Americans insult Canadians
ft.niagara replied to August1991's topic in Canada / United States Relations
I think in the Moslim world, what would be nice, is out of control. Logic is out the window. Arabs are like pigs in that they will not go in a direction they do not want to go. There is no logic that a muslim fought in Iraq=terrorist fought on the streets in US. Yes there is a sizable population here, but Detroit is not the war zone Iraq is, yet. If you do not like that analogy, then how about the analogy to Taiwan, and South Korea. Should Americans die for Taiwan or South Korea? Why is it that the Jewish majority does not support Bush or the Republicans? There seems to be more alignment of interests, IMO. BTW, you should listen to streaming internet talk radio from Israel. It is to the right of Bush. In Israel, some Palestinian woman won a scholarship for a PHD in Israel, but she can not attend because communication has shut down. -
The Christian right is a demeaning buzz word. It is next to redneck in the left lexacon. The Christian churches got actively involved in the elections of the 90s with great success. It is no different than black churches being involved in elections, but there is no comparable buzz word for their activity.

More likely, the reason is IF you WERE an American, you would vote Democrat.

Why are you so upset? You are a Canadian.

Why? It is a close issue. Because the Republicans are presently in control? Because the Republicans are inherently dishonest? Because the Democrats won't graciously loose? -

I can not wait for the election. As far as rigged elections, the only successfully rigged Presidental election was won by Kennedy, a Democrat. -

I am a professional like you, and I do know many Jewish people. I am not antiJewish, I am proUS. There is quick tendency to confuse the two. You might notice that the Jewish people historically vote Democrat, and most are antiBush (Barbara S). Are THEY both Jewish and antiJewish. I do not agree that Israel/US interest always parallel. I am a Republican, even though I can not vote in the Democratic primary, the dominant party here. I am antiIraq war because I do not see how it benefits the US. To fight the terrorists in Iraq, makes no more sense than fight the communists in Viet Nam. They still have to get in some boats or planes and fly or ride here. The Atlantic Ocean does provide some advantage. All we are giving them is targets, and its their civil war anyway. I sense your frustration in the 'civilized world' in not supporting the Iraq War, and I do also. I think their lack of support of the Iraq War also parallels exactly their lack of support of Israel. The US is doing all the heavy lifting. It occured to me there is some similarity between New Orleans and Israel. New Orleans is a diked city, and Israel is a diked nation. New Orleans is surrounded by the Gulf of Mexico, and Israel is surrounded by the Moslim world. For the US government to guarantee homeownership below sea level makes no more sense than guaranteeing Israel's safety. It might be an eventual impossibility. The European nations and Canada should be more involved in Israel's safety guarantee, but not much interest exists really. -

jbg, you are a Democrat but you seem to favor Republican policy on engagement. If so, then why are you a Democrat? In another area about the CBC it indicates you are a Jewish lawyer, near NYC, and that Jewish issues and Israel are of great interest to you. Could it be that you are confusing what is best for Israel with what is best for America? I do not think that America should be Israel's sole guarantee of existance, anymore than it should guarantee Taiwan, or South Korea. I think that Israel's guarantee should come from those nations in Europe which were responsable for any dislocation, not the US. -

Obviously the fake passports worked. Those people got out of Iran on Canada's dime. They arrived safely and happily home. If the passports didn't work, those people would have been killed in Iran. Yah, Regan weren't no pussy... just an actor. What does any of this have to do with Air traffic controllers? Those Americans were held under state arrest. There were guards. They had to get past the guards. Did they just show those guards their new passports, and those guards were fooled? The hostages were in the air the moment AFTER Carter left office. The Iranians knew that if they did not by whatever deal, that an ultimatum such as was given the air traffic controllers would follow. Reagan was not only an effective President, he was a beloved one also. His state funeral was the largest since Kennedy. -
You find that funny? HOW can anyone find abuse of a courtesy FUNNY? Perhaps it is a political persuasion thing?

Which counts? Being arab? Being muslim? I'll bet you are not Irish. What did you think of galloway, BTW? -
Yes it is drama with a profit motive. The boundries of propriety is the issue or nonissue. Lucile Ball was the first to be seen pregnant on TV. The streaching of propriety has been ongoing for fifty years or more. The latest big one was gay marriage, before that legalized abortion. In I someways I admire Islim because there are strict taboos against the streaching of propriety. I guess when Islim takes over, they will really have a lot of butt to kick.
-
Perhaps Islim being a younger religion has not evolved as yet to coexist in a secular western world. The problem is it might take another five hundred years to do so. If someone made a movie critical of Islim or a high leader's assassination, they would have to go into hiding like Salmon Rushtie. Not much fun in that.

You in Canada have something of the same problems of Iraq. Different languages, resources, and geographies. I guess the religion is not an issue as it is in Iraq, But in an attempt to make it fair to all, you make it fair to none. In Iraq, separation may be the final solution, as it is in Canada.

