  1. Facts and reality are not Ms Somervilles strong points, she has a strong Pro-Life bias. Not surprsingly, she is awalking talking oxymoron, a 'social scientist' and a dangerous one since she has a salary and a podium. Waht do you base those claims on? 1. That there are a thousand? 2. that every one is viable outside the womb? 3. that every one is not medically necessary?
  2. Skimming channels on cable the other night and came across Taps(1981), starring Gene Hackman and Tim Hutton. Appearing as teenaged supporting actors- Sean Penn and Tom Cruise.
  3. Ben Kingsley as Don in Sexy Beast. The fear just radiates off his former colleagues when they learn that Don is dropping by for a cup of tea.
  4. The one and only question I answer with census takers is 'how many people are resident here?'. Other than that, I provide detailed financial disclosures every year to Revenue Canada, as does every other taxpayer in the house. That is enough. StatsCan sells their demographic info to every business with the money. they simply strip your name and address off, sort by postal code and flog it like a used car salesman. I don't need to and will not be part of that.
  5. What policy did he reverse? I live in Alberta, absolutely nothing has changed in access to abortion. It is easy and free.
  6. Neither and both. My BIL is a specialist, gastroenterologist. His scheduled patients get bumped often by emergencies, sometimes for hours, sometimes for months. But the bane of his existnece is pointless referrals from GPs who won't tell a fussy, hypocondriac patient there is nothing wrong with them, or that farting is normal. It is easier to dump them on a specialist, in the theory that they will believe what the specialist says, which does not happen either. It is not even defensive medicine, which is very popular in the uber-litigious USA. On the personal side, I have seen several family members with serious issues move immeditaely into care, which means somebody less ill gets bumped. And have seen the opposite too. So it goes.
  7. Canada has not had a leader stupid enough to open the abortion debate for decades. It has nothing to do with personal or party opinion on the subject, but more that there are no votes to be gained by change or discussion. The current clamour is simply another media and Iggy driven attempt to gain traction on the Teflon PM, and again it fails.
  8. Dunno about Manitoba, but here 'average wait times' can be very misleading. My experience has been that if your personal situation is urgent, there is no wait time. Of course, every urgent case then bumps back less urgent cases. And yes, even cardiac cases have degrees of urgency and every medical specialist can tell you some are timewasters, GPs practising defensive medicine though never to the extent they do in the US.
  9. ??? Why would you think I did not know of the existence of Chipman or Thomson? Their existence does not mean that Winnipeg gets an NHL franchise transferred from Winnipeg. Havinhg rich people does not mean you get a team. SW Ontario had this rich guy on tap with an NHL size arena in his pocket, he didn't get one either. His name is Balsillie, you may have heard of him. Why does Glendale want the Coyotes to stay? Because paying their losses is cheaper than paying the massive loan on their new building. A new building, by the way, that has no prospect of any major tenant other than the Coyotes. The NHL knows it. Everybody knows that now. Phoenix is one of the few places in North America where every sport team has an independent venue. Without a NHL team there, Glendale has to pay the mortgage entirtely on their own with little revenue. That gives them no leverage with buyers, and they know it and admitted it by guaranteeing $25 million in possible NHL losses there next year. Why does the NHL stay there? Because they do not want the dual embarassment of surrending the market, and having nowhere except dead ends/failed locations like Winnipeg or Quebec to send the failed franchise. Both those are really risky moves for the league. There aren't any others in the USA except perhaps Las Vegas, which is unfortunately both in the middle of a brutal economic downturn and has no suitable building. Meantime, they own the franchise now and also know they have Glendale by the short and curlies. That means the next owner has Glendale by the short and curlies too. That increases the value and saleability of the franchise, but only if it stays in Glendale. What the NHL wants too is to get out of Dodge with their $30 or $40 million in cash intact, which should not be too hard now. Expect a sale soon, and probably to Reinsdorf.
  10. You nearly snuck in a false premise OP, nice try!The false premise of course is that a 'law' is needed at all. No wait, look over here how this law works, no over here this one is better. Administration of abortion in Canada starts from a very different place: that abortion is a medical procedure, therefore no law is required other than would be applied to any medical procedure in Canada: accessible, safe, publicly funded. The decsion is not legal and involves no lawyers or application to the justice system, simply agreement between patient and physician. It is very very hard for Prolifers to challenge that in court, since there is no law to begin with......very frustrating no doubt, but.... too bad. Nice try on the OP.
