What was the last movie you watched?
overthere replied to Moonlight Graham's topic in Arts and Culture
Agree. There are plenty of quality movies made and distributed, and they make just enough money to keep them being made. Increasing I find myself unable to bother watching the serial action blockbusters. They are loud and wild, but ultimately just kind of boring overall. Walking or driving home from the theater, what is there to do but yawn? And they have something in common besides big budgets: they are not very good on TV when they eventually hit cable. No plot and small screen= sleepytime. You're also right about the quality of television- it has never been better and there is zero credit due to the traditional networks for that reality. Like recorded music a generation ago, and book publishing to a lesser extent, broadcast TV is undergoing a massive business shift. Hello, Internets. -
Pro Life? Then Don't Run Under Liberal Banner

Well, a couple of generations of women would agree that not having any abortion law does exactly that- allows women reproductive choices in Canada. It is actually fiendishly clever in its simplicity. There is nothing for the prolife crew to challenge since the issue never gets to a court. Looks like Mr Trudeau would like to change all that into an American style rodeo of endless litigation and court challenge. Why would you support that? Women must maintain their right to reproductive choice, as they do now and have done for 25+ years under leaders that recognize the status quo suffices quite nicely. Is that clear enough for Mr Trudeau? Apparently not. -
Tyrion did not throw Jorah under the bus. He pled his case strongly in the audience with Danerys, but stepped back when he saw that she was intent on banning Jorah. Letting him live was an accomplishment for Tyrion, and he won't give up on reinstating him with the Queen of Dragons. Peter Dinklage just keeps getting better all the time.

Pro Life? Then Don't Run Under Liberal Banner
overthere replied to Big Guy's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
That is a very weak attempt to dodge another stupid move by Trudeau. Successive Liberal and Tory PMs have taken what is clearly the very least complex route to maintaining the right of Canadian women to abortion: do nothing in Parliament, nothing that can lead to a court of Charter challenge. No abortion law. That approach has worked very well for women for about 27 years, since 1988. A 'vote' in Parliament implies legislation, which will result in exactly what prolifers want: cases in court. Or is Trudeau going to introduce some vague, pointless, toothless resolution as a 'gesture of support'?. He is increasingly ridiculous and apparently intent on insulting the intelligence of women. -

Incorrect. Harper has refused to get abortion in front of Parliament, refused to implement any kind of law. Why? Because law creates legal challenge, which is a goal of the prolifers for decades in Canada. For decades, prolifers have made no headway at all because they cannot get a case in the courts at basically any level. They cannot get any kind of Charter challenge going because there is nothing for the courts to do. Yet for inexplicable reasons you support Trudeau, who you claim will force a vote on womens right to choose when they already have the right to choose now? Why would you do that and enable some dilettante fool in Parliament to give the prolifers the tools required to gain some traction? They really have none now, what is your agenda here? Hmmmmm? Why do you hate women and support the proflife camp? -
Lawrie for Donaldson etc was a straight up salary bail by Billy Beane, a classic move. It is too early to assess the result, takesa season or three, but this looks like a steal for the Jays. They'll be struggling to make .500 again this season. Same old same old. On the other side of the coin, Jose Reyes is starting to look very old and very expensive.

Hi did not imply that or show that on the screen, and you keep repeating this nonsense. Watch the movie, then come back here and edit or delete your posts.

I reckon you are on of those skeptics who does not understand that the budget will balance itself.

How so? Harper has been very clear that while he personally does not personally agree with abortion, he has no intention of changing the status quo- which is essentially that there is no law, abortion is a medical procedure and a matter for a woman and her physician- not legislators.. He has had ten years to act otherwise. Martin (2 years) and Chretien(13 years) were also PMs who felt exactly the same as Harper and acted exactly the same as Harper. How can any of them be more forthright than to refuse to act when they could easily do so as Prime Minister? Trudeau of course, has no ability to do anything but talk. Acting on anything is, thankfully, well outside his pay grade for now. -
Your choice was made when you chose to have unprotected sex and a child was conceived. There is no reason for the state to assume a lifetime financial burden for your choice. Nobody ever forces you to be a father, meaning a person who accepts the emotional responsibility for a young life. But when you voluntarily choose to donate the sperm, you take the risk that there are lifetime consequences. It is pretty simple..

