  1. I admire our federal Official Languages Act of 1969. But Trudeau first (under Pearson) changed the federal criminal code. ==== In Victoria, we Canadians could have had a Constitution and an amending method. Parizeau and Bourassa are now dead. Claude Morin? Dunno.
  2. Golda Meir was a woman. Margaret Thatcher was a woman. Women can be good leaders. ==== Jimmy Carter was a man. James Buchanan was a man. Men can be good leaders.
  3. Disagree. 1. Bill Gates is not running the world. 2. True, his wife left him. But like Woody Allen, I appreciate his contribution to humanity.
  4. True, both Canada and the US are rich countries. For Americans, the average Social Security payment for people over 65 is US $2000 (taxable) each month. These Americans also have Medicare. For Canadians, the average Canadian retiree receives about Cdn $1550 each month (CPP/OAS/Gains). ===== Older Americans must defend themselves against various health insurance schemes Older Canadians must find their way through the bureaucracy of their provincial health system.
  5. It is hard to manage federal Canada: ask Harper, or Mulroney. Or Chretien. Or certainly King. (I am still amazed that anglo protestant Harper got a majority.) ===== Trudeau Jnr won by the name, and looks. Gerald Butts made him PM. I happen to think that Carney is an arrogant bureaucrat. He is no Harper. No Pearson. He will never win a majority.
  6. In August 1945, there was a regime change in Japan.
  7. This thread is dead serious. Truman avoided many more deaths. There was no need for "boots on the ground" in Japan. ===== FDR approved the creation of the A-bomb. In Potsdam, Truman told Stalin what he was doing. (Stalin didn't understand - later he did.) Truman approved not one but two drops.
  8. Mark Steyn has a different view. For him, like Denys Arcand (1986) it is all about demographics:
  9. I have talked to many people in Quebec. Many. English, French, Catholic, Protestant, whatever. They all hate Trump. No Quebec media, journalist (French/English) has anything good to say about the guy. None. The irony! Trump is a nationalist. And yet these Quebecers are all nationalists! ======= But not all: https://www.journaldemontreal.com/2026/03/06/lantitrumpisme-rend-aveugle
  10. Few English Canadians know our story. In the early 1960s, Trudeau Snr asked Levesque about going into politics. I remember Jean Marchand. I met him in a shopping mall in Ste-Foy. Heck, Jean Lesage once gave me a lift.
  11. Like Ignatieff, Mark Carney is a smart guy. But Carney is not "in the know". ==== Unlike Trudeau Snr.
  12. Trudeau Jnr had a name, and was handsome. This guy - Carney - is a bureaucrat. Ignatieff was at least real
  13. Are you both real? Prove it: "Who plays third-base for the Dodgers?" And why is the SPTSX so low?
  14. India, Brazil? Africa? Irrelevant. UK, France - like India, nuclear. Irrelevant. Europe? Irrelevant. ===== These guys have to sit down and get along.
  15. After Vietnam, Afghanistan, DEI, Trump wants to make his country: great again. Trump is a nationalist. Putin? After the collapse of the Soviet Union, he wants to protect the Russian people. Xi? After 1911 and the Maoist cultural revolution, he wants to ensure that China grows like Lee.
  16. Yes, I do. Sitting in a Tim Horton's is not life. 1. My point. 2. Agreed.
  17. In 1945, America avoided a ground war, boots on the ground - an invasion - by dropping the A-bomb. Should Trump drop an A-bomb somewhere on Iran? ==== One bomb made it plain that the US was serious. Truman? Two bombs made it plain to the world that a US president is serious.
  18. If Charles had died before, this guy Andrew could now be on our money. He could be our Head of State.
  19. Eyeball is real. John, you're fake.
  20. Disagree. ==== This crazy time change every six months makes no sense. Priorities? Health care? It is costly. Imagine how many people have missed a health appointment for such a stupid change.
  21. Reg, What's your point? This forum is not X.
  22. Barquentine, Like Finland and Sweden, Canada is in a cold, northern climate. Unlike Finland and Sweden, we Canadians have different languages/religions. We get along. We once had a high-trust society.
  23. Disagree. The State should not be involved in civil matters. Collective criminal issues, I agree.
  24. In Canada, the average Canadian retiree receives monthly about Cdn $1550 - except for clawbacks. This is about US $1100. The average Social Security is monthly about $2000. American retirees are almost twice as rich as Canadians. Health care? Older Americans have Medicare.
