But what is a country for you ? isnt it people who share a culture a language, media and etc... In canada there is a country within a country. That country is quebec and its in majority french.
-
It seems hard for you to admit that english is a minority in quebec. Quebec population: 7,487,169 French: 6,000,000 English: 600,000 so 81% french, 8% english, 10% others
-
Trudeau's vision has been the beginning of the problem, the conservative at least tryed to find a solution. What quebec receive from the equalization payment represent about 2 billions, now if you take 23% of the federal surplus you find the 2 billions necessary to have a balanced budget. Yeah, right. Boy-oh-boy, I can sure see Bush and his pals bending over backwards to help accomodate the continued proliferation of the French language and culture of Quebec. As for student protests, well, under the American government I imagine they would not be allowed to go quite as far. Remember Kent State University??? Quebec as a state would see the Francophone community reduced to a mere shadow of its former self, and you can bet there would not be any government funding for French-speaking-only schools. But that wouldn't bother the USA. They'd be quite happy with their new sources of hydro, if they managed to get their hands on them. Quebec joining the USA as a state would be cultural suicide of an unprecedented scope. The "we" i used was meant for canada if quebec wouldn't interfere in canadian politics.

yeah, actually after 9 years of power, the people including me were tired of the pq, tired to the point where the ADQ was leading in the poll like 6 month before the election but they started to fall in the poll and people just decided to go with the liberal to get rid of the pq. But jean charest liberal government just happend to be the worst government we have ever seen so if there would be election right now, the pq would win easily. yes we need more than a government change, we need structural change. Murloney tried but failled. The point is that it seems to be the only way to get rid of the status quo. Become sovreign, then there is a pressure to negociate, else the federal government refuse to negociate so in other word we decide to negociate an association, if the federal government don't negociate then it is its business.
-
We are compromising all the time too but i can understand you don't see it. If we wouldn't compromise, canada would be a republic, the country would have a real culture and it would be social democrate and the country would have a real vision for the future. If english canada wouldn't compromise, we would be part of the united states.
-
I understand, but who did that ? who wanted a coast to coast billingual country, the sovregnist ? no its the federalist of the liberal party, the same party we are fighting against. Honestly i don't give a shit about canada's accomodation, i know that the path taken by the liberal can't work, if evryone has to compromise all the time, evryone will hate each others. What we must look at is the structure of the country. We must focus on partnership and win-win deal, where are the win-win deal ? free trade, an international voice, interior security, army, maybe a few service we can share but we must focus on win-win deal.
-
Well right now about 20% want quebec to be fully independant, about 50% want quebec to become sovregn then offer an association deal, about 20% want to stay in canada whatever happen. The problem is that the federal government (Liberal)refuse to end the status quo and rework its structure cause if some province want more centralization, some want less. Right now like many people, i just cant see how we could make a plan with the federal, they just refuse to cooperate, so for many, the easyest way to make a deal would be a winning referendum, then the federal government would have no choice to negociate. No we have the PQ wich is generally a better choice, and for the right wing there is the adq.

Stop whinning about quebecers..... blame the liberal !!! We hate them as much as you guys do and they are 100% responsible of there political mistake... With what we are hearing from gomery comission, i would not be surprised if the bloc get 60% of the vote next election. The federal and provincial liberal have never been so hated in quebec since the 70s... I don't know if you guys are hearing whats happening in quebec cause you should. I can't explain how much ppl are pissed off the provincial liberal, only in education, my cegep is on strike since 4 week, there are 170 000 students on strike right now, the number grow evry day... Click here for pictures of the last protest Once we finish our strike, the teacher are going on strike, they already voted to go on strike.... and after that the service personel (janitor, technicians, etc...) will go on strike prolly.... so my session is ruined cause of the government cut in education. So the situation is explosive, the next provincial election, the liberal will get raped badly, the next federal election, the liberal will get raped badly. If there are not major change in the federal politics and im not talking about buying quebecers cause they will just get more pissed off, im talking about structural change, if nothing change quebecers will take care of it...

here is a text wich explain the situation.

bombardier isnt the only company getting money from the government. Count in alberta oil and ontarian car industry.

