Education Ranking: Canada in Top 10 of 40
maplesyrup replied to August1991's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
I'm not sure quoting experts from the US system are the wisest ones to quote as 50%, yes that's right, 50% of the black community in New York City is unemployed. -
Education Ranking: Canada in Top 10 of 40

Canadian math students rank 7th in international study Nothing like having a solid public education system where educated people (teachers) are able to wield a bit of power, have some clout, in the system. So what is it about Finland that produces those kind of results for them. It is a Northern Hemosphere thingy? -
I think Canadians would do well to listen to this individual, as probably more than any other world leader, Musharraf has been living the reality of terrorism, and he no doubt knows a lot more about it than Bush, Blair, Martin and Harper combined. How refreshing it is to get a blast of intelligent reporting rather than the typical hot air propaganda flowing up to Canada from South of the border. Article

Proportional representation
maplesyrup replied to fellowtraveller's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
As much as possible, everybody's vote should count, and the closest way for that to happen is some form of PR. Unless you don't believe in democracy of course. People are so reluctant to change - too bad, as change is the only consistent thing in life. -
If one is opposed to the gun registry one can always find absurd reasons not to support it. The issue is dead, pun intended. Time to move on.

ft.............what you overlooked in the data on your link is that shooting contributed the most of all the methods of homocides. I know you people love to compare yourselves to the US all the time, so what are the comparative figures with the US?
-
You don't throw the baby out with the bath water. Canada's gun registry is here to stay, and Canadian police use it at least 1,500 times a day. Some of the costs are attribitable to the NRA. Costs will slow down now. Apparently Galloway does not have the support of one other Liberal MP so his motion will not pass.

Student Testing at Breaking Point? All these tests are bullshit and should be scrapped - kids need to be allowed to be kids. -
Parents: Sex-ed course links to porn What's wrong with the title of this article about sex education? It is very misleading as it suggests that kids are being subjected to porno sites by the school. Unfortunately very typical of our capitalistic press which tries to hook you with very inappropriate and sensationalistic headlines. Children are not being offered porno sites by their schools. It is just that sex educators are very concerned about the explosion of STDs. Kids desperately need these programs. The reality is their parents offer them porno sites every day at home on their computers.

Horrific Crash On Trans Canada Highway

95% Of Canadians Think Truck Drivers Should Be On Duty Only 14 Hours Or Less Sounds like a very good place for a union - maybe the CAW's Buzz Hargrove should take it on. -
Barrick 'threatened and coerced' Bre-X during talks over Busang, court hears Welcome to the business world, eh!

Proportional representation

For a progressive group of folks it does seem a bit inconsistent. Look at what is taking place in BC as well! For a political party that insists your membership be for the same party both federally and provincially, one would imagine they would have the same policies, however it is not always the case. I suppose that is why some members ignore the federal/provincial rule. -
Janet Jackson's Exposed Breast
maplesyrup replied to maplesyrup's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
One of the problem with loading the deck like this conservative group did in the US (99.8% of the complaints to the FCC) is that the FCC began an investigation and have fined or are threatening to fine big bucks for the non-uproar. It seems like McCarthyism is alive and well in the US. -

99.8% of the complaints about Janet to the FCC were from one conservative activist group. The US is starting to become a scary society. -
Horrific Crash On Trans Canada Highway

-from the North Shore News Impressive. There is a nightmare out there on our roads. They need to set something similiar to aircare where all vehicles have to be inspected annually, perhaps more often for trucks, for safety deficiencies. Canadians needs a Royal Commission into Safety on our Roads. -
Activists Dominate Content Complaints Remember that massive avalanche of complaints the FCC received concerning Janet Jackson's exposed breast during what was it, the Super Bowl last year? Well as it turns out the overwhelming majority of them came from one conservative activist group. I always thought the whole uproar was absurd. After all most women have a couple of breasts, so what is the big deal. Now we know, there was none, as it was all smoke and mirrors.

Canada Practicing Systemic Racism
maplesyrup replied to maplesyrup's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
The "Father Knows Best" TV show died a long time ago. The longer we wait to negotiate these threaties, the more costly it is going to be for us honkys. Let's get on with it so it can still be a win-win situation, otherwise we honkys increase the risk of losing everything. -
Group claims to have bombed Quebec hydro tower So much for al-Queda being involved, eh! Now on to next major security event of this past weekend: The so-called missing CATSA uniforms. Just saw the Transportation Minister with some of the missing bages - Lapierre stated that the reason the security badges were missing is that cheap velco was used, and the badges just fell off the uniforms. So much for that big crisis at our airports, eh! Time for people to lose their paranoia about security issues in Canada as Canadians might suspect these issues are milked to create business for the security industry. Anyway what do you expect in the quality of work when you don't pay decent wages?

Ex-ambassador warns against missile defence As I have suspected all along, all this BMD is going to do is line the pockets of fat cat defence contractors, and place the entire planet in more jeopardy by escalating the arms race. -
