Dutch Consider Forced Use Of Dutch in Religious
maplesyrup replied to maplesyrup's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
Yes, RC services used to be in Latin just like they used to teach Latin in high schools. Now their services are in French and English. Try going to one of their services - don't worry, there isn't a protestant detector that goes off when you enter. -
That would be lunacy. Canadians have no intention of arming themselves with nuclear weapons. That is the most absurd comment I have ever seen posted on this dicsussion forum. You are watching too much US TV.

And what is a nuclear deterent capability comprised of?

Unionize Wal-Mart or Let's Boot Them From Canada
maplesyrup replied to maplesyrup's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
Typical rich person's response - try and divert the issue of employees being exploited by a transnational. Is the world going to come to the end if Wal-Mart ceased operations in Canada? I don't think so. It is always the rich that is willing to let others work for minimum wages so they can receive their dividend cheques. Thanks but no thanks. -
Iran Allegedly Builds Secret Facility for Nuke Program Nice! The only problem is do we believe Der Spiegel or is this more Israeli propaganda? I think we should send a contingent of CSIS agents led by Foreign Affairs Minister Bill Graham & PM Martin to go check it out. The odds of Graham and Martin surviving are probably better than a visit to a Chinese coal mine, eh!
-
You remind me of the language police in Quebec!

Unionizing Wal-Mart Let's teach these scumbags something about Canadian values, eh! Either they are going to begin properly paying their employees or we should run these buggers out of town (Canada). The rest of the world is looking to Canada to set some standards in labour conditions, labour standards. We can survive very well in Canada without Wal-Mart and their elk.

Canadians Too Stupid To Chose Own Food?
maplesyrup replied to maplesyrup's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
Actually I like it. Good suggestion! - we could call it "GET OFF THE COUCH DAY" I guess one day out of 365 is not a bad beginning for a lot of FAT Canadians. -
Article Layton has a valid point. This is more bullshit at the hands of control freak PM Martin

Fears over recovery as Wal-Mart sales stall Not a good omen. Maybe the international campaign of a buy-nothing day is slowly starting to have an impact. Gold May Rise for Seventh Week on Dollar Decline, Survey Shows I think the Price of Gold may hit US$ 500. an ounce.

Perhaps Canada should consider imposing some economic sanctions, as opposed to completely severing diplomatic relations, against Iran if they persist in this outrageous behaviour. Maybe we could stop sending them any more of our "BC Bud". Iran cautions Canada against following case of murdered photographer

Listening to Cross Country Checkup right now. Subject is: To what extent should the Canadian and or provinces government get involved in what we eat? I say go for it as long as it is not smoked by the food industry. Like cigarette smoking we have known for years some of these foods are poisons for human beings. Scientific evidence says these transfats are poisons - let's protect our children, for goodness sake! Guess I should have checked before starting this thread as there already is another one dealing with obesity.

Pro-Kremlin PM Declared Winner In Ukraine Vote
maplesyrup replied to maplesyrup's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
Poll row threatens Ukraine unity This situation is changing minute by minute it seems. Check out the BBC map as it tells the tale. Shades of the US anyone! Canada, as an excellent role model, needs to get involved and show those Ukrainian folks how English and French are able to co-exist in Canada in relatively peaeful way. I think some of our MPs are already heading over there. -

The entire Armenian community in Canada did NOT support the violence in Ottawa (bombing of the Turkish embassy), and NOT all Muslims support violence. But let's make sure all immigrants when they come to Canada are provided with support services so they obtain employment, food, clothing, shelter, and access to medical and education services. It's harder to be a violent revolutionary on a full stomach. -
We should sit at peace table Lyin' Paulie is at it again. PM Martin is such a compulsive liar that sometimes I think he believes his own bullshit.

