Alberta's climate change policy announced.
overthere replied to a topic in Provincial Politics in Canada
correct. Base load. Right , so you must OVERBUILD capacity with natural gas to meet the BASE LOAD. That is a massive amount of capital wasted entirely. I pay for that too. Alberta has had it for industrial and commercial customers- the big users- for decades. I used to manage large facilities and this was a factor to be reckoned with. Yes, I know you want me to get up at 3 AM to make the toast for the kids because the rate is less then. Yes, and haven't we all seen how cooperative provinces can be on energy files and projects? Im sure BC would provide AB with power at very attractive rates. We've also seen how other nations work this- Germany for example shut down many nuclear plants and pretended to replace it with renewable. They did build some renewable but the BASE LOAD was msotly repalced by power from Poland, who generate it in... wait for it..... coal plants. Why would Germany do this? Because coal is cheap and nuclear is not. rubbing balloons on our heads? Shuffling feet on carpets? Please tell me more about the advances in static electricity. -
Help me out here. I see Trudeau, a gaggle of federal ministers, and some Provincial premiers in a photo op at a Paris slaughter memorial. I also see Denis Coderre, the mayor of Montreal. What possible reason could there be to have Coderre -a mayor- there as part of the Canadian delegation?

"Our Vancouver Mayor, Gregor Is also there. Do you have a problem with that too? "
yes. WTF does he have to offer, other than being another LIberal hack?. If there were any relevant mayors to attend they would be the mayors of Edmonton and Calgary, both their cities are central in the energy industry that feeds so many Canadians across Canada. But enither did attend, they were home getting ready towlecome Syrian refugees depsite their economies being under siege. '...

Their bullpen is still weak, they need a couple more arms assuming everybody they have now plays well.

I have noticed lately that dealers have had to react to online pressure, they charge much less for those common parts that can be easily gotten elsewhere, but still gouge hard on the many bits that are 'dealer only'. i help out select friends with repairs just because..... Cars are undoubtedly far more reliable today with less maintenacne, and they also stop much better.

They are going to double down hard on the taxpayers asses. The carbon tax on consumer energy of all kinds: natural gas to heat my home, electrcity, vehicle fuel is going to sharply increase the cost of living. I cannot change much about heating my home. When it is -40, the furnace will be running and the lights will be on. Certainly I can redcue emissions, but only so much in a dark and cold place. The government will have to compensate the energy companies for another major cost, by legislating the abandonment of their assets. I'll pay for that too. A little bit of the increased revenue from all this tax will go into subsidizing a switch to very costly alternative energy, which will (like Ontario and other places) result in higher hydro bills for all and sundry. Of copurse, the combo of increased royalties, higher taxes and big hydro costs will mean industry will either move entirely or redcue perations in AB to the miniumum, loss of jobs follows and anybody left here will have to chip in more. All in all, a cheery picture ahead. -
Fair enough. We base our decisions first on persoanl experience. Your experience with GM has been to reinforce your buying habits. Mine has been the exact opposite. Never again, although the very worst vehicle(in terms of value) I have ever owned was a Ford Taurus, circa mid 90s. I have owned my own cars for about forty years now, starting with an old VW Beetle bough a month before I could get a drivers license. I graduated to a series of derelicts which forced me to become intimately acquainted with wrecking yards and tools. I still have the tool addiction but I'm much more particular about where I spend my auto budget.

Ah, Ye Olde Cherrypick. Are you saying we can ignore Part 1 entirely? Or just the parts about the rule of law and the supremacy of God? -
wouldn't know, I've had Hondas, a couple Nissans , and a Subarus. Maybe just lucky, but no problems of note with any of them and we put on a ton of kms. The Sunaru was a bit hard on gas with the full time all wheel drive My neighbour has a driveway full of GM and Chev, 3 of them total and none more than 5 years old. I've given him a ride twice to his dealer to pick up repaired vehicles this fall because none were drivable and not surprisingly the dealer shuttle was really busy, too busy to get him. His new Silverado has been in the shop for 3 months out of the 14 he has owned it with engine electric problems, a $50k truck. The funny thing is that he got the truck when his older Caddy had engine electric problems they couldn't fix at the dealer despite a bill for nearly $2k. So he bought the Silverado. Loyalty is a beautiful thing I cannot afford.
-
That's great. I guess I'll never know how wonderful their service is, because I will never own a GM product again. I've wasted far too much time and money fixing them. When I was young I drove domestic beaters because that was all I could afford. I cannot afford a GM now that I have the ability to buy anything I want. I went Japanese long ago purely over quality of the product, a value-for-money/total cost of operation decision. I agree about Canadian Tire. But you present them as the only alternative to the dealer, when they clearly are not. The rare times I've had outside work done, it is done at an excellent local shop.
-
Why? Do you have too much money and need to dispose of some? I never return to the dealer except to get warranty repairs or recalls, or at least that is the theory. The last two new vehicles our family has bought are both Hondas, with a total of almost 400k kilometers total on the two. The car has had one recall(for a piece of apparently faulty window trim) and no warranty work required. The truck had had zero on both counts. All maintenance work is done on or ahead of schedule, 95% by myself, and records are kept.