1. How could you return control of something they never had control of to begin with. 2. If a treaty was abrogated, how is it that Panama now controls it? 3. Carter was, is, and will always be a pussy. 4. I doubt fake passports fooled anyone, but thanks for them. 5. If the hostages were not returned, Reagan would have declared war, which is something which Carter should have done. Reagan did the unthinkable with the air traffic controllers: he fired them. He gave them a deadline, problem solved. Sometimes taking a tough stand is hard, but works. -

Yes especially when you can't stand up to him or back up your arguments. KillJoy has a mania. He has to get the last word. Watch everyone, he will post behind me. -
Yes this very second. Why should American soldiers die for someone else's civil war? They did not sign on for that. The oath to defend and protect the constitution of the US is just that. The oath goes both ways, as in like a contract. They did not sign on to defend and protect the constitution of Iraq.

Higgly reminds me of galloway on another board. Both are Irish names, but both are truly probably arab muslims. http://www.bearpit.net/index.php?showtopic...amp;#entry97467 "There is no evidence "OBL" had anything to do with 9/11..... There is more evidence pointing to people who actually have a motive and a capability to perform a brazen, coup-like event, that would kick off perpetual wars against the muslims for many many years. I have not seen or met a "muslim radical" yet... except for a few who are paraded on TV by the media who, in most cases work for a western intelligence agency as agents and informants or provocateurs.... the most recent Canadian "terror plot" is a key example of these hoaxes meant to sow fear and hatred. Salmon Rushtie is a low life..... and again, like others is used to instigate trouble in the world. As far as the bad bad Taliban "blowing up the Buddha rocks".... any christian fundamentalist in the bible belt would have done the same if they had the opportunity... so don't give me that B.S that the did something so bad....>!" PS, I love the part about the 'Bubba Rocks'. Also, I love the 'maroon'. It doesn't translate well from arabic. -
Should the United States send 20,000 more troops to stabilize Iraq as John McCain suggests? http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/15446757/ A common complaint of Rumsfield was that he did not send ENOUGH toops. Then there are those who say we should withdraw troops. I am of the second thought. WITHDRAW, and let the chip fall where they may. McCain is far from a military genius, last in class at Annapolis. He must have made a thorn in side prisoner, because he is a thorn in side Senator.

And do you remember exactly who got your country out of that quagmire? Who exactly got those hostages out of Iran? Hmmmm? Gave away the Panama Canal!? The Panama Canal is not in the US. Its in Panama and so are its rightful owners. Duh. Duh. No, who got them out? Canada? And what does it matter anyway. The thread was a Bush bashing one with him being the worst President. I think Carter was much worse. My opinion, and that was the question, your opinion. As far as Panama Canal, apparently you know nothing about it. Panama was part of Columbia, and separated in order to build it. There was a deal. The deal was the US build it, IN RETURN, the US was granted control of it (ten mile path) FOR EVER. This seems to be common problem with some left posters. They are experts in Canadian history, and US history as well. Hmmm, in fact they are just plain know it alls. -

There will hopefully always be fundamental views of each religion, christian, jewish, muslim. The only problem is that there are very few christian or jewish terrorists by comparison to muslims. The unscarved women compared to meat would find no comparison in christian fundamentalism, IMO. -

Thank you for your thoughtful and detailed response. As time permits, I will download the CORAF and read it. I remember on this forum a topic about the French affirmative action issue was discussed. One of the posters was a civil servant from Ottawa. He described a language test which must be taken and passed before one can be hired for a job. In order to obtain a high enough grade in French is difficult for an English speaking person, he acknowledged. It was noted that most of the new hires were Frankophones into the federal (Canadian) system. Sometimes laws have long lasting nonintended results. It is as though someone is given the authority to experiment with people's lives. In the US, there is this concept of affirmative action with the intent to redress wrongs of slavery. It is basicly reversal discrimination, and open ended to boot. Racism is wrong in what ever the flavor. -

Not embarrassed at all. I think Carter's Presidency was the lowest point in my memory. Iran held hostages for about a year. Carter gave away the Panama Canal. We had Billy Beer being sold in the stores, and Miss Lillian and Billy were in the news. Gold went to 800 dollars, and the gas at the pumps dried up. That has not happened under Bush. Lyndon Johnson might be another bad example of a President. He got us deeper into VN. Then Kennedy got us there in the first place. Nixon tried to get Peace With Honor. Obviously, that did not happen. Watergate was only an offshoot of the VietNam war. The breakin was looking for leaks. In balance, the worse Presidents post Eisenhower would be democrats. One thing I hate about the Democrats is their appointing judges which wish to MAKE law instead of interpreting it. In that way Bush has made a difference FAR beyond his next two, and past six years in his appointments of young judges to the Supreme Court. Another thing I dislike is the policy of affirmative action which is just reverse racism, or politically correct racism. Blacks are no longer the largest minority, and someday, this vestage will have to disappear.
