Bibi finally succumbs to pressure and apologizes to Turkey for its role in the Gaza flotilla raid and agrees to pay compensation to the families of the victims. This admission of guilt is of course, political. It coincides with Obama's visit to Israel and it comes at a time when U.S. and Israel are looking for more support from Turkey in regards to Syria and Iran. Nine Turkish activists were killed when Israeli commandos boarded the Mavi Marmara in an operation to prevent it and other ships in the flotilla from reaching Gaza. The bloody confrontation was met with a wave of international condemnation, and Israel was forced to ease its stringent blockade of the tiny Palestinian enclave. Turkey cut all diplomatic ties with Israel following the incident, and demanded that the Gaza blockade be lifted before normal relations would be restored. In Gaza, which has been ruled by the Islamist movement Hamas for almost six years, Turkey was hailed as a champion of Palestinian rights. Reconciliation talks ran into trouble recently when Erdogan called Zionism a "crime against humanity" and compared it to fascism. Link

What? The colonies are illegal under various provisions of international law. Article 49, paragraph 6, of the fourth Geneva Convention, which Israel signed, stipulates that: The Occupying Power shall not deport or transfer parts of its own civilian population into the territory it occupies. What is more: The Rome Statute of the International Criminal Court (ICC) also expressly identifies the transfer of an Occupying power’s own civilian population to the territory it occupies as a war crime punishable by the ICC. In 2004, the International Court of Justice gave a formal ruling to the effect that Israeli settlements in occupied Palestinian territory, including East Jerusalem, violated international law. Many human rights reports found that Israeli colonies and their associated institutions inherently violate international law. These colonies and their related infrastructure, such as checkpoints and roads for exclusive Israeli use, severely restrict Palestinians' access to jobs, lands, schools and hospitals.

Expecting Israel to follow international law, stop human rights violations and apartheid-like policy does not equal to the extinction of Israel. What a terrible, illogical and uneducated comment to make.

I ask again, what is Israel's/your explanation? Because as you said, Israel has another explanation. So my question was - WHY CAN'T YOU SHARE WITH US AND TELL US WHAT YOU MEANT? Good Lord. If you can't answer that, if you can't clarify when asked, then this is a complete waste of time.- 62 replies

Shady? Did you get a chance to read the information Bitsy posted? It was an article from the scientist, Myles Allen, that David Rose misrepresented. I will post some of the information: I also explained that doubling pre-industrial carbon dioxide concentrations, which we are almost certain to do now, was just the beginning. Increasing use of fossil carbon at the current rate would drive atmospheric concentrations towards four times pre-industrial figures by 2100. So even if the "climate sensitivity" is as low as 2C, as some lines of evidence now suggest, we would still be looking at 4C plus by the early 22nd century. The reason is that there is plenty of fossil carbon down there, and we keep finding more: the Japanese have just demonstrated how to mine sub-ocean methane clathrates. And as other carbon pools fill up, an increasing fraction of the carbon we dump in the atmosphere stays there, in effect, forever (unless our grandchildren decide to pump it out again). David accepted all of this – I quote: "Of course, I accept that CO2 emissions have to come down," – while arguing that the current government's emphasis on short-term measures like promoting windfarms is largely irrelevant. -
Obama had an interview with an Israeli station earlier this month, just before he left to visit thecountry. In the interview he stated that he admires Israel’s “core values.” Israeli journalist Gideon Levy, who has been covering the occupied territory for decades, editorially asked Obama, which values he was talking about? The dehumanization of the Palestinians? The attitude toward African migrants? The arrogance, racism and nationalism? Is this what he admires? Don’t separate buses for Palestinians remind him of something? Doesn’t two communities living on the same land, one with full rights and the other with no rights, ring a bell . . . ? Racism, apartheid and ethnic cleansing, are replaced by imaginary “core values” in order to sell something that is obviously wrong and unsustainable. A CIA report has already mentioned that if Israel continues down the same path, it will not last more than 20 years. Israel has a chance to change its path, but I don't see it happening. Not with the self denial, the type of people who run it and those who make excuses for it.

I accept that it may or may not be 'all' the homes in the village. So let's talk about the spraying of all the homes that we see in the video. Are you questioning that those homes were sprayed? What is yours/Israel's explanation?- 62 replies

2 points: #1 - How about you come up with information showing that Israel only sprayed "some" of the homes. #2 - Tell me how it's okay for Israel to spray homes to punish people for protesting the barrier.- 62 replies

Whether it is "all" the houses or not is not a concern to me. You find the oddest points to get worked up about. Points that are insignificant to the issue. The fact that Israel is punishing Palestinians by spraying their homes with a foul substance because they have protested the Israeli wall that cuts into their land is my concern.- 62 replies

Hudson Jones replied to Hudson Jones's topic in The Rest of the World
Of course not. I don't think anyone here condones those actions. Canada and most of the world does not support the Syrian government's actions. Unfortunately, the government of Canada and the U.S.give a pass to Israel's actions. This is why we should speak out against it and tell our governments that they do not speak for us when they fail to condemn any human rights actions and give unconditional support for those who commit them.- 62 replies

