Charity -Do you give on a regular basis?
August1991 replied to August1991's topic in Moral & Ethical Issues
Many years ago, I lived in a poor country. I quickly learned that people donate differently. Waiting for a bus once, an older rich woman gave to a male beggar. I gave money to an obviously pregnant woman. The rich woman said to me, "She'll just get pregnant again." -
I have a Visa card. With a 1-800 number. I do not expect to pay taxes for a bunch of Visa guys to have an office. Musk is correct.

Uh, they don't. More to the point: I walked by homeless Canadian citizens in Montreal yesterday. Why should a Consulate person abroad treat any Canadian citizen any diifferently?

The 1910s? Mussolini, Putin, Mao, Hitler? - not the 1930s
August1991 replied to August1991's topic in The Rest of the World
The period of 1914 to 1945 were a disaster in world history. Thirty Years of Death. === We must avoid such disasters. -
Russia/Ukraine War -Where to hold meetings

Geneva, Switzerland? We live in a new world. -
I reckon that this will be a total f* up. The AfP will get 20%. Like the Italina Communists, it will be difficult to exclude them.

Party Leader: Singh, Trudeau Jnr, Carney etc
August1991 posted a topic in Federal Politics in Canada
Clearly, a small group can control the choice of a party's leader. Let's see how a broader group views the choice. -
The US SecGen, Marco Rubio, recently raised the issue of embassies in Washington and Moscow. This is not the 19th century. Trump can phone Putin. === Why are American bureaucrats living in Moscow? Or anywhere abroad? In this world, we do everything online.
-
Disagree. O'Reilly is a good example of what many Americans think. He is clueless about economics, world affairs. But if any foreign embassy wants to know what Americans think, O'Reilly is a good source.

Trump's Tariffs? -Nothing New
August1991 replied to August1991's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
Corrected. The original is much, much better: "Living next to you is in some ways like sleeping with an elephant. No matter how friendly and even-tempered is the beast, if I can call it that, one is affected by every twitch and grunt," https://www.cbc.ca/radio/sunday/the-sunday-edition-june-17-2018-1.4692469/sleeping-with-a-very-cranky-elephant-the-history-of-canada-u-s-tensions-1.4699017 === Imagine a world where politicians use the language, speak in such a way. Now, imagine a world where politicians can fool around in two languages, speak both for fun! Zelensky can do this Putin also. -
If I were a foreigner and wanted to know what Americans think, I would listen to O'Reilly. (I'd get rid of my Embassy except as a travel agency, lobbyist.) If I were an American who wanted to know about the world, foreign affairs, finance, economics - O'Reilly is usually wrong.

Trump's Tariffs? -Nothing New
August1991 replied to August1991's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
Pierre Trudeau famously said: "We are like a mouse in bed with an elephant." === This is how to respond to people like Trump. -

Disagree. Americans are American. We Canadians get along. We cross lines. -

Grain of salt. ==== We are two countries, who get along. In fact, you have a federal union of 50 independent States And we have 10 sovereign provinces. -
If foreigners want to know what Americans think, O'Reilly is a good source.

IMHO, he is knowledgeable about America - slightly right. He knows America. Economics? He is often wrong. World affairs? He has a typical American view..

Humans Living on Mars vs Robots on Venus
August1991 posted a topic in Health, Science and Technology
No human will ever live on Mars. But we can send robots to Venus. 1. Mars has no magnetic shield. For humans, life on Mars is like living in a Microwave Oven. (To be more accurate, two microwave ovens -both with random controls.) 2. On Earth, it is cold at the top of Mount Everest. On Mars, the atmosphere is so thin that if your feet are 20 degrees, your head is well below zero. 3. Life on Earth has evolved for our changing environment. ===== Rather than wasting the time of smart engineers to send a person to Mars, I think we should send robots to Venus and find out what happened there. I reckon Venus can tell us more about life on our own planet Earth. -
Nixon was older and taller. Pearson? Even if he had fought in the Great War. ==== Trudeau Snr did it correct.
