  1. 20,000 on the waiting list. Damn. They could have built a 35,000 seater and still had trouble keeping up with demand.
  2. That's an interesting premise. People do need a clearer explanation as to what it is they are or are not agreeing to. The Charlottetown referendum was anything but clear. People voted against it for opposite reasons, each thinking it "gave too much" to the other.
  3. Agreed. My son plays both, neither are games for the meek (not as a spectator or a player). It's not just violence for the sake of violence though, regardless of what some commentators might think. There most definitely is a code, and parameters within what type of violence is and is not appropriate. There is a similar requirement to not back away when challenged either. A lot of sports use the cliched metaphors comparing the competition to the field of battle, but hockey and lacrosse personify the concept of going to war more than any others. That one might reach a broader audience by making either sport kinder and gentler is not a good argument, IMO. The rabid fans love these sports because they are so tough. The pansification of these great sports would not be worth the few extra eyeballs. It's not necessarily a given that less violence automatically would mean more fans either. The fastest growing sport in the world right now is nothing but violence. Most of the rule changes they've made to make Mixed Martial Arts more and more mainstream have served to make it more violent, not less. It was far safer back when it was considered a "banned blood sport" than it is now as mainstream entertainment.
  4. Considering that's pretty much the opposite of what I said, I'm not sure why I would need to explain it.
  5. I wasn't a Canucks fan before the playoffs, I don't understand why anyone would expect that I should transform into one just because they are the last Canadian team left playing. There's a lot more to the game than what side of the border their home arena is situated.
  6. If "to the victors go the spoils" is a legitimate claim, an awful lot of injustices would go unchecked. The same logic would certainly make for a much different dynamic with regards to aboriginal land claims over here, that's for sure.
  7. Private companies can bargain and figure out what their true bottom lines are. If they can't afford it, they have the option of shutting down. Governments do not have that luxury, and unions end up just extorting more money from the taxpayers. They know that the longer they hold out, the worse it gets for the government.
  8. Dsitinctions about certificates vs. degrees (or diplomas for that matter) aside, the NDP is admitting that Larose's bio was padded: NDP takes blame for another MP’s false resume It's also not the first time Larose has used the same bio:
  9. I don't see what the problem is. If you want to pick your own senators, then do it. Harper has appointed the available elected senator 100% of the time. In the mean time, all Harper has done is follow the established procedure. Besides, my understanding is that the committee structure can't be changed in session. In order to chair the committees, the absolute majority in the upper house has to be in place before the house sits. If you want the senate to pass laws that reform it, you first have to have a senate that is composed of people open to such reforms. I can't help but think that this outrage is exactly what Harper wants. When he comes forward with Senate reform bills, it's going to be pretty tough for the opposition to object to them now.
  10. Quebec the province is Canada. If the Quebecois wish to leave Canada, I encourage them to hop on a plane. I'm not much of a hawk. I generally have disdain for most wars, and I don't even own any guns. I will, however, take up arms in a heartbeat against anyone who attempts to carve off a piece of this country.
  11. I wonder if Liberals really believed the contempt motion would actually have traction with voters? Most people we met at the doors thought it was just a cheap stunt.
  12. So you think the monarchy is not ascended to though bloodline?
  13. I disagree. His position is consistent: Let those who have their keeps theirs, just let me keep mine too!
  14. So that the person actually in charge is the elected official, rather than someone who was fortunate enough to have been born into the right family.
  15. I think the tradition is important, and I doubt a very large percentage of Canadians would want to completely change our system to eliminate the monarchy altogether. I would like to put it into law that the Monarchy is strictly ceremonial though.
  16. The one page in both french and english, with the code for completing online is the one I got. The online part (courtesy of Lockheed-Martin) didn't make me any more interested in completing it, that's for sure.
  17. You don't think Cuba is socialist?
  18. I've been there twice in the last year, they most certainly DO make that claim. Castro has repeatedly made claims that Cuba is more democratic than the US.
  19. When a country feels the need to insist that they are "Democratic", it usually means that they aren't. It was East Germany that was the Democratic Republic. It's North Korea that is the Democratic Republic. Cuba insists that their system is Democratic Socialism.
  20. $1.40? Must be a specifically regional thing. I just filled up today in Winnipeg for $1.18/litre. Crude is going for $98/barrel though. One should expect gas prices to be rising right now anyway, regardless of the domestic taxes or tariffs, or the transportation issues. As for the OPs comment about the NDP and gas prices: a carbon tax would be added on top of the already rising prices.
  21. On what? Taxes? Between the reduced GST and the various new credits, I'm paying over $3000 a year less than I did five years ago. That doesn't even include the extra $100/mo UCCB I was getting up until this year. Jury Duty? That is really easy to get out of. It really is as simple as telling them you aren't available. I've done it, and I know plenty of others that have as well. When I was called, I was in the middle of a big project with a tight deadline. I honestly did not have time to go, even if I wanted to. I told them the truth, and they told me that was fine.
  22. There is a huge difference. CPC does not enshrine fascism in their constitution, the NDP does enshrine socialism in theirs. CPC does not have a Fascist Caucus, the NDP does have a Socialist Caucus. CPC does not have MPs who are former Nazis, NDP does have Communist Party members as MPs. Calling the CPC fascist is stupid, because it's false. Calling the NDP socialist is perfectly legitimate, because it's a fact that they have promoted themselves.
  23. Rob Ford? WhoGAS? He didn't run in the federal election.
