well in Canada unemployment overall remains around 7% and a university education is cheap here by any measure in terms of return on investment. Except for a couple of places homeowners in Canada have disposable income from housing that much of the G8 envies. I have yet to see how anybody is obliged to buy a house in central Toronto or Vancouver. Elsewhere, housing ranges between cheap and affordable.

Actually when I talk to people about what Trudeau is trying to do with 'electoral reform', I notice that they get very interested. I don't think he or the Liberal Party of Canada wanted that to happen. And why would the status quo have an advantage? Because people are stupid, lethargic, uninformed? Is that what the Liberals think of voters in Canada? And why would you say politics is irrelevant? The last federal election had the highest % turnout in almost 25 years.

PM IN HOT WATER; The Prime Minister apologizes.

Do you think Brosseau should be kicked out of caucus for assaulting Trudeau with her formidable breast? Does Trudeau get paid extra for being a House of Commons bouncer? -

For the protection of the Opposition members and women MPs in particular, the House of Commons Sargeant at Arms needs to post some armed security guards on the floor to keep people from crossing the floor with ill intent. Only that way can intimidation and bullying by front row thugs be prevented, stopping them from jumping on bystanders and not interfering with the nations business. They should also issue portable panic buttons to all members, not just women, to shout an alarm when they are threatened. Parliament Hill is a dangerous place, especially for women in the NDP caucus. First Pacetti and Andrews, now PM Trudeau. When will this institutionalized Liberal brutality toward women end? Imagine, in 2016. -
Why do you think there will be a referendum?

No, that is not true. Canada can legislate all these things, and has done so. The Indian Act, for example, has been changed many times since 1876(not 1867). Some legal relationships are formed by the Constitution Act(s) and they too can be amended. Nope. The Indian Act describes and lists them as 'bands'. Some but not all have chosen to apply to be called and operate as 'First Nations'.

Ontario announces plan to destroy its economy

The payback on anything Mike Holmes does is 'never'. That 'garage' cost perhaps $250,000. I also have a heated garage that cost a fraction of that to build, is heated with a mid efficiency gas heater and costs about $200 per year to heat. If I switched to solar the payback would be in Holmes territory: never. All his tools and much of the materials are supplied free by the companies slowly scrolling by at the end of each episode, and/or prominently featured during the episode. -

So you subscribe to the theory that 'she was asking for it'? Oddly, despite your interpretation, a parliamentary committee has not been formed to examine the behaviour of Brown, Brosseau or Mulcair. Just Trudeau. It is proof that Harper is still in control, the evil bastard. -

Held up by the NDP? I see a crowd of MPs on the floor, and I see Brown stopping to amicably chat with them. No big deal, he can easily walk around the other side if so inclined. Then Trudeau charges in unbidden and unwelcome, pushes that poor woman out of the way, and drags Brown off like a child. His actual conduct, as recorded, is not acceptable for a drama teacher clearing a hallway of unruly children. But A-Ok in the House? And why is your sympathy with Trudeau? Remind us which government failed to meet the deadline that they have known about for months? -

Yet here you rattle, on this very page, about some Sophie thread and the legislation that Trudeau was trying to literally punch through the House and a variety of courts. Are you ashamed when a personal hero acts so disgracefully, assaulting fellow MPs and women? So now it has been referred to a Parliamentary committee-which will no doubt be stacked high with Liberals.....to your applause. Go ahead, cheer the findings of the 'investigation/ into his Honourable actions, the report is already written. -
I did not say nothing matters. I did say that a fire of this scope won't be stopped by buffering. It might be slowed in some cases. Many of the homes that burned in FM were well away from forest fringes. Embers are carried by high winds for kilometers, and house fires started several blocks away fro intact homes, and well within well buffered areas with nothing flammable on the perimeter. I have lived in Northern Canad for much of my adult life, and have seen this rodeo many times. It seems many people are not aware that the big bucks 'fighting fires' rarely has the intention of extinguishing them, at very best they try to influence or redirect them. And that is what occurred in FM, the fire grew so quickly they abandoned the initial attempts- the fire was small when detected and they got on it early. I think they actually did an extraordianry job of coordination between forest fire efforts on the perimeter of FM and structural firefighters to limit the damage to homes. There was never any way to put it out or control it. As of today, neither has been done as the fire still burns and is still a serious threat. Fires of this size create their own weather. I live about 4 hours by road from this fire, and it has been smoky though the smoke is from other fires in the Alberta, not the FM fire. It rained a little bit last night, really the first rain this area has seen since the snow melted. Hopefully it will rain hard for a couple of days, though that is not the forecast.