Some pretty big ERAs in their starters.....and a couple of retreads in Happ and Chavez. It is a risky rotation, for sure. Happ might make the rotation? I don't think the Jays would spend $36 million unless he was an integral part of it. I'd put him at #3, behind Stroman and Estrada. And they really needed a lefty. With an unchnaged offence, if the Jays can get average season out of all their starters they might be all right. But they need a couple more arms in their bullpen, and don't have any or much money left.

I have absolutely no expectations of Trudeau or his program, since it will likely be a bigger and far more costly version of Katimavik, one of his pets. I expect , as usual, to add my tax money and see no tangible return whatsoever.

Yes, you are one of many Canadians who incorrectly believe this. From the actual text of the Charter/Constitution, Part 1 first sentence: That sounds to me like Godbothering is far from separate. -
A Plan to End the War in Syria?
overthere replied to WestCoastRunner's topic in The Rest of the World
I did read it. And stand by what I said. because I understand the relative positions of Assad and Putin. Assad has virtually no game left, except what is assigned to him , largely by Russia. One of the big problems in Syria(aside from the millions of citizens who have left and a monster civil war) is that their is no clear successor to Assad. All parties know that Assad cannot and will not be part of any election, 18 months gives time for the transition. One thing for sure, whomever has the puppet strings attached to their back will know their masters voice. And Russia will undoubtedly be one of them. -
They stay in business because many.many people think that you are required to have service work done at the dealership to maintain your warranty. Dealers often don't make a lot of money on selling vehciles, they do make plenty of money on two things: service work and financing. Ever notice when you are negotiating for a vehicle they are always asking how you plan to pay for it? That is because they know that lending you money is big time cash for them. I replaced a regulator for my son last summer, on a Camry. The part was $280 from Toyota, $65 on the Internet including shipping, about $90 from NAPA. It is almost certain all three otpions are the exact same part from the exact same factory, only the box is different. They also tout 'GM technicians'. In fact, their regular service work is often done by far less qualified pimply 17 year olds, same as at Mr Lube. Thats why the oil change at GM costs a bit more than Mr Lube... they want you in the place and your car on their rack, where can point out the extra work you really need to get home alive.....And they want you trained in the habit of coming there for everything. "airing of the grievances". Save your breath, they don't care and know you are already gone as a customer if you just noticed just how large your bill has become for the same work.. Case in point: a major scheduled service on a Honda runs $450, before they discover anything 'extra and urgent'. At my local trusted repair shop they charge an hours labour ($110) plus about $50 for parts and fluids for the exact same work. The repair shop owner, an old friend, says it takes about 45 minutes to be thorough.

A Plan to End the War in Syria?
overthere replied to WestCoastRunner's topic in The Rest of the World
There will be no peace deal in Syria unless Assad is gone. It is that simple, he cannot be part of it from any perspective. And that is attainable. Russia is his major backer, and they will eventually be the power broker in his departure. But as I said, Russia cannot and will not do that unless they have assurances their needs are met. Putin also needs a bit of time to set the stage for his role, which will be heroic bringer of peace to a part of the Middle East, somethng everybody else and most notably the US has failed at. Russia- and Assad- know that his reign lasts as along as Russia provides support. The purpose of this drama by Putin is to work towards his goal of a return of Russian, or shall we say Soviet, hegemony. They eat it up at home. And do you think the destrcution of cities and death of civilians furthers Putins goals? Of course it does. Sadly, much of this is superpower theater. -
Can I ask a question about Cultural Appropriation?
overthere replied to a topic in Moral & Ethical Issues
No, that is not the meaning of the word 'squaw', now or ever. http://www.nativeweb.org/pages/legal/squaw.html I think you are practicing cultural misappropriation by adopting/propagating this fallacy as fact to suit your victim agenda. Shame. -

Ah yes, the classic populist bullshit, yearning yearning to return to an America sorry Canada that never actually existed. An old meme is " we used to be be peacekeepers, now we are in wars". Hello, you cannot keep a peace unless the folks involved wantr to be kept that way. For example, if you're looking for one,. our allies- France in particular- think he is a fool and a coward for sticking to his plan to remove the jets from Syria. The pressure on Junior just went up a notch as the UK now plans to join the fight, instead of fleeing at precisely the wrong moment as Canada is doing. Cowardice under fire is not a Canadian value. Standing by our friends in time of their need is though. -
You can not believe me too. The Feds: RCMP, DND and all government entities are 'self-insured' which means they don't have any in the usual sense. They consider themselves a level above and exempt from strict provincial laws about carrying insurance. They do have provincial vehicle registration and license plates on most vehicles.
-
That is not true about Alberta, you have 90 days to transfer your insurance to your new province or new insurer if you change insurers, though there is no need to transfer if you move to a province with private insurance where your company operates. He is blowing smoke up your ass.

it is bread and circuses for Wynne. "Hey Katherine, how about that $300 billion in debt?" Yes, but weed matters" -

I am deeply, deeply offended when I attend a rodeo in Alberta and see all the First Nations people wearing cowboy hats. Do you feel another emotion would be more appropriate?