How could they be worse? The Queen, her brother and Queen Cersei are all captive. Tommen must be wondering if he is next. I see LittleFinger intervening.... and gaining advantage... The working class? There is no working class in a medievel society. Peasants, slaves, clergy, guilds, warriors, ruling class.

I do wish you'd stop pretending that organized labour- unions- have some altruistic national or regional interest at work. It is really quite silly and juvenile. The purpose of a union is to advance the interests of its members. If union leaders forget this, they lose their jobs. Of course, they love to pretend they are some kind of social evangelists who know best for everybody, but fortunately very few people believe this baloney any more And of course organized labour loathes small business, which is very rarely unionized and very often owned and operated by entrepreneurs- their sworn enemies. And you and others had best wake the f*** about the reality of oil economics in 2015. Whether it is heavy oil or upgraded heavy oil, what is needed is not Canadian refining because we already have enough capacity for the refined products. There is no market in Canada for the refined products. What is urgently needed is infrastructure to get our product to any country not named the United Sates. They have us by the short and curlies because they are our only customer, and increasingly do not need our energy products.. The name of the infrastructure is pipeline. Pipeline to salt water, and ideally very big pipelines to both coasts. Now. It's obvious. Let's stop talking and get it done. -
BC First Nations lose social funding?
overthere replied to jacee's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
Ummm no. First Nations do not think of themselves as 'reporting to The Crown'. Negotiating , yes. Reporting, no. -
The Lannisters just won a war at Kings Landing. What happened to that army? There used to be tons of sellswords around- where did they go? When did Cersei and The Royals start wandering around unguarded?

Are Fire Fighters wasting our money?
overthere replied to Boges's topic in Provincial Politics in Canada
It can be a dangerous job, but the pay and benefits are excellent. I had occasion to do business with a bunch of firefighters last year. It was instructive to learn that a majority had another job. Most were involved in either building, renovations or property services. Two were general contractors renovating/building houses and one of those was a significant builder doing about a dozen new homes per year. Others had businesses like grounds maintenance, building decks, roofing courier services and so on. They worked together and that was ideal, they know their schedules well in advance, get big chunks of time off and can plan work around it. -
I don't get how Cersei can suddenly get captured by a couple of religious nuts. Where is the Kings Guard that used to accompany her everywhere? The Lannister armies? The unusual reaction would be to move in and kill every Sparrow. Or did Kings Landing become Salt Lake City and nobody mentioned it?

Why wouldn't they have some serious input to what happens on their land? Turn it around. I decide I'm going to drill a gas well in your back yard without permission, discussion or compensation. You wouldn't have a problem with that, because that is what you expect from people with brown skin. -
And the contract is front end loaded. The last CBA restricted teams ability to do that with players contracts, guess it doesn't apply to coaches... It won't be management or the players that drive Babcock or anybody else out. It is the media and fans. And it will start right now, not in two years. There is no time off in Leaf Nation. The pressure will be relentless.
-
That is pretty funny. The pressure to win will start May 21, 2015. Reports say that the contract is heavily front loaded and has an out clause for Babcock. Oh my. Shanny what have you done? McLellan got $3 million per year for five years in Edmonton. Quenneville is reportedly making $2.75 in Chicago. Every coach in the league will eventually get a fat raise because of Babcock.

I get this persistent noise way deep in my head sometimes. I think it is saying Kill Them All.

Alberta Election May 2015
overthere replied to Michael Hardner's topic in Provincial Politics in Canada
Notley has chosen Brian Topp as her chief of staff. This should be interesting as Topp has been a frequent, vocal and rabid Alberta hater in the past. I wonder if the AB or national press will call him out anytime soon on his history? -

Just saw 'Ex Machina'. Cool, compelling, different and highly recommended. Instant cult classic IMO. -
The Hawks will miss the minutes played by Rozsival, and the Ducks will comes after their defence like rabid dogs. I still like the Hawks though, a balanced and deep team. This might be their last kick at a Cup, they have cap problems and might lose a couple of players like Sharp and Seabrook this summer.

When she continually talked over Prentice and Jean and the moderator did nothing to try and display a little common courtesy- I turned it off. -
team loaded with good players, no playoff results. best coach in the league excuses? No, just explaining why Babcock probably won't end up in Edmonton unless he is promised the things I noted on the hockey operations side. And of course a lot of money and term. He will get all those things, but likely not in Edmonton.
