  1. The gun registry includes gun control. The screening process is part of the process to register your firearms. you need to go through the screening process before you can register your guns. Most of the money spent has been for the screening process.
  2. Where Will Green Voters Go? One thing that has become quite apparent is that the Greens are not a homgeneous group, as it says in the article Rafe Mair voted for the Greens in the last election.
  3. You are mistaken. This mythology is practiced by those who support the gun registry - like yourself. The gun lobby have repeatedly pointed out that the gun registry is not gun contro and while control actually accomplishes something of value the registry does not. Most of the money spent have been for screening gun owners not registering guns The gun registry is the combination of the screening process and the registration process. Key to preventing particularly domestic violence, and suicdes is the screening process which has information that is not documented in police data bases.
  4. Kerik Pulls Out as Bush Nominee for Homeland Security Job What impeccible credentials - employing an illegal, not paying taxes, etc.
  5. What gay marriage ruling didn't say Intersting article - 1929, eh! I supppose you hear what you want to see and hear.
  6. Jeez, I wonder what happened here. How sad! Teacher slain, husband charged
  7. Now that same sex marriage has arrived, what is next on Canada's agenda? Do you think it will be polygamist marriages? I think it just might be and why not? Who cares what other people do in their own bedroom? I don't know, and I don't want to know.
  8. Gun registry/control is working. 2,000,000 or 95% of firearms' owners are now registered, and close to 6,000,000 or 85% of Canada's firearms are now registered.
  9. Myth? So before the gun registry was enacted, there was no gun control at all? Are you sure about this, syrup? -kimmy Kimmy......1 + 1 doesn't equal 3. Do you know how many people that misogynist at U of Montreal shot 15 years ago?
  10. I agree that it has to be carefully thought out. The CA in BC deliberated for one year, without any political influence, and are recommending an STV system similar to the N Irish system. It is a form of PR. You will have an opportunity to prioritize your candidates. If adopted federally it effectively reduces the power of the PMO, and put more power into the hands of the MPs, which most Canadians would agree, I'm sure, is a good thing. It will reduce the power of the political parties. Usually minority governments work very well as the government party is kept on its toes.
  11. I doubt that very much. Do you think Conservatives in Saskatchewan second choice would be New Democrats? - I don't think so! A good PR can take into account your second and third choices. But the present FPTP system creates an inappropriate situation like this: You have a Conservative supporter living in an NDP riding all her/his voting life. Not once will his vote ever count in the election results. Do you think that is right? Or fair? I certainly don't. Everybody's vote should count. The way it is now it just depends on which riding you live in whether or not your vote will be impacting on the electoral results.
  12. Strike two Maplesyrup. Keep this up and you'll be banned from these forums. Greg Admin Just want to be clear on the rules here now Greg. It is OK to use words like fascists, nazis, commies, communism, but no swearing, is that correct?
  13. Myth No 1: Ending the gun registry is not the same as ending gun control. This is gun lobby initiated mythology and is incorrect!
  14. The gun registry is useful. If police are called to attend an incident at a home they check and see if there are registered weapons there. I have heard police talk about its usefulness. Granted there have been mistakes and the minister involved should have taken responsibility for the government mistakes if there were some, and done the honourable thing and resigned. I am sure a large part of the frustration, is that no one is taking responsibility for the mistakes. I don't believe those figures were all the mistake of the government. There was a campaign by gun owners to block or damage the system, was there not? Maybe the gun owners caused some a lot of the problems. Nothing is black and white like you try to paint it. People in the governernment are like anyone else here. They get up in the morning, go to work, try and do as good as job as possible, and then go home to attend to their family. They are not out to get you.
  15. It will get sorted out. Have you ever been to a credit bureau? They make mistakes, you tell them about it, and it gets corrected. The same thing for the registry, it will get sorted out. You are making a mountain out of a molehill! As I understand opponents of the gun registry caused some of the problems, so you only have yourselves to blame!
