bush_cheney2004 Posted April 7, 2009 Report Posted April 7, 2009 Please enlighten us! Omigod....you really don't know...do you? So perhaps you would also recall that the same president also said there's no problem with Iran having one or two atomic bombs in one of his speeches. Yes...right before he bombs them! DogOnPorch Posted April 7, 2009 Report Posted April 7, 2009 So perhaps you would also recall that the same president also said there's no problem with Iran having one or two atomic bombs in one of his speeches. That's not quite how it happened... PARIS -- French President Jacques Chirac said in an interview with three newspapers that Iran's possession of a nuclear bomb wouldn't be "very dangerous" and that if it used the weapon on Israel, Tehran would be immediately "razed."Chirac -- who made the comments during a Monday interview with The New York Times, The International Herald Tribune and Le Nouvel Observateur, a weekly magazine -- called reporters back the next day to try to have his quotes retracted. http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/conte...7020100109.html Quote Nothing cracks a turtle like Leon Uris.
bush_cheney2004 Posted April 7, 2009 Report Posted April 7, 2009 And of course...outnumbered 2-1 in carriers and 10-1 in surface ships, the Americans still won the Battle of Midway. Those bastard American cheated again (code breakers) ! Makes those historic turning points that much sweeter. Yep...just like Chicken McNuggets in Tokyo. Quote Economics trumps Virtue.

No...did what we WANTED to....what we COULD do...what we WILL do...if necessary. August1991 Posted April 7, 2009 Report Posted April 7, 2009 For once we seem to be all finding a consensus here. Nuke free is just a dream. Pipe dream. We will always have one, by default, if only to maintain "balance of power", and with our generous example, who'd fancy to drop theirs? It's also an incorrect description of what Obama is proposing.Obama did not call for a nuclear-free world. He just urged nations to reduce the stockpile and to control testing. "Today the Cold War has disappeared but thousands of those weapons have not." He pledged to reduce the US nuclear stockpile, and urged others to do the same. But as long as a nuclear threat existed, the US would retain its nuclear capability, although it would work to reduce its arsenal. BBCThis thread's title is just plain wrong. Quote

Oleg Bach Posted April 7, 2009 Report Posted April 7, 2009 ...and hardly a new idea. President Reagan did both in spades. Forty years later and it's the same old stuff. The sun is a huge nuke. If mankind brought a little chunk of the sun to earth then perhaps he made a mistake. If we could go back in time I am sure that we would send this bit of hell back to hell where it belongs - but - some will say that nukes calm down and lessen conventional warfare...I don't see any evidence of that. In fact it reminds me of a couple of feuding peeps who have Ak 47s in the closet and amuse themselves by having a prolonged sling shot fight - It really is quite rediculous. Quote

Or worse yet...could just zap the big with a concentrated beam of nuclear fire collected in the lens....oh no - does that mean I grow up to be a serial killer? And get it right - you say cheese and God takes your picture...by the way - I just heard - and due to rising unemployment....You might be interested...seeing their is a power vacume in hell at present...They have no leader...The job is open....AND there is a pension! Oleg Bach Posted April 7, 2009 Report Posted April 7, 2009 We were inspired by Obama's clarion call and have declared our fridge, toaster and liquor cabinet nuclear free. Careful with the liquor cabinet....a chain reaction could take place within a bottle of gin...and you could have a melt down...Liquor cabinet? Boy - wish I was that classy - If we had a liquor cabinet growing up it would be empty all of the time and we would live a liquor free zone...often wondered about classy types and their booze box ...always assmed that rich educated folks could control their drinking and poor guys like me were just weak common drunks - then I figured it out...Rich people just keep filling the cabinet before it runs out and they drink all of it just like poor people - they just have a never ending supply...and I don't... Obama is like Mayor Miller of Toronto - he declares the city a gun free zone...or a murder free zone if you wish - works great... And like all lefties - he shows sympathy for mental patients who have a melt down and push a couple of teen agers in front of a subway train. The apologists step forward and say - "The pusher did not take his medication" - and the potential killer states.... "I did not take my don't push people on to the subway track pill today" sorry.....just thought I would toss that in... Yah _ I declare that we are all happy and rich and in love...there - I can do it too you know.. Quote

Damn - what are we little devils to do with out a job? BC ...maybe another planet might need a little chaos to brighten things up...joke aside ...was up north for the oldest brothers birthday - forgot what a sky at night really looks at..scared me....could have been the hang over and the prime rib kicking back at 4 in the morning..just between you and I - when I looked up into eternity and saw the past - I came to the renewed conclution - that I am not god after all and nor are you - so we are both out of the god and devil buisness...wonder if there are any openings for earth angels??? Had enough for today...all is well - hope you are fine - love to all... subchannel out! Quote
WIP Posted April 8, 2009 Report Posted April 8, 2009 (edited) ...and hardly a new idea. President Reagan did both in spades. That's right. Although when Reagan had his summit with Gorbachev at Reykjavik, he did a 180 and almost gave away the store! Driven by this dream, Reagan embraced Mikhail Gorbachev and initiated a series of negotiations that ultimately alarmed everyone in his administration. Hardliners like Patrick Buchanan, Richard Perle, and Caspar Weinberger reacted in horror to the very idea of engaging the Soviets in such talks, warning against the "grand illusion" of peace. "Reagan is a weakened president, weakened in spirit as well as clout," echoed New Right leader Paul Weyrich in The Washington Post. Administration pragmatists like George Shultz and Robert McFarlane, who supported negotiations but believed in deterrence, were shocked by how far Reagan took them. At the Reykjavik summit, he and Gorbachev almost agreed to the "zero option" to eliminate both sides' thermonuclear arms. Reagan's unwillingness to give up his cherished missile-defense program doomed the agreement, though the talks did yield the signature arms-reduction pact of his presidency, the 1987 INF treaty. WIP Posted April 8, 2009 Report Posted April 8, 2009 I agree with you...........there are to many Nukes out there, even if Russia and the U.S. cuts their nuke arsenal in half they can still kill each other many times over! if they both launch on each other at the same time it will be over in 20 minutes, it is a catch 22 we don't like them but we need them to prevent an attack, as far as Iran goes my personal opinion is we should take them out right now why wait until they go Nuclear? but rest Assured the Israeli's will deal that blow. The bottom line is with all the countries and terrorist groups trying to get their hands on a Nuke and willingness to use them... we will be lucky to see the next 5 years! But how many nuclear warheads are necessary to have deterrence? According to the Brookings Institute, the United States still has more than 10,000 nuclear warheads. That may be less than there was 20 years ago, but it's still enough to destroy the earth many times over! myata Posted April 8, 2009 Author Report Posted April 8, 2009 Today I heard Pres. Obama saying that due to its role in the matter, US has the responsibility to show the lead now. I can't disagree with that and any move forward is better than nothing for all of us. So I'll reserve my judgement for awhile, to see how it would translate into real act. Are we going to wait for Iran and N.Korea to show us the way, or we gonna do something ourselves. Quote If it's you or them, the truth is equidistant

GostHacked Posted April 8, 2009 Report Posted April 8, 2009 You would only get some kind of world wide reduction in nukes if there was one world government or world entity. World government is not somethign that sits well with me. Quote
myata Posted April 8, 2009 Author Report Posted April 8, 2009 The US is no more responsible for such leadership now than the Russian Federation, United Kingdom, France, or China. Well, let's remember who's started the ball rolling. By bringing the thing to fruition and actually using it. But then, again, it ties into how one'd define responsibility. It's really a self imposed thing that can't be assigned from outside. Quote If it's you or them, the truth is equidistant
