A who's who of who's supporting who or not.

NB I took the liberty of paragraphing the following for ease of reading.

Morning shocker for Toronto MPs

Many Toronto MPs woke up in shock this week when they saw in their morning papers that mayoral candidate Rob Ford was handsomely in the lead to become Toronto’s next mayor after the October municipal election. As a city councillor, Ford was known for controversial comments about gays as well as cyclists who, he said, have only themselves to blame when they get hit because roads were made for cars. He was also once quoted as saying that “to even think about having a homeless shelter in their ward” would be an “insult” to his suburban constituents.

Liberal MP Carolyn Bennett said she is “appalled” at the idea of Ford becoming mayor. She says she got emails from people telling her that her photo was on Ford’s website with a note explaining that she was someone he likes. Some people misinterpreted that as an endorsement, so she asked for the photo to be removed. Says Bennett: “I am working hard for [former Ontario cabinet minister] George Smitherman and that’s the mayor we need.” Smitherman is currently a distant second in the mayoral race. Liberal MP Judy Sgro was also upset: “We can’t have Rob Ford run the city.”

Liberal MP Rob Oliphant notes: “I don’t think Rob [Ford] has a chance of winning.” Oliphant feels the poll did not represent ethnic communities, who are a large component of his own Toronto riding. He predicts ethnic communities will rally behind Smitherman: “They are going to say, ‘Rob Ford is not good enough for Toronto.’ He’s not the kind of Rob they need.” Liberal MP Kirsty Duncan has not declared her support for any mayoral candidate and is keeping mum on Ford for now. Ford’s ward overlaps her Toronto riding. One Conservative minister said his party would never let Ford run for them because he is too out there.

Everyone who's somebody in Toronto is in a tizzy.

School.....try it. They teach kids how to read .

And how to shoot straight...

The Central Tech lockdown yesterday happened... and apparently (after years of continuous drills) the cops and teachers weren't following the same processes. Cops were knocking on doors demanding to open them, and teachers were refusing to.

In a rare lucid moment you may have someday, dont you think perhaps these "highly focused lawyers " would pick someone with half a brain.

Oh wait, nevermind.

NO - of course not..they picked McGinty...they picked Harper...and even have Iggy on the payroll...they don't want a real brain..they want a brain that can be bought - through either ego or cash...

As for Ford ..he will do what he is told just like Miller the fake socialist did the dirty work for the "highly focused" lawyews that wield all the power..Remember the banks to not make a move unless their real bosses..give it the okay...as for Smitherman..these "highly focused" guys don't like black - gays - or truely smart and intelligent people...So there you go...we have a society where the law society have a cute little club that maintains power through one device.......DECEPTION.

It would be a stunning victory for reality if the persons in the city with the most power and influence actually stepped forward out of the shadows and ran the place...Why is it that the most powerful are the most cowardly in so far as making a pubic statement..I am getting irritated and tired of all these front men who are all about theatrics when we need real substance - He with the most substance and power should take the position of mayor...not some gay creeper - not some glutton - and not some guy that runs mafia commerials..BUT - and that is my infamous but - no one with any substance wants the job serving a city trolls...I suppose it is best to pull the strings from a far or just let it run on auto-pilot...

People with the greatest influence over resourses - human and finacial should be mayor - not wanna bees>

The issue he's addressing isn't the marathons, but the severe traffic dislocation and congestion they cause, especially during the summer. Believe it or not, but many people don't enjoy being stuck in traffic for hours on end during sweltering heat. I know, shocking.

Probably an accurate assessment. But while marathoners or cyclists may occasionally be a source of frustration for drivers, the real cause of congestion is the number of large and often single-occupant vehicles competing for limited space. Pointing fingers at marathoners or cyclists who occasionally occupy a single-digit square footage of road space as the source of gridlock problems flies in the face of simple geometry.

The amount of land available for roads is not unlimited, so the only real way to accommodate population growth is to increase density. You could stack roads on top of each other, but vehicle weight is a huge factor in the cost of a raised roadway, so arguably you might get the most bang for your buck by moving light vehicle traffic upwards and away from the cars and trucks. Carpooling would help with density but it's not an attractive target for regulation either politically or practically. Transit eases congestion, but the TTC is a money pit because of its overpaid union workers who can close down the city by striking when their demands aren't met.

