I watched it a bunch of times and have concluded that if Bautista had not given a wee tug on the fielders foot on the way by, it would have been an easy double play. Bautista did slide slightly on the infield side of the base which is OK, and he did reach out for the ankle, which is not OK under the new rule. The guy didn't step on his hand or trip over it, Bautista reached out and it threw his balance off enough to make a bad throw. I really hope the Jays come out for todays game in dresses as threatened. Yes, it is...... Having coached high performance baseball, players are taught to keep their arms close to their center for two reason. First, it allows you to 'pop up' from the slide, which matters if the ball goes by, you can advance because you are on your feet already. The second reason is that extended limbs mean broken fingers. It is why coaches grit their teeth on those arms extended, face first slides. Looks great on TV, not so good when the player takes 8 weeks off for rehab. C'mon, the replay shows he reached out....

Not the best examples, since neither Florida or Arizona has won anything ever, and both are constantly on the verge of folding. Speaking of climate, Edmonton has a glorious summer last year and one of the warmest if not the warmest winter on record. Edmonton had a crappy organization, but not anymore. They have fired absolutely everybody, from managers to coaches to all the scouting staff to locker room attendants. Now the GM(new) will focus on firing players, or trading them wherever possible.

all players are paid in US$. These people are not fools!

A difference last night was the defence. We did get three HRs, but the D bailed us out of some awkward situations.

What was the last movie you watched?
overthere replied to Moonlight Graham's topic in Arts and Culture
yes, of course. -
Why? Canada is not in recession.

Taxing all home sales would crush the residential construction industry, as far fewer people would move. Moving is bad enough, also facing a huge tax bill would be crippling. Think also of the effect on job mobility. There is not much wrong with current taxation with flipping except enforcement. CRA does not have a specific time limit, but taxes are payable if any pricinpal residence anytime is sold with the intent of profit. If you are a flipper, you should pay.

If I was to say I hated plumbers, a group identifiable by both smell and prominent ass crack, would the police be at my door?

No, Stalin and Mao just loved every creative person they encountered. -
The OIlers haven't gone from bad to worse, they have gone from worst to worster. Chiarelli will blow it up this summer. Eberle and Yakupov gone for sure, Hall and Nugent Hopkins are also possibles for the chop.

Too bad they cannot sign Encarnacion now, he should get around 324 RBIs this year. Good start for the Jays in a park where hey have real trouble winning.
-
Perhaps. People like Brown, the CBC, The Toronto Star, the Crown and the cops and many others need to be a bit more circumspect in their allegations now. They are certainly not 'in the clear ' yet either, there may be a lot more money changing hands over this business. He just 'mentioned ' there is another major trial in 8 weeks from now? Does the Crown or Ghomeshi know that too? Any charges laid? Or just the usual Internet wankery? Hmmmm?

Western alienation does not exist
overthere replied to overthere's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
Are you hoping Mr Trudeau will either redraw those maps or reduce the power of the provinces and move it to Ottawa? -
Western alienation does not exist
overthere replied to overthere's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
Brad Wall has been bitching, and ain't a happy camper Christie Clark has not been cooperative in national issues., such as resource development unless it is specifically in BC. Just wait until every LNG plant flops and see the reaction then to Ottawa. Manitoba, not that is ever matters, is about to change governments. Notley is at around 20% approval rating. So no, the Provinces Formerly Known as The West are not all sunshine and lollipops, no matter how many times you and yer pals click your heels and scream Sunny Ways 2016! -
You don't seem to get the essence of pro sports. The league doesn't care what the Leafs do on the ice, it is how they do at the bank that matters to the NHL. And the Leafs do well at the bank.

Western alienation does not exist
overthere replied to overthere's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
No, it is increasing .Tell your theory to BC (an energetic newcomer to the fray), AB/SK who are not loving Ottawa(never been much love returned, but now it is escalating), Ontario has a wonderful new pal that will fulfill all their sugarplumdreams(at the expense of others) and Quebec which is feeling its oats more than it has for at least ten years. The Maritimes voted as a bloc and have expectations. Every gathering of premiers will escalate the tension..... The level of satisfaction by new and old players is related directly to the delivery of gravy. Assuming that even Trudeau has some limit to how much he will borrow to delver that fabled chicken to very pot, there will be more winners and more losers than ever before. Either brings resentment. Sooner rather than later taxpayers realize that they are simply begging to get back their won money. Oh-oh. -
Are any of the Candian teams losing money? I don't think Toronto is alone in their owners cashing in while sucking hard. Admittedly, they are league leaders due to longevity.
-
Why? Because 'The West' does not exist in 2016, not in any traditional format. Canada has become a bunch of competing regions, as opposed to a federation of generally cooperating provinces. Is it recoverable? I doubt it.

