http://news.nationalpost.com/full-comment/andrew-coyne-still-confused-about-the-new-non-partisan-senate-heres-a-quick-refresher Now that is the kind of bold transparency we can all get behind. I had been wondering how Trudeau planned to ram through his 'Electoral Reform' initiative which as we all know will be a Ranked Ballot system. I thought that he'd have a stumbling block with the Senate, but this will fix all that trifling issue. I'm willing to bet that the Liberal non partisan senators appointed by the Liberal non partisan appointment committee to vote for Trudeau Jr whatever is put in front of them will carefully consider all the legislative options.

http://business.financialpost.com/news/energy/royal-dutch-shell-plc-casts-fresh-doubt-on-b-c-lng-project-due-to-funding?__lsa=341f-105c Royal Dutch Shell Plc. has cast doubts its liquefied natural gas export project in British Columbia will secure a final investment decision (FID) by the end of this year, further dashing the province ’s hopes of shipping LNG by 2020. Shell’s LNG Canada in Kitimat is competing for funding dollars with two other company LNG projects, both in the United States, as well as with a chemicals plant in Pennsylvania, within the next 12 months, chief financial officer Simon Henry told investors during a conference call Wednesday. “It’s highly unlikely that more than I would say two, maybe only one,… will actually go ahead in that timeframe,” Henry said. “…The chemicals plant is probably the first one because of the timing of certain commitments that are already in place.” Is it really funding that prevents anybody from investing? Oversupply? Or is it the generally hostile overall investment environment in Canada?. The US has one LNG export plant running in the Gulf, two ready to build in Louisiana and one in Texas. They don't seem to be bothered much by funding issues or oversupply. So what can be the cause of no LNG plants for Canada?

No, they did not last year- and when the crunch came and when they faced excellent pitching and nobody got the big timely hits- they lost. Sometimes your #3,4,5 hitters have to take one for the team -and create a run . We have yet another example in the early season of what happens when you insist on relying on the long ball. Winners don't do that, they use all their options. Until they address that, they aren't winning a championship. Until they address their bullpen, they aren';t contending for a championship. Revere for Storen is starting to look like a very bad deal, if only because Revere was a guy who made it happen on the bases..

I am not a Notley fan, but IMO the provincial response to date has been very good. The evidence that they did their main role well and properly? When the fire was 'licking' the city, there have been no know casualties. And so far, the entire city has not burned to the ground. The only political assholery I've seen has been Ralph Goodale, who has spent hours in front of the cameras patting himself on the back about the role of the federal government so far. In reality, the feds have had very little involvement in managing and directing the actual situation. You'd never know it from Goodales grandstanding and puffery.

No the Army cannot. They have no equipment, no training and in a fire of this ferocity would end up as blackened corpses in short order. Very little of area around Ft Mac, or in NE AB in general, has trees large enough to log, and clear cuts are not done.
-
Their problems are much deeper than just offence. I'm sure you've noticed that their bullpen is just brutal in general. Sanchez is now getting hit very hard. Maybe he should go back to the pen. The Jays urgently need somebody anybody there since Storen, Cecil, Chavez, Floyd and... have I missed anybody?... have pretty much sucked. But they have another problem and it is big and enduring. They cannot make runs. They don't even try. They continue to play Cito Gaston style: try to get a couple guys on base, then hit a three run homer. It became a problem last year, when Kansas City showed them there is more than one way to win, that speed and aggression score runs. The Jays just don't bunt, hit and run, steal bases and worst of all they just plain refuse to try to advance runners. The worst offenders are the heart of their lineup. Everybody is trying to hit a homer, when what they must do is advance a runner into scoring position. Last year we saw KC 3rd and 4th and 5th guys doing those things, and winning. Gibbons says 'the hitting will come'. What I hear is that 'we are going to lose games needlessly while he waits for that to happen'.