The Great Green Con #1 GW Forecasts Wrong Again
Hudson Jones replied to scribblet's topic in The Rest of the World
Scribblet is one of the last few holding onto the notion that there is no climate change and that our activities are not contributing to the environment. She has, for some reason, decided to become the mouthpiece for corporation who want to squeeze as much money as possible from the status quo which is obviously harming our environment. Most of these old and archaic, anti-science thoughts will be drowned out by our children. I just hope we do not reach the tipping point, where earth becomes depleted from over logging, soil contamination, water contamination and the loss of the ozone layer. -
The Great Green Con #1 GW Forecasts Wrong Again
Hudson Jones replied to scribblet's topic in The Rest of the World
I remember the incident around the river in China. There has been no real explanation. Here is more information on the red river: Rivers have turned bright red before in fast-industrializing, pollution-plagued China. A 2008 incident on the Han River, a Yangtze tributary, was blamed on a permanganate spill; the chemical is used in tanning, metal cleaning and bleaching. Last year, an illegal recycling plant dumped red dye from plastic bags and wrappers into the Jian River. The source of the Yangtze’s new hue is not yet established. Algae can create what is known as a “red tide,” but that is a saltwater phenomenon. A deadly earthquake in the upper Yangtze valley did precede the sudden discoloration of the river. Western scientists (and conspiracy theorists) declared themselves skeptical of natural explanations for the lurid colour. Official Chinese news sites reported that local environmental officials in Chongqing found no evidence of dangerous substances in the water. They ascribed the red colour provisionally to higher-than-normal outflows of iron-rich silt from upstream, and promised that results of their follow-up “would be announced to the public in a timely manner.” But offshore, business and local news websites hinted at a cover-up, noting that pollution is an acknowledged problem along the Yangtze, whose basin contains more than a tenth of the human race. The Yangtze River dolphin, or “baiji,” a freshwater cetacean indigenous to the river, was declared “functionally extinct” in 2006. -

In case you missed it, even though it was explained in the original post and shown in the video, the spraying of the houses with this foul stench happened because Israel wanted to punish the Palestinians who had the audacity to protest the Israeli barrier wall that cuts deep into the Palestinian territory. So I'm not sure why you're here trying to apologize for Israel's rotten action. More from the report: It is reported that the Israeli forces also targeted all the houses of the village with the liquid formula. A B'Tselem report pointed out the effects of this 'Skunk' spray included causing environmental damage. B'Tselem has reported that this non-lethal weapon has been added to Israel's armoury for crowd control, even though the video shows clearly that it is also used against Palestinian-owned property. Speaking of 'raw sewage': Ariel settlement dumps sewage on Palestinian town According to the Palestinian Water Authority, the settlement of Ariel has been pumping its sewage directly into the nearby Palestinian village of Bruqin, creating a dangerous and unhealthy situation for the residents of Bruqin.- 62 replies

On March 6th it was reported that “Israeli forces have sprayed Palestinian homes in the village of Nabi Saleh with Skunk as a punishment for organizing weekly protests against the Apartheid Wall built on occupied land. Human rights watchdog B’Tselem published a showing Israel’s armoured tanker trucks fitted with “water canons” [spraying] the foul fluid.” It is reported that the Israeli forces also targeted all the houses of the village with the liquid formula. Man. You type a lot of opinion without backing up any of your claims. You requested something to back up my claim that Palestinians both in the occupied territories and in Israel are discriminated against and I gave you specific examples. You've had a chance to counter the points given but have failed. You need to stop with the excuses. You need to accept and acknowledge that Palestinians are discriminated against by Israel. Not because I say so, but because there is ample evidence which shows that it happens. Let's forget about the discriminatory immigration laws towards the Palestinians in Israel for a moment and focus on the Palestinian territories. The Jewish settlers in the West Bank are given preferential treatment as demonstrated in the video in the first post. They get to drive on Jewish only roads, while Palestinians are trapped in enclaves and have either no access or difficult access to other parts in the West Bank because there are hundreds of checkpoints throughout the West Bank, restricting their movements. They live in an open air prison. Do the illegal Jewish settlers living in the West Bank have to go through the same thing as Palestinians do? No. Is this discrimination? Yes. If you want to find something to challenge, why don't you challenge this report on checkpoints and the lack of freedom of movement: http://www.ochaopt.org/documents/UpdateMay2008.pdf Deal with this reality. Time for another video of Israel's discrimination towards Palestinians. This is Apartheid:

Just how fiscally conservative are these Conservatives?
Hudson Jones replied to Argus's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
The major reasons Canada's economy did not plummet like most other Western countries is due to high oil prices and the banking system's regulations. It has nothing to do with Harper. Harper has done nothing to live up to the hype the conservatives build around their brand. -

I point out a discriminatory law in Israel and you comeback with, "it's complicated". Sorry buddy. It's complicated does not excuse the discriminatory law in Israel that prevents Palestinians citizens of Israel from bringing their spouses from the West Bank to their country. You are an angry man. An angry man who tries really hard to make excuses for a racist state who has racist policies towards both those who it is occupying and its Muslim citizens. Anyone who has knowledge of the the occupied territories knows about the hundreds of checkpoints in the occupied territories. They also know how Israel discriminates against both the West Bank residents and also Palestinians who are citizens of Israel, by restricting their movements in the occupied territories. Here is an example of how the rules are different for Palestinian citizens of Israel when they want to travel to the West Bank: Palestinians with Israeli citizenship, who are among the main customers for Qalqiliya’s traders, have since been allowed to enter the city only by foot; It's quite nice of Israel for allowing these people to enter the city by foot. I recommend you read the whole report to get a sense of the racist regime you try very hard to make excuses for.
