Smallc Posted October 17, 2009 Report Posted October 17, 2009 I really don't see where you guys get that idea from. For the most part, true conservatism is quite rare in Canada. The things that the Conservative party does while governing aren't that outside of the realm of something a CBC listener (there are many Alberta CBC listeners for example) or watcher would see as sensible. There isn't a great deal of media bias in Canada, and for some reason, people (especially those on the right) see it under every CBC (and CTV for that matter) rock. All 3 national networks are quite middle of the road with global being probably slightly to the right (but not right wing) and a great deal more sensational. Quote

Shwa Posted January 7, 2010 Report Posted January 7, 2010 thats why i love it!! They cut jPod and that's why I hate it. I rarely even bother watching No Hit League broadcasts anymore. They cut jPod and kept brain dead crap like Sophie, Little Mosque on the Prairie, Hearland, etc. Oh I will watch the odd Nature of Things or a documentary here and there, but I would much rather watch PBS. If they want to make up for the travesty of dropping jPod, they can air Pontypool on a Sunday night. Until then, the CBC just ain't cool. Quote

DrGreenthumb Posted January 7, 2010 Report Posted January 7, 2010 (edited) I thought Mansbridge's interview with the PM was lame, and he was way to easy on the PM. I guess he knows if he doesn't treat the Perogy Prime Minister with kid gloves, he wouldn't ever get another interview. Edited January 7, 2010 by DrGreenthumb Quote

wyly Posted January 8, 2010 Report Posted January 8, 2010 I thought Mansbridge's interview with the PM was lame, and he was way to easy on the PM. I guess he knows if he doesn't treat the Perogy Prime Minister with kid gloves, he wouldn't ever get another interview. that's it pretty much...I've recall a few interviews where a journalist has a politician cornered and then doesn't have the balls to ask the killer question, disappointing...I remember watching a BBC program Hardtalk when it was hosted by Tim Sebastian, he was brutal and relentless, on one occasion he kept repeating the killer question and not getting an answer he asked "You're not going to answer the question are you?" "No" came the reply...that's great journalism...compared with Bill O'reilly when had GWB cornered on the torture question of waterboarding, then let him slip away... Oleg Bach Posted January 9, 2010 Report Posted January 9, 2010 It's hard to pin point whey the CBC exists at this point in time. There must be some abscure reason that everyone has over looked. If you were to give the average CBC employee on every level of this public company an alernative..ultimatium..and say to these people - You have one choice and make it now - either become unemployed and eventually end up on the welfare rolls OR produce nothing but extreme right wing programing...I imagine that 99.9% of the staff would whin a bit and posture for a while but they would submit to the offer contained in this monetary threat to action. So really why are they kept in existance..with a conservative governement in power - or say a perminent right wing governement in power for that matter? It becomes clear that the only purpose of the CBC is to provide the people with a false sense of liberalism..a false sense of hope in some sort of abilty or capcity to bring about change - in other words it is to amuse and confuse and occupy the common mass..it give people the feeling they are free...and those that are free or assume in such are the easiest to control. We live in a very very clever and sophisticated dictatorship - The conservatives could wipe out the CBC with the stroke of a pen but keep it around because it is useful in providing a diversion that is institutional in scope. Wild Bill Posted January 10, 2010 Report Posted January 10, 2010 too funny...I wish they would try wipe out the CBC, the conservatives would be wiped out in the next election...Canadians love their CBC... Actually, polls have consistently showed for decades now that they DON'T! Their ratings, except for a few highlights that could be kept by other networks, have always frankly sucked! Seems to me that if you were right the ratings would be high to support your premise. Quote "A government which robs Peter to pay Paul can always depend on the support of Paul." -- George Bernard Shaw "There is no point in being difficult when, with a little extra effort, you can be completely impossible."
Smallc Posted January 10, 2010 Report Posted January 10, 2010 Actually, CBC radio has phenomenal ratings, and CBC TV has improving ratings. Also, polls show that people think the CBC should have more support. Quote
Oleg Bach Posted January 12, 2010 Report Posted January 12, 2010 CBC should be radio and nothing else- okay give them a web site and some streaming capablities..but as far as making them some sort of publically supported producers of entertainment or supposed supporters of culture...forget it! If a culture exists at all it needs no support - If a culture needs to be artifically created it needs the CBC - I like real culture...that happens on it's own. Quote
fellowtraveller Posted January 14, 2010 Report Posted January 14, 2010 (edited) it's stupid because journalists have all the power, politicians need them not the reverse... Speaking of stupid, you don't understand this game at all. JOurnalists don't have shows and then don't have jobs if they ask their guests very difficult questions, because then other guests refuse to come on the show and get embarassed. No guests, no viewers, no show. That is why interviewers are almost always tossing up softball after softball. If Peter Mansbridge interviewed Hitler, he'd ask him about this painting and love of dogs. A young master at this is George Stromwhatever, who tosses up easy questions but does it with body language that makes him appear to be aggressive. It helps that the one mildly awkward question is preced and succeeded by relentless sucking up. Excellent technique. And they come back to his show and so do their celebrity friends.