Many people fail to understand that the quebecers in the liberal party are not popular at all in quebec. Not only because they are often die hard federalist but also because they are constantly involved in scandals or face ethics problem. The majority of quebecers actually want to get rid of the liberal but at the same time they are not conservative fan so they vote for the bloc. If we take the sponsoship scandals, it totally destroyed the liberal party in quebec while in other provinces, people don't seems to care that much. Ontarian are the one that make sure this party win whatever the rest of the country vote for. Also many people doesnt understand what is the fiscal imbalance quebeckers fight for. It means that the federal government receive too much money for its job and the province doesnt get enough. Thats why the province are in the red (except alberta) while the federal government have billions in surplus. Another thing is that we really doesn't like is when the federal government jump into the province jurdicition, so thats why we will never accept that a federal government decide where the quebec province has to spend its money, thats also why we will always fight to have more money one way or another... because the federal government have too much money for the job he is suppose to deliver.. And thats excacly why i think a confederation would be way better... Because quebeckers, ontarian and the west all have different wishes and trying to govern them all at the same time will end up as a big mess and 3 provinces fighting with each others.
-
you can split quebec in 3 and alberta in 3 but they will still be social democrate and conservative. the problem will not be solved. Either you give the power to the federal government or you give it to the province. Right now its just not clear...
-
The problem reside in the fact that its very hard to accomodate the population with their believe because its too much fragmented. I think the path to democracy come with accomodation, this mean we must decentralize the power so that the west can live their conservative life like they want, ontario can live their liberal life and quebecers their social democrats life. This would be a true democracy... Right now we are all stuck with an ontarian style government because of their high population and with a couple of extremist federalist quebec minister wich took control of the liberal party in the 60's and you can see that extremist group in the gomery commissions. The best way to make evryone happy is to become a confederation instead of a federation. In about 4 years, their will be another referendum in Quebec. When it happend, i hope the canadian will understand its better to have a confederation than a broken country.

I think he is not a good politician. His political vision is ok but he is really bad in selling is idea... This is a good sample, he has a constitutionnal position that could be great but he do not explain it to quebecers. He is the only party that want radical change in healthcare but he doesnt explain it. I have the impression he is not working hard enough or he just dont want to be prime minister. For this reason, the adq won't make it with him but the problem is that at the same time he his the party so if he leave, the party won't make it either :/
-
I think Paul Martin is a conservative but mostly an opportunist... He want to be part of the star wars system, he will say we wont for political purpose but we will by the backdoor. He doesnt like kyoto, but for political purpose we are part of kyoto but don't expect major change... we will just fake to participate... Its the same thing with all other hot issue... he pretend to be liberal but in is head he is a conservative. There is 1 thing i dont like about this budget, the federal is invading the provincial juridiction... Its a vicious strategy, they let the province die with no money to take there place slowly.
-
Im so frustrated againts this government.... The big problem with this party is Jean Charest... I agree that reid and chagnon were very very bad minister and they didnt had what it takes to be a minister but they were just doing what charest told them to do. But the most frustrating thing is he got rid of yves séguin and that is very stupid. Its like if he was playing chess and sacrified its queen to give more place to peon... Im conceirn about why he did this... Maybe he knows that he won't win the next election and he planned is "final solution" for is "réinginérie de l'état" wich is the destruction of the quebec's duck tape social and economic structure to instore chaos. And about séguin going with the pq, well i think he made it really clear that he believe in a new form of federalism but if the liberal doesn't make a move to solve the federations problem, he would'nt hesitate to go in the sovregnist camp.

there are many problem with our electoral system, like august1991 say, the conservative doesnt get seats in quebec, the liberal doesnt get many seat in the west, and the bloc is only in quebec. It is partly because of quebec if the current system doesnt work, its because a liberal for quebecers doesnt only mean a liberal, it also means a centrist federalist party. But since many dont vote for them and are not conservative or ndp fan, they vote for the bloc. The 2nd problem is that the west value and the east value are different just like we can see in usa. Its not sufficient, the liberal will continue to be elected all the time even if the west and half of quebec vote against. They best way to solve the problem is to become a true confederation.

I think we can agree that they have a different kind of power and both can be a threat. In fact, they are playing a different role but they are the same threat. Its just like we have seen in the sponsorship scandal. Private company give money to the party in power and the government take our money to pay back that company or for laws and stuff like that. I don't want to give my credit card to wal mart but soon i wont have the choice since all other store that can't compete with them because the laws arent strict enough will disapear. In fact its already happening... wal mart have the monopoly of many goods in my city. All im saying is we cant live in a completly free market if we still want to be free because if all the company eat each others and merge and etc... Its already becoming a mafia like market... whats happening with oil will soon happen to other goods, and it will weaken the economy, especially the occidental one. Its exaclty like in real life, if there are no rule to keep our society from falling appart, well it wouldnt work well.

Lol August1991, you trust the most rich man in the world, bill gate, but you dont trust politicians ? I dont mean you should trust evry politician, but i think you shouldnt trust evry "top 10 of rich ppl".
-
Bill gate company is a good sample of power used againts others. Microsoft is a very agressive company that use its power to crush its competitor. That company is constantly in court for antitrust case. here is 1 sample: SAN FRANCISCO - Sun Microsystems has filed a private federal antitrust lawsuit against Microsoft, accusing the company of harming competition by using its monopoly in the market for PC operating systems to undermine the success of Sun's Java technology, the company said Friday. http://www.infoworld.com/articles/hn/xml/0...0308hnsun2.html We can also think about the endless war microsoft had with netscape. They dont care to lose in court as long as they keep their monopoly. So microsoft is a good sample of what can happend with power but has nothing to do with the minimum wage subject, its another problem.
