g_bambino Posted November 13, 2009 Report Posted November 13, 2009 (edited) I'm surprised this hasn't been posted on the boards already: Just a couple of days ago, Citizenship and Immigration revealed the new guide book for all prospective Canadian citizens; the last edition was done back in the mid '90s. Barbara Kay at the National Post has taken notice of one of the key additions to the new publication: Canada's openness and generosity do not extend to barbaric cultural practices that tolerate spousal abuse, 'honour killings,'...or other gender-based violence. It has also added much on Canada's history - including some controversial topics like Louis Riel and the Quiet Revolution - and ups the content about Canada's military past and constitutional structure, thereby replacing many of the pages on recycling and rainbows-and-gumdrops Canada in the old version put out by the Liberals. Veeerrry interesting... Discover Canada [c/e] Edited November 13, 2009 by g_bambino Quote
Smallc Posted November 13, 2009 Report Posted November 13, 2009 I mentioned it in another thread. I downloaded it last night (it was actually released yesterday). I think they did a great job and I think that all Canadians, not just those applying for citizenship, would learn something from it. I know I did. Quote
Michael Hardner Posted November 13, 2009 Report Posted November 13, 2009 There was a professor on CBC1 this morning talking about development of this book. He pointed repeatedly to Canada's 'Civic Heritage' as opposed to our ethnic or cultural heritage, which I thought was a great way to describe this country. M.Dancer Posted November 13, 2009 Report Posted November 13, 2009 Watching Evan Soloman on the CBC last night I could help get the feeling he was trying to find someone to say the booklet was silly. A number of times he asked, if it was necessary and would it do any good, ...no one, not even the spokesperson for muslim women would say anything against it, all calling needed and beneficial. http://www.cbc.ca/video/#/News/Politics/ID=1328708673 http://www.cbc.ca/video/#/News/Politics/ID=1328708673 Quote RIGHT of SOME, LEFT of OTHERS If it is a choice between them and us, I choose us

You know - Matt Galloway of CBC Radio One seemed to be doing the same thing come to think of it. The book sounded like a well thought out conservative response to immigration, addressing some recent concerns (I'm not saying they're founded or not here - let's leave that closed) about assimilation. They developed the approach of civic responsibility and our traditions of open society - something that should be welcomed by progressives, or at least one would thini. Galloway was pressing with questions - something to do with the removal of healthcare as a national value. As the guest pointed out - most countries have national healthcare so how does that define us. Quite smart, in that the only (tepid) response is that it makes us different than the US. Apparently they also removed references to recycling... Quote Click to learn why Climate Change is caused by HUMANS Michael Hardner

kimmy Posted November 13, 2009 Report Posted November 13, 2009 Watching Evan Soloman on the CBC last night I could help get the feeling he was trying to find someone to say the booklet was silly. He should have invited MP Jim Karygiannis. But Toronto MP Jim Karygiannis, member of the Commons' citizenship and immigration committee, says he's not convinced the study guide will accurately reflect Canada's multicultural history. Instead, by focusing on Canadian history writ large, the stories of immigrants will be ignored, he said."There's a lot of ethnicities that have come to Canada, made this their home, and over the years have fought and died for Canada" said Karygiannis, who was born in Greece. "But this guy (Kenney) ain't going to go that way. By reading all accounts, this guy's hell bent to say, 'This is the way it is,'" he said, adding that he doubts the guide will discuss any history that reflects negatively on Canada's treatment of minorities. Karygiannis also called the guide a political ploy. "What's wrong with the book that we have right now? Is it because it's written by Liberals?" he asked. "Here we've got the minister wanting to put his own stamp on it." -k Quote (╯°□°)╯︵ ┻━┻ Friendly forum facilitator! ┬──┬◡ノ(° -°ノ)

g_bambino Posted November 14, 2009 Author Report Posted November 14, 2009 ...no one, not even the spokesperson for muslim women would say anything against it, all calling needed and beneficial. Which is intriguing, given that one of the main differences between this incarnation of the book and its previous is that far less emphasis seems to have been placed on not offending anyone. The "barbaric" adjective in relation to honour killings and other misogynistic practices it perhaps the most glaring example, but the upped emphasis on Canada's military and the monarchy are also things the Liberals had previously shied away from, so as to not upset any immigrants, it was speculated. justme Posted November 15, 2009 Report Posted November 15, 2009 Here's a thought, if the First Nation had had a booklet how many of us would be here today? First Nations may have been here first, but did they create the economy, infrastructure, etc, that everyone - regardless of how long they've been here - benefits from today? Without rules, that which we all benefit from will be open to abuse. Personally, I respect honesty more than political correctness, and thus I think the changes that the Conservatives have made are spot on. If the Canadian military and the monarchy offend any immigrants, perhaps they should find somewhere else to live. I think that is essentially the direction in which the new immigration book is moving; it's akin to the required video that prospective immigrants to the Netherlands must watch as preparation for what awaits them in that country's liberal society.
