I can't get the link to work...me neither...

Does it really matter? Nobody can get Afghanistan to work.

more of how "Afghanistan is portrayed in the media":

from the Economist - "Losing Afghanistan?"

The war is going badly. Much of the south of the country is out of government control. A scattered, disparate insurgency has gained strength and risks turning into a widespread insurrection against Western forces and the elected government they are backing (see article). In Britain, a sceptical public wonders what its soldiers are dying for. And as the costs and casualties continue to mount, Americans too will ask that question increasingly loudly

from Republican as "they come", George Will - Washington Post - "Time to Get Out of Afghanistan"

U.S. forces are being increased by 21,000, to 68,000, bringing the coalition total to 110,000. About 9,000 are from Britain, where support for the war is waning. Counterinsurgency theory concerning the time and the ratio of forces required to protect the population indicates that, nationwide, Afghanistan would need hundreds of thousands of coalition troops, perhaps for a decade or more. That is inconceivable.

So, instead, forces should be substantially reduced to serve a comprehensively revised policy: America should do only what can be done from offshore, using intelligence, drones, cruise missiles, airstrikes and small, potent Special Forces units, concentrating on the porous 1,500-mile border with Pakistan, a nation that actually matters.

Genius, said de Gaulle, recalling Bismarck's decision to halt German forces short of Paris in 1870, sometimes consists of knowing when to stop. Genius is not required to recognize that in Afghanistan, when means now, before more American valor, such as Allen's, is squandered.

ya, ya... about that Harper Conservative drive to beef up the military... in the name of "defense"... uhhh... abroad!

I think the one consistent thing we hear is soldiers being killed.

Two more Canadians soldiers tonight.

When a staunch conservative like George Will is saying things are bad, getting worse, and, potentially should end perhaps it's time to take notice.

I'm surprised the Cheney/Wolfowitz/Rumsfeld/Krystol(sp) cabal never learned from history? The British never conquered Afghanistan...The Rusians could'nt...And now,NATO(Specifically the US) are'nt going to do it either.Mr.Harper is a member of the "Pre-emptive War" cabal. It's going to be interesting to watch how they spin this going forward.

However, there is a caveat that might throw a little water on the doom and gloom. If people have been paying attention to the fortunes of the Taliban in Pakistan,it seems things are getting bad for the bad guys there. As I understand it,it seems some of the tribal folks within Pakistan are'nt terribly interested in the Taliban's version of Islam being shoved down their throats, and have risen up.The current leadership within the the Taliban is in a state of confusion with the death of the latest leader(who's name escapes me at the moment),and an muderous power struggle has ensued to fill the void.

Not really....as Mr. Will behaved identically with the invasion of Iraq, with strong initial support and waning interest for even the prospects of a surge. Perfect pundit material.

The British are having another go at it too.

And just why would the Taliban be needin' roach nests in Pakistan these days?

I agree! Why should we spend blood and dollars just so that Afghani girls can go to school! And if they're raped by the Taliban they deserve whatever they get for bringing dishonour on their families!

If they had of been wearing their burkhas like proper women it never would have happened!

I'm behind your values 100%, Waldo!

some knowledgeable thinking types are taking notice... like Chuck Krulak - General, USMC (Ret), 31st Commandant of the Marine Corps who penned this email to George Will after reading Will's article, "Time to Get Out of Afghanistan":

... First and foremost, let me say that I am in total agreement with your assessment. Simply put, no desired end state has ever been clearly articulated and no strategy formulated that would lead us to achieve even an ill defined end state.

The fastest and easiest way to defeat the Taliban has always been to just leave them to their own devices where they'll be forced to defend their own brand of Islam on its own merits.

I can't think of anything that inspires lasting reforms leading to human rights and democracy better than not having them. That said things like the military and industrial complexes and foreign policies of other countries usually interfere with and delay their natural development.