Is it not time to get public service unions out of politics?
overthere replied to Argus's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
It won't be long before Trudeau eliminates any significant contributions from unions and coporsations to federal , and tries to close the numerous backdoors via poltical action groups. Oh, of cpourse that will be accompanid by legislation to force taxpayers to replace every penny of those election contributions, and more. Like it was before Harper cut off the piggies at the trough. The 'radical initiative' will be packaged as part of the Liberals 'investment in democratic change', and the centerpiece of that will be the introduction of ranked ballots. Between that and 100% public election funding for national political parties, He'll have achieved His goal of numerous Liberal majorities. It is a huge priority for Trudeau, this kind of scam has to be done earlier before the broken promises and failures start to accumulate and the scorecard gets uncomfortably linked to a ballot. -
That is pretty funny- a team with so much pitching depth has four(4) starters? And Barney is a weak fielder?. He won a Gold Glove a few years ago. Average hitter, but good enough. One clear weakness is Thole as backup catcher. He will have to play at least 30 games and that is a disadvantage wherever he hits in the lineup.
-
Price plus the return of Stroman I'm not sure why you'd think Hutchson and Chavez are an upgrade from anything. Or why Sanchez is more than a prospect as a starter. Neither Price or Buerhle -proven veteran pitchers with solid records as opposed to persons who are neither-have been replaced, not yet. I hope it goes well and maybe it will.
-
Of course, I did not predict playoff failure. I pointed out a weakness of the team last year, a weakness that unquestionably contributed to their demise. And I questioned their actions in fixing that weakness. Their bullpen looks better. Their starters are still not known, since they have added a couple of journeymen and are counting heaviily on those plughorses and a couple of strong babies. Last year the Jays started the year with a team packed with rookies and it didn't work, unless their .500 record at midseason was 'working'. The starters this year have a large element of hope and luck attached, since Buehrle and Price are gone

Kansas City scored 38 runs in 6 games.
-
Well no. Wins get you a pennant or a playoff spot. I'm not ignoring the 37 wins we need to replicate last years excellent result, I'm the one that pointed it out. Remember? So can the new starting staff do that? Based on past results and assuming Estrada has another career year, and Dickey does not continue to slowly diminish, and that Stroman actually is an ace and can prove it, and that Happ has a great year, and the Unknown #5....... it is certainly not obvious to me.. The Jays did certainly have great offence , but was I the only one here that noticed it is not enough to win championships? In the end, it failed. More accurately, as most often , pitching is mandatory. And that is why I think we could easily give up a player like EE for example to get a starter. We don't need four cleanup hitters But that window may be closing fast already.

And this is REALLY why Keystone XL was cancelled....
overthere replied to overthere's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
Yes. Of course. When did I ever deny it? Keystone- all of it- ends up pouring oil into the Gulf to be sold offshore. I doubt much will get to Asia from that end though, since unless Mexico has vanished it is exceeding hard to get anything bigger than a Panamax tanker through the Canal. But none of it will be Canadian oil, all American. The point of all this is to leave it in the ground, right? While your hero Obama was crying environmental issues, he was working hard on behalf of his country to ensure that local competition was severely hobbled. And your other icon pops down to DC for a pat on the head after dinner for being such a good sport about it. Nothing has changed in the international oil exports market, except that our own government is working hard to ensure we are not part of it. Trudeau has done nothing except erect obstacles and delays to the process of getting the product to tidewater. But what is a few hundred billion in future foreign exchange to a diverse and resourceful country in 2016? I'm sure there will be plenty of doublespeak and platitudes to go around tomorrow, and not so much in the way of actual numbers that add up.. I fully expect the usual cheerleaders here to be in full bray mode.
