I'm very right wing. But I had the great misfortune of working in both Mexico and Venezuela, both bastions of civil liberties. (Total joke, BTW). That, and some experiences from my youth where friends suffered terribly from corrupt and assholey cops has made me a strong civil liberties defender. Mock all you want but it is a danger. The whole "Patriot Act" shit in the US and other things happening in Canada, supposedly to help the war on terror just make me cringe.

According to the CBC website this morning, he may be the youngest, but he is also the one with the most house of commons experience of the contenders. So a good choice. Deal with it.

Interestingly enough (to me) I will not be impacted at all. All my bills come via e-mail. I pay them via the internet, either to the vendors website or through my bank internet access. My investment statements etc. are via the internet. My CPP and OAP are direct deposit. So who cares?

I strongly agree with a few of Ron Paul's views. But even more strongly suggest many of his positions are grossly over-simplistic. And come on, a few hundreds of thousands of dollars for the CPC is chump change.

A suggestion by someone else a long time ago. A large US aircraft carrier. You could fly the delegates out to the ocean. Safe, easily defended. Problem solved. Better than a battleship, where you would still have to dock to load it and defend the dock against the asshole protesters. I am still trying to figure out what protesters at a G8/G20 meeting expect to accomplish.

I still appreciate the fact that The Senate can slow a bill down. This often allows the media to expose it more when a government tries to fast-track something. The rules regarding Senators and how they are chosen is another matter.

Several utilities in Calgary hired people to deliver monthly bills. This was before the internet became widespread. They were surprised to find out that there is a law in place that makes that illegal. It took business from Canada Post. So back to the way more expensive stamp buying.

I'm not sure of this whole recent Quebec orange tsunami, but the NDP have been historically a big bit more left than "slightly left".