  11. So typical of Aberta workers, these beavers wood have a chip on their shoulders.....
  12. You guys need a little time to apologize, edit your posts and/or pry your feet out of your mouths? Glendale Arizona city council has agreed unanimously to pay any losses the NHL might incur owning the Coyotes, up to $25 million. That means they stay. I'll explain why if you ask nicely. In the meantime, renew those Moose season tickets. You are dead wrong about that, they will eventually seek a NEW franchise there, somebody will pay the NHL between $200 and $300 million for a NEWS franchise. That is why the NHL won't allow any TRANSFER to SW Ontario, they would then forego a monster chunk of cash. It is also why they rejected Balsillie twice, he wasn't going to pay $200 million for a failed team, then also pay $200 million in transer fees.
  13. Two things: Canada has extradition treaties with many countries, inclduing the US. There is no question he broke US laws not once, but many thousands of times, by Emerys own admission. Second, being present in a country has little bearing on the commission of a crime in that country. He was 'operating' in the US when he attached US mailing labels to little packets of seeds and cashed many thousands of US cheques. Imagine if instead of sending weed, which is illegal he sent some other illegal substance like explosives or anthrax. Would you still have the same opinion?
  14. Obviously, getting money for successful film makers is not an issue. Hollywood translates 'successful' to mean profitable, and since Fargo the Coens have an open chequebook and near complete control of their projects. Woody Allen has made a string of mediocrities for a long time now, movies that have not made money. Even the wildly overarated Vicly Christina Barcelona was a financial flop. He is riding his reputation, and has done so for many years and many movies now. Costner has produced more turkeys than a poultry farm at Thanksgibving, getting backers must be a huge task. Another example of directors gone bad in a financial sense, really bad, is David Lynch. Once he walked on water, now he begs for bucks. Good scripts are secondary to commercial success, getting money, and box office payoff. Evidence? The excrable script of Avatar, which was preceded by the equally crap script from Titanic.
  15. Of course. The NDP know they will never form a govt, so coalitions are their only chance at appearing relevant, however briefly, to Canadians. It is why Layton was so excited about linking up with Dion and Duceppe. It was his personal shot at glory. He failed.
  16. Emery is a capitalist to the core and made millions selling seeds to Americans and shaking his dick at US cops while breaking the law in their country many thousands of times. He got caught, now he pays. The only decent thing this greedy arsehole has done is not take his family and staff to US with him. He'll still have millions when he gets out. His actions in this country have nothing to do with the crimes he has pled guilty to in another country. Do the crime, do the time.
  17. It was laytons one and only hope for getting the NDP across the floor. He must feel wistful for what might have been if he wasn't such a preening, egotistical, self deluding fool. Ignatieff knew the score: if the coalition had taken over governance 3 months after the Tories came very close to a majority, and were turfed out to satisfy the egos of the Three Stooges- the Liberals would have been tarred and feathered and finished in this country. Layton didn't care about any of that, nor did Dyuuceppe and for the same reasons. They are fringe parties with little support and had nothing to lose.
  18. Really? The strain imposed by a dynamic load like wind is much different than a static antenna. You might want to check that out before you bolt all that expensive equipment to the mast.
  19. I do remember the 90s, but I have trouble recalling the Liberals.
  20. Thank you for the succinct and accurate summary of the events. The price the Lib-Dems are asking to form a coalition(aside from Cabinet seats)is to change the electoral process to introduce propotional representation, which would be of immense value to the Lib Dems in the future. No response from the Tories yet. Labour has already indicated they would likely support it if the Lib Dems joined a coalition with them. I also expect that was Laytons prime prerequisite for getting into bed with Dion and Duceppe, it would be the number one demand.
  21. Note that NDP support remains eternally at 15%.
  22. Taking over from us? Do you mean Canada? Canada has never been much of an exporter of manufactured goods, so we cannot lose what we never had. Japan, Germany, US have been exporting powerhouses for a long time, and the most affected is the US recently, the others remain major players. You can add Brazil to the list of emerging manufacturing powers. Our future is our past: exporters of raw materials and energy.
  23. In reality, her crimes are insignificant and barely register on the Corrupt-O-Meter. What Harper and crew are doing is sending a message to the caucus about consequences......
  24. I am really hoping it is some leftovers from the Dion regime, it is the only explanation for his penchant for foot-in-mouth disease. The worst explanation is that he is advising himself.... The latest one, involving Madame Jean: linky
  25. stupid sterotyping ......Alberta has no serious separatist movement. They haven't elected a single MLA or MP on a nationalaist program. There is no party at either level that even has strong objections to the provinces ongoing subsidy of the Canadian economy. Try again, redneck.