Where have you travelled (going to travel) open thread
overthere replied to msj's topic in Travel, Leisure and Sports
I thought travel to Tibet was pretty easy now? You cannot drift around easily, but I think access to Lhasa is not so hard. And not so cheap either. I know some people hire a car and driver in India, but I would suggest you not do that unless you feel is is more secure. The cost is marked up a lot from what you can simply hire a car to take you city to city, and you control the itinerary. Another thing is that -oddly- many Indians including drivers have not traveled much outside a narrow area. If you want to get off that track, they know little about where they are or where you want to go. And you are often expected to pay the meal and accomodation costs of your hired driver. Simply hiring a taxi to travel from city eliimniates much of thsese issues. And it is not expensive, perhaps $40 to $50 CDN total to travel for 5 to 8 hours(which may be only 300 to 400kms). A couple of random things: Indian taxi drivers rarely own their own cars. If you pay $40 to $50, the driver will get perhaps $10 at very most of that and more likely $5 for a 10 to 16 hour day.. So, I always tip them because I am a guilty white colonial. Take a piece of rope with you, if you have to tie down luggage to the roof rack, they rarely have a 10' length of light rope. Check the tread on tires before you get in the car- safety things are very random in India. Getting an Indian tourist visa is mandatory and must be done in advance. It is a bit ridiculous overall, and in truth a good introduction to Indian bureaucracy which is very dense and fussy. Message me when you have an itinerary or your departure gets closer. -

I must say I am enjoying how Waldo is desperately trying to shift the focus of this discussion from the Prime Minister of Canada committing an assault in the House of Commons, to the trivialities of legislation delayed a few minutes. -

Look, we have to cut Trudeau some slack. In the heat of the moment he mistook MP Brosseau for Senator Brazeau and instinctively just started swinging. I blame the Speaker for not stepping in and giving Brosseau a mandatory standing eight count. And this is 2016, there is no reason women cannot equally take a sucker punch on the floor of the House as well as any man. Anyway, physical assaults and bullying are a tradition with Liberal PMs. Chretien did it after all. -
True , but I think many people have no concept of the scope of a fire like this and the speed at which it travels. The money spent earlier may have little impact on 'after the fact'. Ever see a fire that is 'crowning', jumping from treetop to treetop? Terrifying. Whistler BC is rumoured to be working hard on cutting a buffer zone around the town to protect it. from wildfires. They expect it to take 20 years or so to complete. And of course it will never be complete, in 20 years they will find they have to start over again with young growth. Clearing brush helps, on the other hand it may not matter at all, since for example the FM fire easily jumped a river at least a km wide. It must have also jumped the Clearwater river valley too.

It is not just 'time of use' rates that the government will use to empty the pockets of helpless citizens. Wait until they introduce demand charges , which have been in place for commerical and industrial for decades. Demand charges billing will insure that you don't get a big bill one month, it makes certain you get a whopper every month regardless of how much you actually used that month. -
Coyne gives a refresher on Trudeaus 'Senate Reform'
overthere replied to overthere's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
No I'm talking about Trudeau, who no doubt regrets impetuously booting out all those handy LIberal Senators from his caucus, followed up by Harper not filling 24 Senate seats with Cons. Harper did not even fill them up with people pretending not to be Cons. Now that does create a problem for Trudeau...... He has to fill them with Liberals, of course. But then he foolishly went and kicked all the Liberal Senators out of his caucus. How is he going to get all that new legislation passed? Now he has to go ahead with this goofy charade of having 'Non Liberals' appointed by Liberals appointees pretending not to pick Liberals who won't be called lIberals but will always vote Liberal, and they too will be appointed by people that are not pretending not to be Liberal. This all sounds more confusing that it is, just remember that Trudeau has to get that deck stacked with his folks and soon, before he tries to ram the 'electoral reform' down our throats. Ok, he doesn't give a rats ass about our throats or what he stuffs into the other end of the digestive tract. But he does want to diddle with getting elected in 2019- and do it in 2017. He just threw some chum in the water with the transgender legsialtion, he wants the Cons to get all shirty about it and deny passage. But so far they have not bitten. If they slowed or stopped it in Senate, he would have his Hitkler-invading-Poland pretext to 'Gee what can I do but just appoint my friends and stop this insolence in the Senate?' moment. He'll have to find another red herring. -

It is a sign of a failed educational system that anybody equates Trump with Harper.
-
Oh, he does not have anything close to the personal courage required to stand in front of Canadians and confirm the purpose of what he is doing since elected on these files. He has to be a bit careful, he has at least four premiers now getting pretty pissed with him: NB, BC, AB and SK. Of course, none of them really matter from his perspective except perhaps BC All it takes is one or two suppliers of the oil that would fill the pipelines to say: looks like they will never get built, see you later. Then Enbridge/Trans Canada, Kinder Morgan etc have no purpose. And after investing years and hundreds of millions in endlessly delayed approval processes, they will do what they have already begun. That is to move their pipeline capital elsewhere. Both Trans Canada and Enbridge have recently made multi billion dollar investments outside Canada, they can see how this is going to end here. Latest move by Trudeau: appoint a panel to do yet another review after the extensive multiyear government mandated NEB review is done. All three of the appointees have backgrounds that would entirely preclude them having any kind of balanced approach.
-
Trudeau does not build pipelines or LNG facilities. Neither does Canada. There are a number of things that Trudeau could do to facilitate the investment of major money in this country to enable the builds. So far, he has done the exact opposite. Oh, I get it, it is a religious experience. You have to have faith.
