Tories aim to cut $1.7B in spending
fellowtraveller replied to Dave_ON's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
"dead"? The strongest economies in the world all make things: China, Japan,Germany, even the US. Emgering giants like India and Korea too. The cant that service or financial based economies are our future is nonsense. -
English Canada must deal with the BQ
fellowtraveller replied to August1991's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
The OP overrates the interest of Canadians in Quebec. It has waned dramatically in recent years. Fewer peoplke care either way what happens. Quebec benefits most by being front and centre in the national agenda. Oh, and 'benefit' in this sense means Quebec has been very deft in getting a disproportionate chunk of the national pie. Does the Bloc further or hinder getting that extra share? I think they used to be of use, but not lately. Quebec voters have long been the most pragmatic of citizens, tending to vote in ways that enhance their provincial ambitions. Prior to the Bloc, they often voted en masse for one of the mainstream parties and thereby gained influence at Cabinet. The deathknell of the Bloc will come when a party , any party, finds a way to win a majority govt without Quebec seats. Quebec will abandon the Bloc in a heartbeat when it no longer serves a purpose, a financial purpose. -
Adventureland reminded me a bit of Brick, another strongly hyped teen movie. Adventureland made some Top Ten lists, I just dod not see it as being much better than average. Not trying to threadjack, but a movie just seen which I highly recommend is the French jailhouse epic A Prophet.

It was sarcasm directed at the post immediately before mine. Financing is not an issue for the Coens, which of course gives them nearly complete control over their projects.

Harper has allowed the civil service to expand and has spent like a drunken sailor. Just tell every department to pick where there .5% is coming from, or the PMO will do it for them. Scaring up $1.7 billion in savings should take about 15 minutes. Large spenders like DND and Indian Affairs and Revenue Canada have so far been pretty much beyond any real operational review. There is little doubt that plkenty of easy coin could be shaken from every one of those tree.Health Canada is another example of a plump budget spent for very little purpose. -
Yes, the Coens are desperate for money and hopeful that somebody will pay to see one of their movies.

The Messenger: Ben Foster and Woody Harrelson are two US Army guys with the detail of informing next of kin that their loved ones are dead. It is short on comedy as you'd expect, but does not focus solely on grief, not the grief of the next of kin anyway. It explores the two main characters too. Worth seeing, some fine performances from the two leads and Emily Watson. A Prophet (Un Prophete)- French subtitled jailhouse drama starring nobody you've ever heard of. It is long, but never drags, explores the criminal education of a young man who is not part of any culture or gang, a bad place to be in a tough French jail. Don't see it if film violence disturbs you, otherwise a fine piece of film, an Oscar nomineee last year and well worth watching.

Winnipeg to get new football stadium for Bombers

Really? What do they plan on doing with it in the winter? Is there a dome to gentle those brisk, breezy -40 days? -
I dunno about the Job reference, but it is a Jewish movie. Specifically, it is a retrospective of growing up a Jew in whitest whitebread America, which was what the Coens experienced.

Their punishment will be that they are obliged to remain in the Liberal caucus.

This is not new at all in Ottawa, the civil service at all levels has been dominated by Francphones for a long time. A quick read of any NCC departmental phone book reveals a large majority of French names. Correct, which means many jobs outside Quebec and Ottawa are staffed from Ottawa and Quebec. Time is utterly meaningless to the Public Service Commisssion. Money/cost is meaningless too. The only thing in short supply is common sense.

I wonder how that particular instruction would be writeen up in the OBL Operational Security Manual, issude to his personal protection detail? Section IV, 6.b.3: Kill Our Leader immediately if you feel threatened.

LCBO for sale says Liberals.
fellowtraveller replied to Mr.Canada's topic in Provincial Politics in Canada
Link what you've read then. Alberta did exactly what was described above, kept all the profits, lost much of the significant risk, and has much more choice for the consumers. They'd never go back to the dinosaur days of Ontario style grog dispensing. Keeping what you have is certainly not an economic decision, but an act of political cowardice. -
The problem is far more than just cost per khw, it is that most green sources simply cannot be a significant part of the overall power supply. Our industrial society must have a large and dead reliable supply of power. If you insert a wind farm into the grid as part of primary supply, you must also have an equal amount of generative capacity created from nuclear, coal, natural gas or hydro. There is no escaping this at this time, and more than doubles the capital cost of typical green generation. Other green solutions like tidal or wave power don't have the same issue. The system must be geared to maximum demand, both for generation and transmission. There are no short cuts. We need tech solutioon that address storage of power for wind and solar. When that is resolved, they will be viable and will expand mightily.

Ed Zachary. The Alberta model is not centered around a sale, more around the dissolution of the retail part of the business. The assets are mainly real estate. The liabilities are mainly the employees. The fat profits stay with the wholesale wing, where they have been all along. -
I'm not offended by what she said, since she was not afforded the chance to say it. I am offended by the conduct of the faculty and staff of the U of O, who invited her to speak and then shouted her down. I am really offeneded by Canadians who have such callous disregard for basic and fundamental, Charter guaranteed rights.

Very good questions. I hope Mr Topaz will respond.

ECE II is equivalent to a teaching degree in Manitoba? I do hope you can afford that larger house and second car with those subsidies to your lifestyle. Make sure to wear a 'Daddy' nametag so your well educated 2 year old will know who you are when you pick him up. -
Where else could Quebec and Ontario provincial politicians spout the divisive, insulting nonsense about the oilsands they did at the climate change conference in Copenhagen, then follow it up up shortly after with this display of overwhelming hypocrisy? breathtaking hypocrisy

That is not how it works. The bill we will pay is for Coulter, since she is the complainant. Who gets heard by the Commissions is up to them, not to you. If frivolity and useless persecution were barriers to a complaint, the HRCs would have little to do. How can you not support her, if you believe in free speech? Do you think that the U of Ottawa has the ride to demand she conform to their standards of speech?
-
The HRCs have become our version of public theater. Mostly improv.
