  1. NAFTA? I was sure the Liberals promised to tear that up - you mean it's still around? They must have cancelled the GST, didn't they?
  2. Perhaps the right to vote and the right to citizenship could be tied together somehow? In Starship Troopers, Heinlein suggested that citizenship should only be available to those who had military service. I don't think that's the answer, although many countries do have compulsory military service, I'm not sure if any tie this to the right to vote. Perhaps public service or community service on a regular basis if you want to maintain your citizenship?
  3. Too bad some other party(s) wouldn't realize this...
  4. Well, I suppose if he didn't want to answer, he could have just pretended not to understand the question. But I think you are right, the media was much less biased this time around than they have been in the past. The Liberal brass rail is starting to look a little tarnished...
  5. I was a member at Costco for years and their 'checks' are a joke. How many shoplifters do you know that put the item they are stealing into their cart, go through the checkout and then out the door? You could easily go into Costco and fill all the secret pockets in your coat with frozen salmon and then walk out the door. As long as you don't have a cart nobody will look at you.
  6. Why not, Toronto already has it's own party.
  7. How do you figure that? http://www.nunatsiaq.com/news/nunavut/81017_1608.html It seems much more likely that it was a backlash at the carbon tax, which would have had a serious effect on the cost of living throughout the north. After all, they can't exactly turn off their furnaces when it's 50 below, and solar doesn't work well when there's no sun most of the year. Food prices would have gone through the roof - everything is shipped in by air.
  8. Interesting, in that case why were a major portion of the revenues from the carbon tax being redirected to benefit those who were not expected to pay their share of it?
  9. In this case there were a total of 6 employees affected and "The first contract raised pay from a minimum of $8.50 to a new minimum of $11.54. The new top rate was $15.25." Therefore, the total additional cost to Walmart would have been in the neighbourhood of $30.00 per day = one oil change. Labour costs had little to do with this decision...
  10. Heh! http://careers.ml.com/index.asp?id=76716_7...008_84574_85835 "Merrill Lynch is experiencing a period of sustained growth across virtually all its businesses around the world. Toronto is an ideal location..."
  11. Perhaps, if enough of you who felt the same had got out and voted - then it would no longer be a 'Liberal' riding. I suspect there are very few ridings in the country where the winning MP garnered over 50% of eligible voters.
  12. Even in banking, cash flow is king.
  13. I'm not sure I understand how that would change anything? Any party with less than 10% of the House would either have virtually no power at all, or have too much power.
  14. If proportional, the Greens would end up with 7% of the seats in the House. How are they any farther ahead than before when it is likely that the other 93% will still vote against them? It seems that what advocates of PR are really hoping for is to get the 'balance of power' so they can then dictate their agenda to the rest of the country. What if someone like the Christian Heritage Party of Canada or the Communist Party of Canada ended up with the balance of power?
  15. I am starting to get frightened now. And none of those smiley's fits. (edit: 'none of those smiley's fit'?)
  16. Why can't they be excluded? I mean, over 93 out of every 100 people REJECTED them. You don't think they are a little off the wall?
  17. I believe that Harper can start his mandate with a very conservative fiscal budget without any trouble. Despite their promises during the campaign, the Liberals actually do understand what is important for our economy - it's just that sometimes they get confused. (Sorry - was that rude?)
  18. I don't agree with his politics, but I do think he was doing it for the right reasons. I don't know if I am happy about a system which requires that kind of financial (or otherwise) risk from someone who is just trying to serve his/her country.
  19. For at least the next year, Harper has free reign. He just has to ride the edge a bit and he will get _almost_ anything he wants through parliament, and whoever cuts him off first (whether it be the Liberals, NDP or Bloc) will get the blame. .
  20. That kinda sucks. I hope the party (or somebody) steps up for him, somehow. If he has been having trouble with donations to this point, it's probably all downhill from here.
  21. Pretty smart idiots, because the green shift is gone.
  22. 4 hours seems about right to me, depending on where you cross. (I used to live in Edmonton...)
  23. If Dion resigns, what happens to the debt he still owes to Elections Canada for the leadership campaign?
  24. But she's so much fun! (not)
  25. Don't overlook the fact that a large percentage of our population does not have internet access and/or does not have a computer - and many have no interest in obtaining either. And judging by many of the posts on this board alone, I have my doubts about an 'engaged constituency' doing anything useful at all...
