  1. Oh and Obama did much better tonight. According to CNN, Romney won on the money side of things and Medicare. Obama won on foreign policy and the debate itself. Romney is in the harder space because he is advocating a more negative position on things than obama is. John king stated that Obama needed to win on economic matters, the deficit, and Medicare, and unfortunately he didn't. It's a weird poll, but that's how they scored it.
  2. Harper had to run deficits or the opposition would have booted his party out of government. Hence the proroguing situation. We don't know what Harper would have wanted to do because he didn't have a majority with an election 3+ years away.
  3. It's all about the money and attracting skilled athletes. To be competitive with the NBA, NFL, and MLB, and perhaps soccer, the NHL needs 30 teams in strategic locations to grow the prestige of the league in order to grow the fan base, make money, and attract skilled athletes. Given the NHL growth over the past 20 years, check. Is the league watered down, given growth of the pool to draw players from and the levels of conditioning that players go through, I'd say the talent is there. We now draw players from all over the USA, europe, and Canada. The owners wanted to expand south because of the competition of the NBA, NFL, and MLB. If the league just stayed in Canada, growth would be capped, and any person wanting to pursue a career as an athlete would play another sport, thus relegating hockey to a shadow of what it can be. Given growth in Europe, the owners are going after the ultimate prize in the sporting world, a league as elite as the UEFA and all the money that goes with it, that would take a hundred or so years to do, but in order to start it has to expand in the USA. To do all that, it starts with 30 teams and steadily grows market share. Right now the NHL is tooth and nail with the NBA which is a major accomplishment. A far better position then the NHL was in 25 yrs ago before proper management came in and the league was in trouble.
  4. In Canada it's different. It doesn't get piled on, it goes down the chain in the criminal code. S.271 sexual assault, s. 272 sexual assault causing bodily harm/sexual assault with a weapon, or s. 273 aggravated sexual assault (fed pen time)
  5. Good example, best players play in the big show, ask Fantuz who tried out for the bears. Same goes with hockey, I don't see any Canadians beating a path to the khl. Even if there was just a Canadian only league, the NHL would crush it because the best players go where the money and glory are. There has to be 30 teams. Every sports league is going with 30 and they are placed in markets throughout north America. Should the NBA and MLB start shutting down teams because of poor attendance? League revenues are increasing and growth in the USA is slow but steady. I'll go with the opinion of billionaires who own the teams and who know how to grow a business over Joe hockey fan any day of the week.
  6. Because we all know how the cfl compares to the NFL. The NHL is fine the way it is. It has to be 30 teams because every other relevant league in the big 4 has approx. 30 teams. A Canadian only pro league would be a disaster as players want to play in the best league they can, and that league knows that expansion into the USA is a necessity. Americans like teams that win, look at any sporting venue in the states when the team isn't winning it's a ghost town, not only that the country as a whole is hurting financially. For example st. Louis was losing for the better part of the decade and had poor attendance, when they started winning, their attendance was comparable with other high attendance teams in the league.
  7. Once again that's a cop out. I blame EVERYONE for that little disaster. I have no sympathy for govts who regulate stupidly, bankers that make bad loans, and people who think they have the God given right to live in a fancy pants house even though their paycheck is shit. I suggest also reading meltdown by Thomas woods JR. For another perspective. Had everyone acted more responsibly this wouldn't have happened. Nobody forced those people to walk in the banks as no one forced the bankers to rig up the mortgages shell game.
  8. It's also a persons responsibility to manage their finances properly. If your too stupid to buy a house you can't afford instead of rent, you deserve the consequences. Greed and entitlement and the enablement of the greed and entitlement by all players caused this problem. Why should ordinary people who asked for those loans they couldn't afford be given a pass, because they're not fat cats? That's a cop out and you know it. Their hands are just as dirty as the bankers and the government.
  9. At least there is some consistency of not allowing nut bars into the country. I don't think it says in the charter that foreigners have the constitutional right to visit Canada. Not only that, his speeches would be skating on thin ice as far as the criminal code was concerned
  10. So you would lump in the irresponsible buffoons with a sense of entitlement strolling into the bank and asking for a loan they couldn't afford in with those same private entities? They are just as guilty as everyone else.
  11. Democrat - hot tempered, entitled, not a hard worker Republican - very rational, intelligent, started and grew a business, creates wealth for himself and others It's pretty much how I feel like when talking to our resident liberal ideologues.
  12. I strongly suggest rifling through the criminal code, section 494 explains what a citizens powers of arrest are. It's up to the citizen executing the arrest to articulate why he used x amt. of force to affect an arrest during the commission of an offense. Where citizens run into problems is they try and arrest after an offense has taken place. I think section 25, 27, and 30 also state the parameters of how an ordinary citizen can legally stop the commission of an offense. S. 27.1 CC even states parameters on an airplane.
  13. As dumb as mr. Canada is, there is a cause of concern about his plans to jack up taxes on those grossing 250k. That's a lot of small businesses and people. It's a slap in the face for being successful.
  14. I agree, it's been night and day for the NHL since Bettman came in. Revenues are not only up, they're up huge. Any other CEO that had a track record like his would be praised. The NHL right now is neck and neck with the NBA. They play in the same arenas and the NHL recently has been filling a greater percentage of the stadiums than most NBA teams in the same cities, if I had a guy like Bettman running things, I'd be keeping him around as long as possible. The winter classic has been competing quite successfully with college football during the early part of bowl season! As for all the negativity with going to the USA, they need to go somewhere to grow, the game can't be grown in Canada because we are all ready hockey fans. The only league that's in trouble IMO is he NBA. As for the lockout, the players need to get their heads out of their ass. 50-50 revenue sharing is a very very sweet deal. Also the thing with NHL players is that there are scores and scores of little tykes coming through the ranks and the current guys aren't getting younger... It's why labour disputes in sports don't go too well for the players
  15. Omar will probably be still in the justice system for quite some time. If he gets released on parole, one can only imagine the conditions he will have and how long those conditions will last. I smell door knocks every night at 2,3,4,5 in the morning...
  16. Even if khadr is released, God knows what his release conditions are... And any bets at how tight those conditions would be enforced... E
  17. How about do nothing and let the NYMEX do what it does best. $150 oil fixes wasteful consumption in short order...
  18. That's nothing compared to S. 365 CC. ----> fraudulently practicing witchcraft
  19. At least the Tories are considering pension changes. How did that go with the other guys?
  20. No rich person paid 90 percent of his income in taxes. They lobbied for numerous loopholes which Reagan closed when he dropped the tax rate. Big govt didn't turn the USA into a superpower before the first world war. That was the industrialists and their workers. The USA grew at it's fastest pace when the govt was air it's smallest. We've been thru is before. The gilded age turned the USA into a superpower, not big government. Big government does not create wealth, people do. Imagine massive economic growth and no debt!
  21. We've already discussed waldo's debating skills in an MLW poll and things didn't turn out roses for him...
  22. This is why so many people get turned off of centre right politics. Nut bars like this person. No wonder the republicans are in trouble...
  23. No you can't because your not taking into account inflation. Harper didn't want to spend, but you guys forced his hand with the coalition. Blaming Harper is like blaming Obama for the compounding debt the USA faces. If Romney wins, he would be running the largest deficits in USA history unless he cut like Ireland did.
  24. Wtf? Everybody has to pay taxes, the debate is how much. Does the USA really need that big of a govt when they've done as well if not better with a much smaller one many many years ago?
  25. Romney pays more dollars, creates wealth and jobs. He's contributing more to society than those other people, why shouldn't he enjoy a lower rate?
