  1. Revenue Canada would disagree with you. They deem anyone who gets over X%, and X varies depending on the economy, from a single source, you are not self employed, you are an employee. This was instituted in the early 70's when even people at the manager level would form Joe Smith Inc. and contract Joe Smith to the company he worked for, thus greatly cutting his tax liability. So the Alberta doctor's incomes are in most cases 100% single sourced. QED.
  2. I like Rick Mercer. He skewers everyone.
  3. Where do you live? In Albera, doctors get a paycheque from the Alberta government. Nurses get a paycheque from the Alberta government. Mrs. RNG worked at a cancer center as a dietitian and got a paycheque from the provincial government. Her pension is from the Alberta government. This is private?
  4. It was, and I am surprised I had never heard of this before. The articles I read though suggest it was to keep the socialists from gaining power as much as to help business. And the help was in terms of stemming the large emmigration of workers to America. In our here and now I don't think many workers would want to emmigrate to China.
  5. So in fact neither the Liberals nor the Democrats are liberal. Neither seem to support laize faire.
  6. I don't know if your claim is true or not, but it is irrelevant to the current topic.
  7. Since the advent of call display, I think all polls should be prefaced with the disclaimer, "of 1100 Canadians who can't afford or won't pay for call display and/or don't have a life, 37% think ......................" I know I never answer the phone if I don't recognize the caller. And especially if it says "not available" or whatever the terminology is. I let it go to voice-mail. If it's legit, they leave a message. What say you?
  8. I agree it doesn't work for individuals, but I do think it does for corporations.
  9. I am fiscally conservative, and usually describe myself as a small c conservative. But on a US political forum I visit, they throw the term liberal around a lot. I went to Dictionary.Com, entered "liberal" and was amazed. It basically described me. I'm really confused now.
  10. Thank you, but I would love to see some type of quantification on the wages scale in the graph. If I was a government bureaucrat making 300,oo/yr, that's one thing. If I'm a labourer making $20/hr, I don't think I'd slow down if you got it up to $25/hr.
  11. ready to debate - in friendship

  12. Could you provide a link to any studies showing this?
  13. You, sir, have convinced me to buy Alcan shares.
  14. Which again brings me to advocating either term limits of one term, or longer terms. I know, I know, it would take major constitutional changes and probably effectively impossible to do. But most governments won't do something that is good for the country if it will cost them the next election under the system we have now. Just take a look at the US, where they have effectively a 2 years cycle. None are willing to take the steps necessary to get them out of their economic situation.
  15. You forgot to put the smiley at the end of that post ........... I hope.
  16. As long as we maintain the church/state separation, I see no problem. I don't think there have been any examples of Harper's beliefs affecting his legislation. And I'm still waiting for his black-shirted armed henchmen to be wandering the streets. I strongly disagree with his tough on crime stuff, but that isn't religion inspired, IMHO.
  17. Few people believe it but Shell, Chevron and Suncor all are doing extensive renewable energy research. And this list is not complete.
  18. I've been visiting political forums for years now and this is a new one to me. Any links?
  19. Have any of you taken a serious look at FairTax. I would move to a GST type implementation, but I love it in principle. http://www.fairtax.org/site/PageServer
  20. I too had heard that other than environmental things, the Greens were quite right wing. But the CBC Vote Compass thing had them closest to the NDP, so I'm confused also.
  21. You get it. And not a socialist in the world does. Tax the corporations. What does that do? Raise prices. Low corp tax rates brings more business, brings more jobs, increases the good for all. How simple is that.
  22. I guess we have both expressed our views and will agree to disagree.
  23. What's wrong, you can't stand intelligence and rationality?
  24. You mean that Jack could say "vote for me, my socialist policies made the recession worse, but I gave you a bunch of stuff you can't afford."?
  25. A staff member of my CPC canditate phoned me today and really urged me to vote in the advanced poll. Why? Are they afraid Harper will screw something up? Are they afraid that Layton's support will surge in the coming week? I'm a staunch right winger, and although I don't like a lot of the things Harper has done and is doing, I will still hold my nose and vote conservative. But why the push for me voting early?
