Tories turning attacks toward Layton, NDP
blueblood replied to nittanylionstorm07's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
That works when there are no low tax jurisdictions around. People will put a little extra zip into their work when they are taxed less. When you are taxed less you get to keep more of what you make. People will always want to earn more, but when its show time the low tax method often produces the best results. Why do the ndp in manitoba have a 0% tax rate on small businesses? If there are higher taxes, it provides incentive to incurr more expenses on the business. A lot of guys in sole proprietorships were faced with this dilemna. When it gets to the point where a person gets dinged 44% + at tax time, there's not much incentive to haul ass once the bills are paid. -
I am a pretty big prude, but I won't let something like that ruin a show for me and I try to keep an open mind. I was a little miffed at the lack of ass kickery in the show, but I figured it was a good enough story so far to balance that out. I liked the ass kickery of the pacific and if there could be ass kickery on that scale I would be a happy cowboy. Sounds like the show will probly get a fair balance of t and a with people being fileted. I wonder if this is shaping up to be like the borgias. I'm surprised it got the 14a rating

I'd recommend watching a streaming online episode if one can find it. I have a feeling it could be lost like in that jumping in partway through could make it harder to follow.

I was channel surfing last sunday and happened to catch game of thrones on hbo canada. At first my inner geek was tempted and I started to watch hoping to see some sword fighting and pitched battles. However that wasn't the case and so far it was character development and getting viewers into the story. I thought it was solid story telling and it didn't matter if they were swinging swords or were clad in armour, I forgot about that halfway thru. My only beef was the excess nudity, but I guess it helps accent the sexuality of the show and make that aspect a central theme. Now this show airs on prime time and is rated 14A. All in all I was presently surprised by the show and wouldn't recommend it to mr. Canada because well his head would explode. I would like to know what our more knowledgeable and articulate tv and film afficionados (kimmy and august1991 and others) think about it.

Are women in danger of losing their abortion rights?

Usa is number 1, why am I not surprised -
If they say that rae is a former ndp turned liberal, let's talk about the biggest former ndp turned liberal screw up in history. His name Trudeau. Where do you think trudeau got some of his economically illiterate ideas? No wonder the ndp tries to be fiscally prudent these days, they have a branding war to fight.

And there our friends to the south... They take in per year what sweden has on their waiting list. Country population has nothing to do with it, its where people are wanting to go. The fact is north america has been and always will be the place to go. Being a land of opportunity does that. -

And there are many more in north america. Population has nothing to so with it. Why do so many people choose to come to north america vs scandinavia? Some of those companies you note are in trouble themselves... -

Entrepreneurship isn't about starting a business in a garage and keeping it that size. Its about starting a business, and growing that business as big as one wants. It also means that if the business fails, then blow it up and start all over again and learn from your mistakes. High taxes and wealth distribution aren't a part of it. All the nordic model does is distort the market to prop up businesses that shouldn't be in operation, while at the same time hindering successful businesses with high taxes to prop up what should be failed businesses. -

Its not terrible when people buy into it. In scandinavia and western europe (except for the uk and ireland) they have a different culture than in north america, that culture has gone on for a very long time. They don't like the fact of some people getting ahead and some people don't. Over here that's fine. In north america, the govt is viewed as something that creates an environment for people to do well. Over there the govt ensures everyone isn't in poverty or tries very hard to do so. It works over there because people there don't mind living without luxuries that we enjoy and don't mind paying very high tax. Over here I don't think that it would work because north america is far more entrepreneurial in attitude than over there. We have a free to succeed and free to fail, and it has worked for us in north america. However I think big govt is unsustainable and there are examples of that around the world. For that reason I wouldn't vote ndp. Fareed zakaria talked about that some time back in his how to fix america special. -

And that's an agenda many people don't want. -

There is a hidden agenda for all the parties. It wouldn't put it past me if some ndp supporters wanted canada to have a system like scandinavia or western europe. In all reality, both forms of implementing the "hidden agenda" would be political suicide. That's why a lot of canadians don't support the ndp. -

And in 4 years that party would get destroyed in an election. Do you think the party would stand for that? Harper would be like chretien - gone! -

Ah, but mine and smallc's mp had over 50% of the votes, but got on harper's bad list and eventually had to "retire" -

Ah but it matters, because we get to be like the talking heads on tv. Don't worry, I cancelled your vote As for harper, being pm is far more important than being mr. Social conservative. The centrist vote in ontario is worth more to harper than the bc bible thumper vote. -
Yet chretien had a long majority term as well until his caucus tossed him out. Its not the pm as a person who runs the show, its the party. As witnessed with chretien, the leader can be tossed out in a majority situation at will. So why would the tory party want to lose power when they could be like their alberta friends and be boring and change leaders when they see fit?

