particularly amusing.

There’s been a tendency in the Canadian media to dismiss the threat of a Fox News transplant, on the grounds Canadians wouldn’t fall for that sort of nasty, right-wing extremism.

But that comforting notion may be naive. Most citizens don’t have time to follow political stories in detail. If they hear constant sound-bites suggesting global warming is a hoax or public health care just doesn’t work, after a while the message starts to seem believable.

 Translation. Left wing sound bites on the threats of global warming and heralding our health care system unleashed on a sleepwalking public are perfectly OK because they are The Only Truth.

excellent! Since you link to an article that references the same meeting I noted, let's have your partisan take on the same questions I posed to scriblett... c'mon - don't be shy!

Margaret Atwood's reason (if anybody here actually read her reasoning, which is doubtful) isn't due to her opposition to what they aired but the process which it is going through to get the station on the air. That CRTC officials are being pressured by the government and that the government and future CPC will use it unfairly.

These are legitimate concerns.

is there a particular reason you're having difficulty with the questions... they seem quite manageable, even for you. Here, have another go - hey?

Waldo, time to take off the tinfoil hat. You're delusional.

Does everyone realize George Soros's organization is behind this petition? Anyone unfamiliar with Soros needs to do some serious research on this man and see how he tries to manipulate everything in this world. Why is Soros so interested in keeping this channel off Canadian airwaves? Why are canadians starting a petition started by Americans?

Sorry Waldo, but you seriously don't get it.

Soros has a lot of money, but to claim that he's trying to control the world and accusing of someone else of wearing a tin foil hat is hilarious.

is there a problem? It's just a basic question asking you to offer comment on why Tory Teneycke and the sitting Prime Minister of Canada, Stephen Harper, would hold a secret meeting with the Fox News founder, Rupert Murdoch and the head of Fox News, Roger Ailes. Surely you can divert some of your attention from the bus tour to answer such a basic question... surely!

maybe lil' buddy lukin can step up and answer for you - hey lukin?

ha! Soros is described as pretty hands off (other than when he got very involved in attempting to defeat Bush in 2003)... certainly his Open Society Institute has provided funding to moveon.org... certainly moveon.org has provided funding to avaaz.org... certainly avaaz.org has the petition going. Ergo... according to lukin, Soros is behind the petition.

as for lukin's contention that avaaz.org is "American":

In 3 years, Avaaz has grown to 5.5 million members from every country on earth, becoming the largest global web movement in history.

The Economist writes of Avaaz' power to "give world leaders a deafening wake-up call"; the Indian Express heralds "the biggest web campaigner across the world, rooting for crucial global issues.” and Suddeutsche Zeitung calls Avaaz "a transnational community that is more democratic, and could be more effective than the United Nations.” Run by a virtual team on 3 continents, Avaaz operates in 14 languages.

Obviously if everyone knows about this so called meeting between Harper & Tenecyke then it's not a secret, and if it is such a secret, how do we know what they discussed. Really folks, this is all supposition and hypothetical musings. Maybe what we need is a petition to do away with the CRTC.

uhhh... scriblett... the meeting wasn't between Harper & Tenecyke... it was between Harper & Tenecyke and Fox News' founder Rupert Murdoch & head Roger Ailes. And ya, it's no longer a secret since the Canadian Press reporter Bruce Cheadle investigated and unearthed that such a meeting actually occurred. Perhaps you'll step up and offer comment:

so, now you acknowledge it was a... secret meeting. I mean, c'mon... shortly after the meeting Teneycke leaves his position as Harper's director of communication... leaves it to establish "Fox News North". Can you muse, hypothetically, what was discussed at that meeting between Harper/Teneycke and Fox's founder, Rupert Murdoch, & head of Fox News, Roger Ailes?

All I know is that the media is reporting about some 'secret meeting', anything I or any one else say is speculation and hypothetical.

It's not 'Fox News North', it's Sun TV, another deliberate misnomer.