Personally I like the idea of a city organized, self-financing car share program using golf cart style vehicles for the smaller road footprint and fuel consumption. I'm not holding my breath though.

This is rather interesting. George Smitherman promises to rid the city of the dreaded bedbug.

"Far too many people live with the scourge of bedbugs in Toronto,” he said in a statement. “It’s time public health did its job by stepping up inspections and clearly state what responsibilities landlords and tenants have to help fight bedbugs in their homes.

“We want to give people good, clear information about how they can actually get rid of bedbugs, and we want to create a confidential database that tracks where the bedbugs are so we can stay on top of it.”

http://www.thestar.com/news/elections/article/873183--the-daily-plank-war-on-bedbugs

His initial investment for the war on bedbugs is pegged at $3M. What should worry TO residents is the "confidential database" he would create of where bedbugs reside. Ontario e-health anyone?

What do all of the Torontonians think of their so called mayors-to-be, excluding Ford, for what happened in the dark hours of Monday night?

There can only be one person who is behind the nasty signs that were planted on University Ave last night.

One sign read "wife-beating rascist drunk for mayor!" there is another one but coudn't see it.

There is only one person who is behind these signs. There is nothing worse than a b-tchy male.

Our favourite cop, Cam Wooley said "Fortunately these kind of thing always backfire on the person."

There are stupid people who would rather have someone so unbalanced, for mayor, than to vote for Rob Ford. Maybe you all should seek counselling for everyone else's sake.

note: Rob Ford never touched his wife on that night. He got custody of his two children for the night and his wife went to counselling and all is well in the Ford family now. Everyone has problems including all who are on this site.

The "drunk" thing came when someone yelled something rotten to Rob's wife and he responded to the jerk. If any of you men would sit there and not stick up for your wife, then you are not a real man.

The "rascist" thing came when another boatload of Tamils landed on the west coast. The first boatful of Tamils ALL came to Toronto, and Ford said that Toronto cannot afford to have all of these immigrants come to the city.Which is true. Who do you think is paying for all of these people, we are taxed to death.

If you carpool you have to get special insurance. You have to go straight home, if you have a meeting or have to attend something you are out of luck. The transit as it stands, in the rush hours is terrible.

I thought it had to do with his drunk and stoned driving...

I thought it came about because of his attitudes towards asians.

"Those Oriental people work like dogs. They work their hearts out. They are workers non-stop. They sleep beside their machines. That's why they're successful in life. I went to Seoul, South Korea, I went to Taipei, Taiwan. I went to Tokyo, Japan. That's why these people are so hard workers (sic). I'm telling you, the Oriental people, they're slowly taking over."

Looks like some of our forum members were quite busy a few days ago!

Toronto's mayoral race got down and dirty early Tuesday.

Drivers along University Ave. had a brief glimpse of a handful of signs that seem to be targeting frontrunner Rob Ford.

Around 10 signs that read, "Wife-beating, racist drunk for mayor!" were planted in the University Ave. flowerbeds near Dundas St. W. at some point overnight

Sounds like much of the discourse we've heard in this forum from the Rob Ford hate crowd. How much is Smitherman paying you guys? Or perhaps he's just offering certain "favours?"

What kind of favours exactly?

I've heard some rumors, but I don't think it would be appropriate to publicly state them.

But you have already publicly mused...

How much is Smitherman paying you guys? Or perhaps he's just offering certain "favours?"

So will you retract this along with the foot in your mouth, will you admit that your lame assed joke is just a cock-up, or will you explain what the favours are?

I mean, someone with balls might do any of the 3 above...

There's no such thing as bad publicity, and if anybody proves that - Rob Ford does.

"Honey, what's that name I keep hearing ?"

"Rob Ford ?"

"Yeah... he beat somebody... or wants to cuts taxes or somethin'... think I'll vote for 'em..."

Not really. The hate Rob Ford crowd has been smearing him with assertions like that for the last several weeks.

Yes, but like I've said, it wouldn't be right to get specific. I'd then be no better than the folks behind the hateful signs.

I think I have already established you aren't, so that shouldn't be a concern.

Assertions backed up with criminal charges and in one case, a conviction.