  16. So what is going to be achieved here? We are talking about money. People don't like paying taxes of fees, but we are not talking about a toy. Guns kill people. and no one is taking away the guns from law-abiding citizens as far as I know. At one time you didn't have to wear helmut to ride a bike, but now you do, or you will be fined. For whatever reason, we have spent too much on the gun registry in the past. I would hope now that the costs will be better controlled in the future. But as we have the registry, there is, I presume, some grace period for those who wish to register their guns, and then eventually the law will be enforced. Part of the problem with this issue is the state of the jails or pens. Canada already incarcerates too many people, and yet we need to be putting people away for extended periods who commit violent acts. Why are our prisons so full? Are we putting the wrong type of people in jail? What can we do to reduce the prison population without resorting to capital punishment? If people keep complaining, maybe guns will be totally banned for civilians in Canada.
  17. So what if same-sex couples want to get married in the RC Church - it is a private matter between the couple and the church isn't it? If one does not like the RC policies, change churches. If they wish to sue that is a private lawsuit between the church and the couple. Just because one launches a court action, does NOT mean one will win it.
  18. I suppose this is going to used as a reason to oppose ssm in the US - no one denied Brittany Spears being allowed to be married for 55 hours, did, they? Months after the start of gay marriage, the divorces begin
  19. In the 2003 election in Manitoba New Democrats received 48% of the vote, and 35 seats forming a majority government, but 48% of the seats is only 27 seats. Conservatives received 37% and 20 seats Liberal Party received 13% of the vote and 2 seats. Do you thik this is FAIR? I don't. Do you think the New Democrats earned majority government status, with only 48% of the vote, from the voters? I don't.
  20. In the 2003 election in Saskatchewan New Democrats recieved 44.62% of the vote, and 30 seats forming a majority government. Saskatchewan Party received 39.35% and 28 seats. Liberal Party received 14.17% of the vote and no seats. Do you thik this is FAIR? I don't. Do you think the New Democrats earned majority government status, with only 44.62% of the vote, from the voters? I don't.
  21. 2004 federal/national results Liberals received 36.71% of the vote and 135 seats, but 36.71% of the seats is only 113 seats. So Liberals received 22 extra seats because of our current First-Past-The-Post voting system Conservatives received 26.91% of the vote and 99 seats, but 26.91% of the seats is only 83 seats. So Conservatives received 16 extra seats because of the FPTP voting system. Bloc Quebecois received 12.40% of the vote and 54 seats but 12.4% of the seats is only 38 seats. So Bloc Quebecois received 16 extra seats under FPTP. New Democrats received 15.69% of the vote and 19 seats, but 15.69% of the seats is 48 seats. so New Democrats received 29 seats less under FPTP. Greens received 4.3% of the vote and no seats, but 4.3% of the seats is 13 seats. So the Greens received 13 seats less under FPTP. Our voting system should reflect how people vote, and everybody's vote should be equal, or as equal as possible, if one is a true democrat, and really does believe in democracy. That is why a multitude of provinces are already exploring changing their voting system to make it FAIRER and MORE DEMOCRATIC system It is only a matter of time before Ottawa succombs as well. We live in a changing world. Canada is in a state of constant change dealing with issues such as women voting, divorce, homosexuality, SSM, gun control/registry, and now proportional representation. The Citizen's Assembly in BC deliberated for a year and are recommending a form of PR to BC which will be on the ballot during the May, 2005 election.
  22. Maybe the point is is that there is little or no poverty in progressive social democratic countries such as Sweden, Norway, etc.
  23. A Marriage Made in Heaven Not one good reason to oppose SSM, eh! One of the pollsters in the paper this morning says that if PM Martin supports this SSM issue it should help him in the popularity contest. For most people it is not an issue that will change people's voting preferences. Conservatives are against it but Martin wasn't going to get their votes anyways.
