Our Job Losses: Due to Trade and Technology
August1991 replied to August1991's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
Pierre Trudeau was born in 1919. His mother was English-speaking, Scottish Catholic. His father was French-speaking Ambitious. She crossed lines to marry him and Pierre Trudeau became Pierre-Elliot Trudeau. Fair enough. Trudeau (the dad) did not want to paddle to Cuba in the 1930s. He wanted to do it in the 1950s. BTW, I do know that he went to China in the 1950s. I met his accomplice. -
As a Canadian, I largely disagree. Education must be local. (Should the State teach? Dunno.) Civil relations? This is a personal, private matter. If I don't want to get in a taxi cab with a particular person, it is my choice. If a taxi driver doesn't want certain customers, it's his choice. We choose who we marry. Language? The State must communicate to me in my language. Abortion? Death penalty? Dunno. I would leave this local.

Difference: US vs Canada
August1991 replied to August1991's topic in Canada / United States Relations
Americans? We could not wish for better neighbours. And you Americans? You are lucky to have us to the north. -
2% Defense GDP by 2030

Sweden and Finland joined NATO for practical reasons. They are buying American stuff. But 5%? -
1812? They invaded us in 1775 - as part of their revolution. The American soldiers froze and left on 31 December 1775 - they had not been paid. ==== Americans could not hope for better neighbours. And we could not hope for better neighbors.

Trump? Americans are self-absorbed. -
Minorities among Majorites: Pierre Trudeau, Barack Obama

Imagine if Obama had said: "I want to put Negros in their place. And their place is in America.". -
2025 Federal Election: How many Liberal ridings?
August1991 replied to August1991's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
The secret to Canada's success is that ordinary people cross lines. We get along. -
Mearscheimer's view is that a State is like a single person. He views the world as a few persons (gangsters) facing one another. ===== I view the world differently. I see the world as gazillions of people.

2025 Federal Election: How many Liberal ridings?
August1991 replied to August1991's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
And yet, we get along. Canada has never had a civil war. ==== Montreal today is like Lemberg once was - a city where different people live together. -
2025 Federal Election: How many Liberal ridings?
August1991 replied to August1991's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
I disagree. Most of the world votes/chooses/aligns along racial/religious/colour lines. We Canadians have a long history of crossing lines. We get along. -

Why/how did the Great War of 1914 start?
August1991 replied to August1991's topic in The Rest of the World
I frankly believe that it was possible to avoid the cataclysm, horrific diplomatic disaster of Summer 1914. I'm not sure if it was possible to avoid the US Civil War.. -
That is the real poliitic Mearscheimer view. But what if a megalomane/sociopath such as Napoleon/Hitler gets hold of a nuclear weapon? In the 1800s, Napoleon thought that he was changing the world.

Minorities among Majorites: Pierre Trudeau, Barack Obama
August1991 replied to August1991's topic in The Rest of the World
America? Many societies, countries, have minorities - problems of getting along. Europeans fight often. We Canadians get along. -
Trudeau famously said, in English: "I want to put Quebec in its place. And its place is within Canada." Obama famously said: "Well, I say to them tonight, there is not a liberal America and a conservative America — there is the United States of America. There is not a black America and a white America and Latino America and Asian America — there's the United States of America."

Mark Carney = Michael Ignatieff
August1991 replied to August1991's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
Who TF are you? To me, Mark Carney is like Ignatieff. (Note: Ignatieff spoke far better French.) -
For the PLQ, the Anglo vote is toxic. ==== Quebec is a cauldron.
