Was Pierre Burton a Canadian patriot? "A country has to have a mythology" I think so!
-
When you analyse the results think about the values that appeal to Canadians: Not US values Not French values What does it mean to be Candian? Diversity Tolerance Not-Belonging Not Acceptance

I remeber one of my Canadian History professors telling me that he was not very impressed with Burton because a lot of his material was hype, and not that accurate. Pierre Burton was one of the panelists on a show called: "Front Page Challenge" and he was entertaining in that role. Like Farley Mowat, Burton had an appreciation for Canada's North, and I appreciate him for that. Was Burton in the CBC's top 100 list of Greatest Canadians? R I P

I always have a good chuckle when I hear how these Bush proponents think they are on the right track with their policies. If they were not just bullies, and had any confidence in their positions why don't they allow freedom of the press in the US? And everybody by now must realize there is NOT freedom of the press any more in the US. /169

Like every other political party the NDP has made mistakes while in power. A lot of people in BC were quite disappointed with Clark's personal behaviour - I know he was framed, but he was being very naive, or just stupid, concerning his relationship with the fellow who built his deck or renovations to his home. Politics is a dirty game and you have to be very careful how you conduct your personal affairs. But Clark is gone now, and if you have been following the recent spat of NDP nominations, Carole James seems to be creating a welcome change, bringing in some people from the business community. But to suggest that social democrats are the only ones who screw up is absurd - Look at what happened to the Conservatives in Saskatchewan, the Union Nationale in Quebec, the Liberals Sponsorship and Arar Inquiries. And that Colin Thatcher wasn't he a murderer? All parties screw up at times, but we need to live in the present, not the past. Presently in Canada we have three provinces paying in more than their share: Alberta - Conservative government Ontario - Liberal government Saskatchewan - New Democratic government.

This was a great show produced by the CBC, with over 1,000,000 Canadians voting for their greatest Canadian. Apparently over 4,000 schools participated in some way with the project, and the winner was the person most important to all Canadians - the founder of medicare in Canada, Tommy Douglas, former premier of Saskatchewan. I wonder how many Canadians realize that Tommy Douglas was born in Scotland. Ed Broadbent and Jack Layton must have been thrilled last evening! (now let's wait for another of august's diatribes (read rants) against the CBC)

If the contest was restricted to living people I would have voted for Mr Suzuki.

I had heard labour was going to pull out all the stops like never before to rid BC of the drunk who is currently at the helm of our province. Maybe once the election over, BC can get back to being a healthy province for all its citizens not just the few select CEOs.
-
Canada should consider a "Tommy Douglas Day" maybe as a national holiday in February.

As well the Green party leader ran in the election and quickly became a non-factor. Progressive Greens will be supporting the NDP in the next election, as the Green party has no chance of removing Campbell from power. Like the recent Surrey Panorama Ridge by-election results, a lot of people are going to be very surprised with the BC election results next May.

Tommy Douglas 'father of universal health care' voted Greatest Canadian Interesting that Canadians would chose a preacher man, a minister from the Prairies, as their most admired person who ever lived in Canada. Just shows it doesn't matter where you are born in this great land, but what you do with your life. Truly remarkable show!
-
And the winner is a Prairie boy - finally Tommy Douglas is getting the recognition he deserves: Final standings: 1. T.C. Douglas. 2. Terry Fox. 3. Pierre Trudeau. 4. Sir Frederick Banting. 5. David Suzuki. 6. Lester Pearson. 7. Don Cherry. 8. Sir John A. Macdonald. 9. Alexander Graham Bell. 10. Wayne Gretzky.

CBC just announced that the final two contestants had equal votes from women and men.

Is it tonite they chose the winner?

We had better recall our troops from Afghanastan, and send them up to the Arctic to protect our black gold from the Yanks, eh! Maybe the US will turn out to be the biggest threat to Canada's sovereignty, even more than Le Bloc. Under All That Ice, Maybe Oil -
How many times have we seen articles in the mainstream press that research shows such and such a product is good for your health, right up even to and including Canada's Food Guide? It's all bullshit paid for by corporations. And yes, even Canada's Health Food Guide. At one point Health Canada wanted to reduce the quantity of milk they recommended and there was such an outcry from the milk producers the healthy recommendations were derailed. Why is it that corporations feel they have to deceive us to promote their products? Don't they realize for long term health of their businesses they are much better off telling us the truth? Oh, and as far as that glass of wine being good for you is concerned. it's nonsense, not a shred of truth to it. As a matter of fact drinking alcohol is probably the worst possible thing you can do to your body after cigarette smoking. What Canada needs to do is to start taxing corporations again, we used to tax them you know, and remove corporations from their involvement in education, and any government scientific research especially at Heath Canada and Agriculture Canada, and any Education Departments. The additional taxes could pay for the unbiased research and heathy education that would result in benefiting all Canadians.

Unionize Wal-Mart or Let's Boot Them From Canada

Argus......makes valid points. It is obvious to everyone except the people with the rich right wing agendas, that economically a mixed system is by far the most beneficial for most in our society. There is no need to take a simple subject and try to bamboozle people by saying it is very complex. It isn't. Absolute power corrupts absolutely and as unfortunately the rich live spurred on by the greed factor, so sometimes we need controls to balance things out. Wal-Mart does nothing for anyone in Canada except it puts people out of decent paying work, and puts Canadian companies out of business. Who needs this kind of garbage! -
The price of Spot Gold in New York today closed at US$ 453.40. up US$ 4.40 over Friday's close, so the precious metals market continues upwards unabatted. /1058

Who Was Canada's Biggest Monster?
maplesyrup replied to maplesyrup's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
Some might say it was Clifford Olson. Others mention it might well be that guy from Port Coquitlam (downtown Eastside missing women)who is going on trial soon I hope. And others say it could be Lepine (U de Montreal female students). -
Canada, to its shame, is the only country in the industralized world to not have a national housing program. This is really quite inhumane, especially to the homeless, as we live in a harsh cold climate during wintertime. I know the NDP, when it obtains power, will immediately implement such a program, but presently Canada's housing situation is a national disgrace.

Monstrosity and humanity live hand in hand Our planet has had its monsters - Stalin, Hitler, Pol Pot. But who have Canada's monsters been? Although not to the same extent, I'm sure we Canadians are not exempt.

Couldn't disagree more. Putin has made a major blunder, he is going to lose face, which is going to come back to haunt him in the years to come. The "Orange Revolution" will win, probably via new elections. ‘Orange Revolution' Gears Up For Fight
