1 in 5 people in Canada are now immigrants

Recommended Posts

Recent immigrants born in Asia (including the Middle East) made up the largest proportion (58.3%) of newcomers to Canada.

For the first time, allophones, that is, people whose mother tongue is neither English nor French, represented fully one-fifth of the population of Canada, according to the census.

The 2006 Census enumerated 6,186,950 foreign-born people in Canada. They accounted for virtually one in five (19.8%) of the total population, the highest proportion in 75 years.

The Toronto, Montreal and Vancouver census metropolitan areas (CMAs) were home to 68.9% of the recent immigrants in 2006. In contrast, slightly more than one-quarter (27.1%) of Canada's total population lived in these three CMAs.

Sort of goes hand-in-hand with the statistics that show that Toronto has the highest level of dubiously-defined "poverty" in Canada. Of course most New Canadians - especially refugees - have incomes that are below Statistics Canada Low Income Cutoff. These people have come to Canada seeking a new life - they usually start with very little, if anything - and many require social assistance for an extended period until they get settled. While we should take note of the challenges of first generation new Canadians, true poverty should really be measured by the circumstances of second generation Canadians. In other words, did the parents' sacrifices and Canadian support systems result in a second generation that was more capable of fully participating in Canadian society?

The Statscan report also mentioned the racism associated with the newcomers. In this, it is not much different that the 1930s when Irish, Ukrainians, Chinese, Japanese and others were subject to attacks. I wonder how many of those who once faced the same problems are now the ones responsible for today's racism?

My mother beat the Irish out of me. "I am not your fickin' mutter, he is not your bleedin' fahter and you do not tink" she would say (*thwack* one to the head,*thwack one about the jowls). My father would sit and watch and sometimes say "och caillech, canna ye leave da poor Cailean to pick up hees engleesh aloon?

...it was later she discovered I had a speech impediment so bad I could barely pronounce impediment.

I have to laugh at the "racism" part. People don't want to be swamped with foreign cultures, and that's called "racism?" What trash.

How about bigotry ?

By the way, I have seen you - Scott - write about your distaste for the infusion of Muslims and Chinese. Is this distaste present for all non-Canadians ?

How about Americans ?

British ?

Scots ?

East Indians ?

It seems like it is a lot higher than that.

Politically correct television commercials and media advertisements portray a disproportionate number of foreigners and Blacks that lead viewers and readers to believe that Canada's Black and foreign population somewhat equals Canada's White population.

What a relief!

Poeple wouldn't mind immigrants..

Sorry.. Let me start over.

Tax payers wouldn't mind immigrants coming to Canada if they were of a proveable financial benefit as they are in the US. Instead, statcan shows that too-large of a chunck of the modern immigrants are without work and in poverty. This destroys our welfare state and communist healthcare system.

It's insane to have an immigration policy that allows this. That's why there are checks and balances before you enter a country - those checks and balances usually require A JOB . Canada is different though. We are here to exist only to help the Liberal Party of Canada stay in power. This is how corrupt our country has become. Hell, my tax dollars fund this very website.

They have also hijacked our political system to a point almost beyond repair.

Did anyone see the cover of the Globe and Mail today?

It would if you live in an ethnic neighbourhood.

I can solve your problem quite easily.

Get colour TV.

Our airwaves are filled with ethnic peoples in adverts? I thought you were posting in that "white male bashing in TV advertisements" last month. What changed?

More Vietnamese thanks , and while we are at it , lets see, how about some Argentinians.

I want more Pho and good quality beef houses.

The sun rose in the east again this morning. Phew...I was getting worried.

There was an ecudorean butcher in Summerhill/rosedale for a spell.....the meat was kinda tough and stringy ....but it was price pointed for the carriage trade market.

Myself I would like more south asians and northern europeans....it so hard to get good take out colcannon these days and I only know one specialty shop that make a decent haggis. Heck, I am forced to get my tubed cod roe at Ikea :(!

I trade every useless white welfare bum for an asian, african immigrant that works any day. Unfortunately thats not how things go. We have to keep our current bloodsuckers, and happily import more.

Just keep working, you few who do...........your taxes need to pay for more welfare. ;)

Have you tried John Baird yet? He seems to have great walk-in traffic for such a crappy spot.

But you can have every ounce of Haggis that comes near me. Not my taste.

Now colcannon....wonderful, but the ******* better leave out the coins next time or they can pay the dentist.

You can also have the fish squirt stuff. Give me Iranian , oh..add them to my list too, caviar anyday

So if this board is any indication of the larger group it is quite apparent that a majority of those who call themselves "conservative" do not like immigrants? I'm not sure yet but do conservatives dislike ALL immigrants or just the ones with non-white skin and a religion other than evangelical christion?

reminds me of the anti-chinese leaugue of the Emily Murphy days.

In all fairness, though, I think we should be finding people who are more interested in becoming Canadians, though. I'm not saying that all people who immigrate from China or who are Muslims don't have this intention. Some want to escape from deplorable living and political/social conditions. It's just that in my personal experience I've noticed that people from China in particular seem to view Canada merely as a place to accumulate personal wealth for the betterment of their lifestyle in China. As for Muslims, well, where to begin... As well meaning and nice as most Muslims may be, they bring with them in some cases the seeds of future problems already seen in places like Britain and France. These are problems that won't be negated by a more tolerant and accomodating society such as Canada's, because the problems are inherent to Islam and will always fester where there are larger groups of Muslims. It's not the same as what has happened in the past with other ethnic groups arriving in Canada, where they did settle down and assimilate. On the other hand, if you look at the influx of eastern Europeans and Ukrainians in the early 1900s and look at the impact that this had on labour radicalism, the spread of Communism and Socialism in this country, and how it has continued to have a lasting effect, we do see what could potentially happen when another large group of people with a strong ideological identity establish themselves in Canada.
