There can't really be a fixed date if there is a minority. A vote of non confidence has to trigger an election because a government can't govern without it. If there is a majority, there is no reason not to have fixed dates other than pure politics.

NAFTA negotiations.

Trump whined continually about other country’s auto tariffs when US tariffs were only 2.5%. As soon as he is offered zero tariffs from those he was complaining about, he turns tail and runs away. Trump is just a poser. Of course he coveniently omits the 25% light truck tariff. Hell will freeze over before that goes because that’s about all the US builds these days. -

Exactly, his BS about removing all tariffs was just BS. Don't build what people want and get pissed off because people won't buy what you are making. The US has given up on cars and gone all in on trucks and SUV's. The US has a 25% tariff on its core market of light trucks and Trump bitches about other country's tariffs. Europe and Asia don't want trucks and SUV's therefore it is their fault. Capitalist logic Trumpster style. Trump and the US will never go all in on free trade because there are just to many areas where the US is no longer competitive. You should give up on that lie because Trump himself has discredited it too many times. -

Just being pragmatic. I fully agree with Trudeau's remarks, just not convinced it was the right strategy as far a NAFTA is concerned. Turned out to be a mute point anyway as Trump has admitted he had no intention of bargaining in good faith. -

Trudeau might have been a little wiser not to have made his post G7 comments even if they were what a majority of Canadians were thinking. On the other hand, we don’t know what might have happened between the two of them that might have prompted those comments. Trump’s actions at the G7 pretty much insulted every other country there, just like NATO meeting. -

If the existing quota is already supplying the market, what good would increasing it do? The American’s problem is their system always winds up producing way too much for the market. Canada can’t fix that for them even if we give them our whole market. Wisconsin alone has more dairy cattle than all of Canada. Fuck Trump, why should we sacrifice a whole industry just to satisfy that asshole’s ego. -

Any further imposition of tariffs will be entirely on Trump now that he has admitted to never having any intention of bargaining in good faith. Thanks Donny, we thought it, now everyone knows it. -

Freeland said the American team has been negotiating in good faith. The problem is Trump himself. SURPRISE! After those comments, the Canadians would be completely justified in walking away but Trump's blatant dishonesty sure plays into Canada's hands. -
True, it only really works in the case of majority governments. With a minority, all it does is give the opposition control of the election date.

So much for Trump's deadline. Their subsidies were almost as much as their surplus. Maybe just as much if you include their subsidized feed. So much for Trump's Friday deadline. -

Trump rejects EU offer of zero auto and other tariffs. And we are expected to swallow your BS about zero tariffs between the US and Canada. -
Trump caves in to EU on trade

So much for Trump BS on getting rid of auto tariffs between US and the EU. Trump rejects EU offer to eliminate auto tariffs. -
Has Trump made it necessary to disband NATO?
Wilber replied to turningrite's topic in Canada / United States Relations
Some say we should be like neutrals such as Sweden and Switzerland. Both have compulsory military service. When you are a neutral with no alliances, you have to look after yourself. -
That's true of most rural areas, not just the prairies. Our town has 140,000 people but a large part of it is rural. Our police call the most western rural area the wild west. Not because it is but because they just don't have the bodies to patrol it and can only respond to calls.

Plus of course, the grain American farmers feed their animals is also subsidized. Corn Soybeans Of course this doesn't include the 6 billion package Trump announced for soy and grain producers that could go as high as 12 billion. Donald Trump, free trader. Total bullshit. -

The end of Globalization, the rise of Economic Nationalism
Wilber replied to paxamericana's topic in Political Philosophy
I’m not anti American, never have been but at times arrogant boors such as yourself make it a real chore not to be. You seem to work very hard at it. As an American who has no attachment to or real knowledge of a country called Canada, that is something you are not capable of understanding. Not wanting to be an American is not being anti American. -
