  1. The issue is that China want their people employed, not Canadians. We’re not a big enough market to be dictating terms like that, from what I can see. If we were negotiating from a position of strength, we would make that a condition of access to our market. You can sell your cars here, but they have to be built here. But we will be negotiating from a position of desperation. The best we can hope for is maybe building batteries, or another component here. The benefits will be cheap EVs that are more affordable for the autoworkers who were out of a job but now have to work at the Chinese EV car dealerships for half the pay.
  2. Thats the problem though…. China is probably not interested in building plants using Canadian workers. They want to sell Canada the finished product. I’m sure there is a deal to be made, but it’s not going to look great. It’s going to take some brutal compromises, I think. We’re not going to be negotiating from a position of strength, or even with a nation that would see us as an equal partner hoping for a win-win.
  3. Unfortunately, we haven’t done enough to get Japanese and Korean automakers here either. It will take years to get out of the hole that has been dug for us. The Big 3 should be the last choice of vehicle for Canadians to buy in the next decade. If Canada doesn’t have a stake in their manufacturing, we certainly won’t have an incentive to keep the Chinese from taking over the market with cheaper alternatives.
  4. Without the USA cooperation building cars, we need an auto-pact with China asap. There are going to be massive layoffs in the auto sector fairly rapidly. And the price of cars is going to increase significantly. Unfortunately, China is the alternative.
  5. Is PP going to have to find a job? Does he have any marketable skills? Maybe EI could pay for some retraining, given he has never held a job besides being a politician. The implosion of the Cons will be quite something to watch if they lose this election.
  6. I don’t think this conspiracy theory is going to get much traction. 😂 Plus, wouldn’t this make the conservatives, at least on this forum, like Carney even more? They love Trump!
  7. Mostly, yes. No one has claimed otherwise. But those exceptions mean that biological sex is not binary. I had this conversation with some of the weirdos on this forum and they insisted that, despite the many exceptions, biological sex was still binary. It was bizarre.
  8. Carney’s plan is way, way better than tax breaks for people who can already afford houses. Poilievre’s plan would give rich people and landlords massive tax breaks the more houses they buy. The NDP seems to being in the right direction. So if housing is your issue, the only choice is the NDP.
  9. Best thing for you would be to forgo voting maybe, until someone perfect comes along.
  10. Harper asked Carney to be his finance minister. https://www.cbc.ca/news/politics/mark-carney-stephen-harper-1.7460897 …former prime minister Stephen Harper asked him to join his cabinet as finance minister in 2012.
  11. I’m less confident that Poilievre knows how to govern than Carney. At least Carney understands economics. If you couldn’t save some coin from being in a decade long real estate boom for the inevitable downturn, I’m not going to shed any tears for you.
  12. Has Canada ever had a holy grail of a political leader? Sounds to me like your expectations might be a tad high. If the Cons do pull it off, I don’t think we have much to worry about. I think Poilievre would be scared to death of governing in a way where he is compared to Trump. It would make his government a brief minority, or a single term majority.
  13. I don’t think @Michael Hardner is scared of something so far fetched.
  14. You think the leaders are bad? The parties are bad? Local candidates are bad? Would you vote Conservative if Carney was the leader of the party? Social liberal, PhD economist sounds like right up the alley of centre-conservatives, no?
  15. Trudeau is gone. Harper’s man Carney is in there now.
  16. Why did you switch to bottles? Can’t you defend plastic straws?
  17. Stephen J Harper used to love Carney. Recommended him for the Order of Canada, which he received in 2014. https://www.canada.ca/en/news/archive/2012/11/statement-prime-minister-canada-bank-canada-governor-mark-carney-appointment-bank-england.html In this time of global economic uncertainty, Governor Carney has done an admirable job in fulfilling the Bank of Canada’s mandate and has been a valued partner as the Government has worked to steer Canada away from the worst impacts of the global economic recession. As a result, Canada remains an example to the world with its strong banks, effective regulatory environment and sound economic policy.
  18. Wouldn’t it be better not to use something that pollutes and instead use something that pollutes less?
  19. Cons seem to have closed the gap a tiny bit. A minority Con government might be a very interesting concept. It might be like a job interview for PP, while still being held in check. He couldn’t do anything too unpopular as it would likely cause another election. But the odds are still very good for a Lib majority. The debates didn’t seem to move the polls at all. 338canada.com
  20. Every single poll had the Cons up by 20+ points a few weeks ago. It’s rather funny for people to think they were accurate then, but fake now.
