WSJ: Bidens Profited From Family Name
Rebound replied to Deluge's topic in Federal Politics in the United States
Oh, you’re “hearing” things? Here in America, we don’t charge people with crimes because “we hear things.” Did you hear the one about “Jared Kushner received $2 billion from Saudi Arabia”? Did you hear the one about Trump defending his valuation of Mar-a-Lago by saying that “the Saudis” will buy it for any price he wants? -

That is utter f-ing BS. Target, Amazon and Wal-Mart all do billions in business with China. It’s not a threat to national security. Hey, you know what IS a threat to national security? Taking ultra top secret documents about our nations most closely guarded nuclear weapons secrets and storing them in cardboard boxes in an unguarded bathroom. Of the classified evidence in the documents case, seven of the documents are so sensitive that attorneys cannot even see them in a SCIF facility in Florida; they can only be stored in a special location in Washington. THAT is a threat to national security. -

My wife loves The Today Show. She watches it every morning. You know who’s regularly on The Today Show? Jenna Bush. That’s fine with me. She’s awfully charming. But we all know the reason she has the job is that she is the daughter of a major political dynasty. For that matter, why did George W Bush have a shot at the White House? Because of his father’s name! Ivanka Trump sells Trump branded merchandise. She literally sells her family name. And the Kennedy family? Surely they benefit from the family name. What has Hunter Biden really done? What we KNOW he did was get lucrative jobs because the Yale-educated attorney brought the panache of the Biden family name with him. THAT, we know. Sorry to break it to you, but that is perfectly legal. If evidence surfaces that Hunter or other Biden’s received money in return for acts taken by Joe which used his government authority, there simply is nothing here at all. -

Of course! Plenty of change is bad, but it’s still change. A company called Xerox hired a bunch of engineers to create ideas for the future of office automation. So they invented the graphical user interface, including windowing. They invented the mouse, and Ethernet, and the laser printer. Pretty Big Change. But the executives at Xerox didn’t like this change. They declared that their business was making copying machines, so they gave all of this technology away. Cars are changing to electric technology. Energy production is changing to renewables. Communications systems are instant. It doesn’t matter whether these changes are good or bad; they simply ARE. There will be winners and losers. All I can say is that the Conservative who resists change will be left out.

How’s that defense working for them? -
Change happens whether we want it or not. The world changes. The behavior of foreign governments changes. Military threats change. Society changes. When the SCOTUS legalized gay marriage, they noted that society had changed. In 2004, Gavin Newsom was the first government official in the county to legalize gay marriages, and it took over a decade until, in 2015, the SCOTUS overturned all prohibitions against gay marriage nationwide. Things change whether we want them to or not. We don’t live in the world of the 1950’s.

It’s a good question. I don’t know whether lenders routinely rely upon tax assessments in order to determine the value of a piece of property. For that matter, when I’ve bought or refinanced property in the United States, the lenders have required me to pay a professional of their choice to perform an assessment of the property’s value. I don’t know how it works with larger transactions; do you? I think that, whether the banks perform their own evaluations or not, they ask on the application forms for statements of square footage and value. And the judge said there are margins in these estimations, but not on the order of 300% in square footage and jumping $18 million to $1 billion in value. -

I know what your theory is, but it’s not part of the law. At any rate, the ruling is done and the odds of a successful appeal are very poor. Trump waived his right to a jury trial in this case, and the judge saw prima facie evidence of fraud before the trial even began. It’s surprising to me that Trump couldn’t even describe any means of validating his properties. There are well-established means, such as comparing the property to recently sold comp properties. Let me give you one example: Mar-a-Lago. The Palm Beach tax assessor stated that Mar-a-Lago was worth $26 million. Trump appealed this, explaining that the property was encumbered by certain deed restrictions which reduced its value. The assessor then ruled a value of I believe $18 million. So the judge in New York simply repeats this, and the Trump family loudly complains that their property is worth $1 billion! You tell me: Is Mar-a-Lago worth $18 million or $1 billion? Trump has said both, but it must be one or the other. He also stated on many disclosure documents that the square footage of his Trump Tower penthouse was 30,000 square feet, when it was under 11,000 square feet. That’s a 300% discrepancy. -

Good luck making up your own laws. He’s been found guilty. His legal defense of “Everybody knows I’m a conman” didn’t work or wasn’t used. -

I make no assumptions. The man supports Vladimir Putin, he has said so many times, and he does not deny it here, does he? The Ukrainians fight. The Afghanis did not. -
None of the criminal indictments against Trump involve the 2024 election. He broke laws. Your pathetic excuse for his crimes in New York are that the people he lied to should have known he was lying to them. Which is pretty much the worst legal defense ever. It’s right up there with “It wasn’t rape because she knew he was raping her.”

The law doesn’t work that way. The law is the law and it says what it says and break it at your own risk. 18 U.S.C. §§ 1341 “Whoever, having devised or intending to devise any scheme or artifice to defraud, or for obtaining money or property by means of false or fraudulent pretenses, representations, or promises, or to sell, dispose of, loan, exchange, alter, give away, distribute, supply, or furnish or procure for unlawful use any counterfeit or spurious coin, obligation, security, or other article… shall be fined under this title or imprisoned not more than 20 years, or both.” In evaluating real estate, there is a LOT of wiggle room, but not nearly as much as Trump wiggled. He overstated square footage by 300%!!! -

I know this one is really hard for you to swallow: Hunter Biden is not a government official. And if there is any evidence that any of the money or gifts he received were received or earned illegally, I will be happy to agree that he should be prosecuted.
