Isn't it time to slow down immigration?

Recommended Posts

The low birth rate in 'the West' is caused by a number of factors coming together. Woman's emancipation plus birth control being the main factors. Not to mention babies are expensive to have without government support. Immigration from countries with neither birth control nor women's rights is somehow supposed to fix this 'problem'. Is it really a problem, though? Wasn't the 'battle-cry' of the past supposed to be zero population growth? WTF has changed? Suddenly overpopulation is now a good thing? I f**king hate politicians.

Being second largest and 36th by population, Canada is VERY, VERY FAR from running into the overpopulation problem.

From a politician's point of view - more people = more taxes ;)

More people = More consumers = Stronger economy

Only if these people are putting something into the economy. Having these people on welfare is just like giving the money straight to the corporations where they are likely to shop a la Wal Mart. Fully funded by our government.

Which is why we need to get the new Doctors and dentists Canadian certified quickly upon arrival so they can start contributing.

Out of the low-income immigrants - 9% rely on social assistance.

Out of the low-income non-immigrant Canadians - 22% rely on social assistance.

That could be hard for you to swallow but it comes straight from HRSDC.

Immigration is fine...we were all immigrants at one time............however having said that we should be careful when letting people from Islamic countries in.............after all who knows who is a terrorist and who isn't......these people need to be better screened.

Not hard to swallow at all. It's probably accurate.

I'm not saying that Canadian born citizens are above any other.

My whole point is that everyone as a society has to work hard. We seem to be in a period of public mentality where it says that 'it's ok not to work, the government will cut me a cheque'. This has been born out of left wing ideals that government knows best directly relating to the length of term for the LPC.. It's a socialist mentality and we have to change that way of thinking as best we can for the betterment of Canada.

You aren't?

What was this then....

Walk into any OHIP or Social Service office in any bigger city and tell me what you see there.

No amount of spin will deny the truth.

How long can we afford to do this in these times of economic uncertainty?

We need skilled workers.

Thats called profiling. The vast majority of Islamic people are not terrorists.

PC: More people = More consumers = Stronger economy

That's the BS line fed to me, as well. However, consumption wasn't the worry a generation ago...it was ZPG. Besides, look at where our lovely consumer society has gotten us. Go...consume some more. Our economy needs you. Buy on credit if possible.

I'm refering to World overpopulation. However...Canada, apparently, has the highest immigration rate on the planet. So let's fill it up as fast as possible? To say overpopulation isn't affecting Canada just shows me you've never attempted to drive Vancouver's morning rush "hour". Or, if you have, you can't remember a time when it was actually a pleasant drive.

Canada's major populated zone is a thin band near the south...the rest is not very suitable except for the toughest (or most foolish) individuals. There's a reason the North has so few people...and even fewer immigrants.

In my opinion, Canada is a cheap whore amoungst other nations with more self respect. She'll screw over her own population in order to bring in an immigrant who'll hopefully vote "the right way" or has a suitcase full of cash. You may or may not have a different opinion. That doesn't make you right.

I am sure thats true.......but its the ones who are the terrorists or have connections with terrorists we have to watch ..... sad times we live in but we can't tell the bad from the good...so all i am saying is be very careful who we let in and make sure we check them out real good before they are allowed entry into our country......it may be profiling but if we don't watch these people they will be blowing up things here soon.......CSIS has already foiled an attack on Harper a while back.......make no mistake the enemy is already here!

The vast majority of LG fridges don't burst into flames and burn down your house.

Nevertheless, I don't buy LG fridges. There are others available which don't come with the same dangers.

Please cite a credible reference for this assertion.

You are contradicting every known study on immigration in Canada with this remark.

Immigrants in Canada have a higher level of education, lower levels of welfare usage, lower levesl of unemployment claims and way lower rates of prison incarceration time than white-Canadian born citizens. The numbers aren't even close.

On economic performance

However, the evidence shows that despite having high levels of education, the economic performance of immigrants relative to the Canadian-born population has deteriorated. Many immigrants find it difficult to secure well-paying jobs and their earnings tend to be well below those of the Canadian-born population.

On literacy

Immigrants aged 16 to 65 performed significantly below the average for the Canadian- born population in all four domains. Perhaps contrary to expectation, duration of residence in Canada appeared to have no significant impact on the average performance of immigrants in any of the four domains.

Stats Canada Immigration and Literacy Problems

also

Analysis of census data as of 2000 shows that immigrant incomes were at 80% of the national average after 10 years of residing in Canada.[10] In previous decades, immigrant income levels did rise to the national average after 10 years, but in recent years the situation has deteriorated. A 2003 study published by Statistics Canada noted that "in 1980 recent immigrants had low-income rates 1.4 times that of Canadian born, by 2000 they were 2.5 times higher, at 35.8%."[6] The study noted that the deterioration was widespread and affected most types of immigrants. The 2003 study explains that the low-income rate among non-immigrants declined in the 1990s, but this was more than offset by the income profile of new immigrants, resulting in a net rise in Canada's total low-income rate. An updated January 2007 study by Statistics Canada, explains that the deterioration continued into the next decade, with the low-income rate of recent immigrants reaching rates of 3.5 times that of Canadian born in 2002 and 2003, before edging back to 3.2 times in 2004.[7] The 2007 study explains that this deterioration has occurred even though Canada implemented changes in 1993 to encourage more highly educated immigrants, with 45% of new immigrants having university degrees as of 2004, compared to 13% in the early 1990s.

This hoary old cliché wasn't worth posting a first time, but evidently you are quite taken with it and think it clever.

Obviously, you somehow feel that you're some sort of an immigrant with seniority or distinction...after all, those Europeans did come here in a boat and as I said, I really don't think they'd all go back to Europe :-)

Every human born on this continent is descended from someone who migrated here in the past. The same could be said for Europeans or Asians or Indians. That has no relevancy whatsoever to anything under discussion.

So does this mean that the immigrants of seniority --European descent--somehow have the right to whine about more recent immigrants?

Recently, Canada's growth rate has been slightly higher than in the United States. In 2004/2005, the last year for which statistics were available, the United States increased at a rate of 9.3 per 1,000, compared to 9.6 in Canada.

Yea...fewer Canadians are fleeing to the USA compared to before.

Without Europeans this country wouldn't be what it is today. It wouldn't be here for others to take advantage of.

Did you know that one of the first boat load of Europeans were stuck in an ice jam on the St Lawerence and would've died if the indians didn't save them? They were suffering from scurvy so the next boat load came with lemons and limes and that is how the nickname limeys came to be

It means the people who live here have the right to ascertain what is in THEIR own best interests, and decide what type of immigrant they do and do not want living among them and making use of the services they have built up.

Is this concept extraordinarily difficult for you?