I can accept that you are ignorant of the reality of large fires. I am not. The scope and ferocity and speed of the flames is fearsome, primal and essentially unstoppable. I have seen many big ones near places I have lived in the North, and they have this in common: once the fire is established, the very best humans can do is try to protect high priority structures. The emphasis in that sentence is 'try'. The best hope to stop the fire is rain and a lot of it. The next best is for wind shifts that turn the fire back on itself, so it has no fuel. Beyond that, the crews deployed are not fighting the fire itself, they haven't been for days. The 'structural ' firefighters are fighting building blazes. The 'wildfire' crews are working the fringes of the town, trying to keep the wildfire from entering. The main fire itself is just burning, because there is dick they can do about it. ETA: you could bring every water bomber in Canada to bear on this fire and it would make little difference.

Clinton has said she also opposes the TPP. Ah The Golden Years... tax and spend, wage and price controls....we were all winners then...
-
It has overall been a great thing for Canada. Clinton is also not a fan of NAFTA. Looks like Big Daddy is moving on to some new favored nations, and we can expect they'll take some or all of their branch plants home with them. Luckily we are now diverse and resourceful, so that gigantic festering hole in our economy will be easily replaced.

Not to worry, Alberta wants SFA from you.
-
How much?
-
What I find interesting is that this thread was posted in Local Politics. How droll.

Thanks for acknowledging yourself. How much carbon is being released into the atmosphere right now in this fire- an annual and routine event of course throughout Canada and this fire is one of 32 burning in Alberta today? There are a fair number of people who have lost their job, their home and all their belongings recently. Latest I have heard is that 1600 homes and businesses have suffered some or total damage. Also in the latest count is that the tally of them that hate Waldo is zero. 20,000 expected to be in Edmonton soon, today and in the next couple of days. I have a couple of spare bedrooms available and a lot of food.

I'm not acting like I know what he is going to do. I'm asking: what would motivate him to choose Toronto?
-
Same question. Why would anybody want that- being unable to walk in pubic, unable to have any kind of private life? What would motivate that, since the money is not the answer.

At some point HBO will have to wrap the series up, with or without new books and different directions from George Martin. But when? They have managed to keep many of the core actors so far, but the longer it runs and the more success they have the less likely it becomes they can afford to pay more actors huge sums. Either they finagle a conclusion, or they replace key characters with new/cheap faces and risk alienating viewers. Game of Thrones cannot become The Simpsons or Law and Order.
-
Be afraid of athletes with blood clots. Yep. He can get the monster money from a few teams, all of whom finished higher that Toronto. And let us not forget the horrific media and fan pressure on anybody in TO. What is his motivation for enduring that?
-
Yep, they are so anxious they are having a meeting to pick one in 13 months. It is unseemly, innit?

The Pacers pretty much mopped the floor with the Raptors last night. I didn't like the body language of Lowry and Derozan after the game last night when interviewed. Their mouths were mouthing the usual script, but their bodies said: we are done.

Scheer might be if he had the weight of publicly funded TV network behind him, sucking up at every turn around the world. But alas, he does not.
-
Really, the hilarity never stops. if he wanted privacy, why would there be any media there?
-
It cannot be a reserve, we don't have any money or we would not be borrowing at a $30 billion per annum clip. Maybe it is 'reprofiled for future social infrastructure investment' or 'pretend money', since we are pretending that this govt has not set defence far, far down the priority list. I kind of favour 'pretend money', which will soon enough be how Canadian currency is described once our economy takes an actual dip caused by what passes for fiscal policy and catches the attention of rating agencies and currency traders.

I acknowledge that this is my own 'positive' thread but I must speak out. Why must the aliens in your body have to resort to threats to be released? Why must you oppress them in this manner? I urge you to set them free! They have inalienable rights. And congrats on the good news.

Complete control of the media, and the message. Wasn't there another PM who was harshly criticized for that, now what was his name?

overthere replied to The_Squid's topic in Federal Politics in the United States
Likely because the US has a very different view of the status of citizens. It is not officially multicultural, it is officially unilingual, and sees itself as a melting pot which is reflected in federal govt policy. You are an American first and foremost, a Native American second. Lots of US folks identify themselves as being of a different race or ethnicity, but the hyphen is less important than the here and now. The irony that it applies equally to Natives as it does to immigrants is ignored. The notion of First Nations is complete non starter in America. There is only one nation.