MLW federal election poll
blueblood replied to Moonlight Graham's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
Nope, it took the complete fall of the soviet union. Grain production has steadily grown thanks to private ownership and the black sea area is a major player in the grain export market. It took a massive drought to make them stop exporting this crop year. They can now export far more efficiently than canada can and what's more interesting is that they are not yet at our levels of production. Communism+grain production= failure -
Mulroney and trudeau ended up getting anhialated after attempting to make major changes. Let's look at alberta, same old boring pc party in charge for 40 yrs. Lesson of the day, don't rock the boat. Why would tory brass want to be in charge for 5 yrs, implement something drastic and then get thrown out, when they could be in charge for decades doing as little as possible? The hidden agenda isn't logical.

Exactly, guys like trost are a dime a dozen. If harper wins a majority, why would he risk it by opening a can of worms closed over 20 yrs ago. Being PM is worth more than being mr. Pro life. There are plenty of people who would be happy to replace trost. -
Federal Elections 2011: Seat Predictions
blueblood replied to August1991's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
Your talking about attack ads right? I seen the liberal's new gem, it rivals the soldiers in our street with guns. All the tories need to do is yak about their accomplishments and keep the positive message (the famous cheesy jumbo jet w/ jet fighters). If the tories don't do anything that bleeds votes as well, they still need to campaign. Attack ads with a week to go are desperate. -
Federal Elections 2011: Seat Predictions
blueblood replied to August1991's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
Your right, the tories shouldn't run attack ads now, too late in the game for that. The tories should run ads about all their accomplishments and how the business sector plus economists like the tory plan. And running that cheesy ad with the jumbo liner with 2 jet fighters as much as possible during prime time won't hurt either. Time for an ad (positive) blitz!! -
And why would harper want to lose a majority govt in 2015 due to some extreme ideology?
-
The ndp will be considerably stronger this election, that is not up for debate. I think the tories will get their majority, and it will be by the skin of their teeth. Tory numbers have stayed in their trading range of 38-42 percent consistently throughout the campaign. The only party to really have trended upwards was the ndp. I'd be waiting for 2015 if I was an ndp supporter for a legit shot at govt. You guys are where the tories were in 2000. Official opposition on an upward trend. I don't know why ndpers would be so upset with a tory majority. The ndp would likely get official opposition, a big boost to their brand, 4 yrs to establish and grow credibility, and time to grow as a party.

This is the most proposterous debate in this election. This debate was settled 20 yrs ago or so. There are lots of people who don't like the results and have a valid point, but that's neither here nor there because its been settled. Here's how I see it. The "pro-lifers" get a free pass on cutting funding because they can wave the economy/taxpayer card and complain about the costs. That's as far as it goes. Any further "meddling" and the pass is revoked because the whole debate from 20 yrs ago rears its ugly head. Another thing I see is that brad trost has buried his political career and will either be stuck in the back benches or be forced to retire soon. All trost did was go to his base and gave a theory of what went on. I don't think trost is high enough up on the food chain to be having much input on monetary policy. My question is why would harper want to risk losing an election and possibly his majority govt in 2015 over an issue settled 20 yrs ago to a party that would use this to beat the tories over the head with. Nope, harper will cut the purse strings and that's it. Harper prefers to be PM instead of appeasing some religious people who will vote for him anyway. -
Inflation at its highest rates in more than two years
blueblood replied to WWWTT's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
Hydraboss, how much work do you have? Since you are in the oil and gas sector, I will assume you have a lot. It could be worse, you could own a furniture store in ohio right now and have to deal with a country being a net importer of energy and unemployed factory workers. All of a sudden that 130 dollar truck fillup doesn't look so bad. Being in the ag industry I have to deal with people complaining about high food prices even though canada is one of the largest exporters in the world. Yes the groceries cost more, but I have much better returns than when food was cheap and the govt gets to collect more tax dollars. No one in the ag industry complains about fuel anymore. Higher fuel prices these days haven't cut into margins and in a way have benefitted us. Look at how much govts in canada spend, if we didn't have oil and gas and ag exports helping us out, I cringe to think of what my tax bill would be to pay for all of this we currently have...