U.S. Campaign Behind the Turmoil in Kiev So everything is not necessarily what it appears to be in most of the US and Canadian media, eh! -
Dutch Consider Forced Use Of Dutch in Religious
maplesyrup replied to maplesyrup's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
The irony is that I don't believe for one second that Bush is religious. This born again Christian role is just an act to ensure that the religious right stays on track with the GOP. It is, in a lot of ways, the same situation in Canada, with Harper and the Conservatives. The basic difference is that they had a war situation in the US, and Bush is milking it for all it is worth. What concerns me is that we will have a terrorist event in Canada and the right will benefit. Look at what is going already in Canada and nothing has happened yet - Arar Inquiry, that Ottawa Citizen's reporter experience with a RCMP raid, etc. If Martin has his way we will up to our eyeballs with the US in their next endeavour. Look at the horseshit we are going through over missle defence with a prime minister afraid to tell the Canadian people what he is really doing behind our backs because the elites know better than us common folk. -
Dutch Consider Forced Use Of Dutch in Religious
maplesyrup replied to maplesyrup's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
Quite frankly, in these troublesome days screw any religious group. You want to close them up fast - abolish their tax free exemptions! This is utter nonsense for these groups who believe in hocus-pocus (ie God, Allah, Pope Joan, etc, whatever) to go around preaching bullshit like their path is the only true path to enlightenment. 90-95% of religious groups preach hatred of anyone who is not part of their religion. What it is is absolute intolerance, and a lot of religions should be charged under Canada's hate laws. You can't have special privileges for one religion over another. It doesn't work just like you can't have special privileges for either of Canada's two main linguistic groups - French or English. A Toronto schoool board recently had to deal with tolerance concerning the acceptance of gays and lesbians. A religious group of parents came and protested that it was against their religion. They were told in polite terms to fuck off and die. And rightfully so. -
The left demonstrates for one very simple reason. They are the ones that are constantly getting screwed over by oppressive right wing governments. When has the US ever had a progressive government? Or Canada for that matter? I don't think the Guandian principles of non violence, peaceful protests, would have worked to stop Hitler.
-
No. I was going to say the protests against US involvement in Vietnam were successful, but am not so sure of that. I think it was the US death count that caused the biggest impact there. I think the protests against Bush, APEC etc., are a wasted effort. The demonstrations in the Ukraine appear to be working.

Fear replaces tolerance as racism sweeps Holland Canada is going to have to undergo some serious changes in policy if we are to avoid what has happened in Holland. Any immigrants need to be forced to learn English and/or French, perhaps both, if they wish to live in Canada. No religious services in a foreign language, period. It is just too expensive for our police foces to deal with the translation aspects. Anyone who preaches any kind of violence needs to be deported immediately. Any immigrant community need to be encouraged to integrate into the mainstream Canadian commnity, so the immigrant ghettos don't get caught up in violent protests over issues that are taking place in some foreign land, and have nothing whatsoever to do with Canada. If we don't act with preventative medicine, we are going to have an incident, emotions will run high, tolerance will drop, and the right will rise in popularity. We sure don't want that to happen, do we! -
The most successful protest (civil disobedience) ever held in Canada was at Clayoquot Sound, BC over clearcut logging. As a result of the protest, led by women btw, logging companies were forced to change their logging practices on Canada's West coast. The protestors were peaceful, although the same cannot be said for the logging community. I think you have to pick and choose your protests, and not protest every single issue you disagree with. It is important to effect change with your protests, because if you don't have an impact, the less committeed protestors will give up. If you want to have impact you need to do something that is going to be newsworthy. It all boils down to strategy, figuring out what works, and what doesn't.

Will You Be joining In The Protests Against Bush?
maplesyrup replied to maplesyrup's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
They aren't as much worried about the street protests as they are about closet Parrish clones in the Liberal party who might come out during Bush's address to Parliament. What an affront to democracy and the Canadian people that Bush is not even going to address our MPs. Typical Martin antics. Everything has to be controlled like a TV commercial. Just imagine what it could mean to the rest of the world if they were allowed to see how Canadians really feel about Bush's policies instead of this canned bullshit.
